The worst ABB shows (and possibly the best?) are the ones you don't/didn't get to go to or even get tape of to listen to.
:cool:YOU SAID THAT RIGHT,GREATSCOTT!!
I guess i am being just a LITTLE partial!
Afterall----I AM FROM THE BLUEGRASS & GREEN BUDS STATE ALSO!!:cool:
GOODVIBES & PEACE OF MIND TO ALL!:)
I've said it before and I'll say it again, folks. If you're lookin' to stand and boogie the entire night, puff with impunity, get the best overall view and sound mix (yes, even better than the so-called "gold circle" seats), see the prettiest girls and generally have the most fun in a carnival-like atmosphere (and save some cash for $7 beers in the process), you just can't beat the lawn.
Nothing like a spot on the grass down front in the middle for a summer shed show. I love the theater gigs, and I certainly understand that some have very tangible reasons for not being willing to do the lawn thing, but for this cat, I'll take the grass every time.
😎
i didn't sit down once during the ABB show at verizon this past summer, I have a wildly overt good time, and no one hassled me. we were on the 9th row, center, where everyone was standing and dancing, an area that someone else was telling me was going to be nothing but yuppie swells making people sit down.
i appreciate the humor, but saying stuff like that discourages people from coming out and having a good time. it may have been true where you were sitting, but in the area where we were, nothing could be further from the truth than "they have a seat gestapo that will throw you out if you get out of your seat or have an overtly good time."
Some of the best times I've ever had at an ABB show have been at this facility, and that wouldn't be the case if what you said was true. Not only that, but this is a venue that ENCOURAGES tailgating, and doesn't mind a bit if everyone in your tailgate party is hammered and openly chugging as long as they're 21 and there's no open dope smoking.
On the other hand the parking charges, the water bottles with no cap, the "no lids for soft drinks," the $7 beers, the bad service, all that and more is true. This ain't no well-run, customer-service-oriented Alltel Pavilion we got here.
Good morning y'all. Big changes at the Cafe Charlesinator. We're making some hoity toity changes here. The days of the free lunch soup line are gone. If the ABB can tack on an additional $10.00 for this year's Beacon Run, by golly so can we. We're changing the name to Nate's Grill. (Doesn't that have an upscale ring to it?) We're changing the menu. Gone is one of my personal favorites-"white trash chocolate cake."
In it's place we're going to have stuff like today's special Hickory Farms Beef Summer Sausage. (Somebody gave me a pack for Xmas.) I'm going to run down to the Exxon and pick up some hoop cheese. I'm going to serve what the french call "hour d'oeuvres" and charge an exorbitant amount for it. I'm taking a page out of ol' ticketbasturd's book and start raping my friends. Also changing clientele. If ya sit in the lawn seats, you can order takeout, but we don't want your kind in the joint. We are going to have a gold circle seating (charging extra of course.) Where the "neuveau riche" can show off their "haute coture" to the rest of y'all envious peons. I'm leaving the "decor" the same because as I have now fround it is so trendy. The hoity toity can now feel like they are actually in a real honky tonk and not have to deal with any of the regular unwashed masses that patronize those establishments. I'm going to make a killing............Ha,ha,ha..........................
..........................................................................................................................
Funny, Ol' Great Scott got me to thinking about that 96 Greenville show. (It's a good thing he's fasting maybe he can save up enough to eat at my new joint. Oh wait he's been known to sit on the lawn.) Anyway day of the show
I called a scalper ...ahem...ticketbroker. Excuse me. He told me I could have the tix less than face value if I took his last 4. I called my good friends David, his wife Cheryl, and my Ol' buddy Pete. (Too bad they can't come to the new joint either. Dave likes to get rowdy every now and then. And sometimes Pete has trouble slapping two nickels together to make a dime, but boy we had some good times drinking 40 oz.s out back of the airport. With the exception of Cheryl, these ain't the beautiful people.) Anyway off we went on my first road trip to catch the Brothers someplace else other than Blockbuster Pavillion now Verison Amphitheater (This is the place I'm basing the new restaurant on. Where they charge you 7 bucks for parking now included on your ticket price. Where they have a seat gestapo that will throw you out if you get out of your seat or have an overtly good time. I'm also planning on having guards w/ guns at the exits to extort any leftover money from patrons as they leave after paying $4.00 for a bottle of water.) Where was I... oh yeah we got to Greenville and parked right on the street. No charge can you believe that! Walked right in and our car was there we we got out. Man that was a good show in a real venerable place. It was all wood just reeking of history. They were giving away memorial cups with the names of some of all the acts and sporting events that played there on them. You could tell the building had been there for a long time. The show was good with some of those hair raising moments. I remember in particularly Gregg singing Soulshine the way that only Gregg can with all the pain of love lost, the blues that comes from circumstances beyond our control and the misfortunes that are only ours to blame, but also with that shred of hope that still lingers, that fire that still burns..........................................
We had so much fun on the trip back discussing all the little nuances of the show. Laughing at each other's funny coments. Sometimes till we cried. How much are memories like this worth? And we really didn't spend that much in real dollars at the time. Now that colosseum is gone replaced with another impersonal establishment that is geared to getting as much cash as possible from the public...........................kind a like what I'm going to do here at the grill. Hmmmmmmmmm..................................
What do y'all think? Should I change the grill? Devote the rest of my life to that almighty dollar without regard to anything or anybody else.

"Hey we can buy Little Debbie's for a nickel a piece. Call 'em some french name and charge a dollar for 'em. A dollar heck we can gouge the folks for at least three." - The devil sitting on Charlesinator's shoulder.
Hey now, Great Scott! Seems like another time I've been in your presence and didn't know it. I was at that '96 show as well. ( Remember, we saw each other at Huntsville in '00 and didn't know who we were?) Anyway you're right about a great show. I was playing in a charity golf tournament in Columbia being thrown by Dave Thomas (Wendy's fame) to benefit adoption. As soon as we finished the last hole, I jumped in the car and boogied up I-26 to Greenville and picked up my concert buddy - son Brandon. It was his third ABB show at the ripe old age of 12 at the time. Even he got off on that 35 min Elizabeth Reed. Back to the house after the show then off to Columbia for the second day's tee time at 8:00 am. That show gave me the motivation for one of my better days of golf doing my best Fuzzy Zoeller imitation whistling Elizabeth Reed whilst stomping around the course. I guess the point of the ramble is now two great things gone - Dave Thomas and his philanthropy and Greenville's "Old Brown Box".
We don't know what the shelf life for either band is...neither does Warren.
He has a chance for some great opportunities, and plenty of bananas. The time is "ripe" for him
I feel the same way you do hotlantatim ……mixed. For me, if Warren stays a permanent member of The Allman Brothers Band and keeps Gov't Mule going, I will have no problem with him playing with The Dead here and there. You can't really blame him for wanting to play with as many people as he can because that is what it is all about. Who else has gotten these types of opportunities?
That being said, I will hate it if he leaves this band or if we get less ABB shows as a result of this Dead thing. Honestly, I think the Allmans are at a point where everything is really awesome and the band is moving forward, where as I don't see the Dead evolving at all (just my opinion). Not only was Hittin' The Note one of the best studio discs since Duane was around, but with the Beacon DVD, a new live disc and the Instant Live program, it would seem to me that this would be the wrong time for Warren to pick up another gig (and we haven't even touched on Mule being a full band again and moving forward).
I really wish someone close to Warren and the band would shed some light on what he plans to do. One way or the other, I would like to know what is up.
I guess some of ya'll have read that it looks like Warren is a member of The Dead now. On Dead.net they announce the four GD alumni plus Jimmy, Warren & Jeff playing February 9 in San Fran. They also state that there will be a two leg summer tour (but don't specifically mention the lineup for those legs, although it seems like it would be the same one).
Anyway, I guess I'm happy for Warren but wonder how it will affect the Allmans. I guess he felt like the ABB & Mule, along with periodic Phil & Friends and solo acoustic shows just wasn't enough (how does he do it?)....... I thought 03 was so cool for the Brothers that I'd like to see them repeat such a good year and maybe write some more new tunes.
Maybe we'll be seeing an Allman - Dead summer tour. I'd have mixed feelings cause I don't want to see the ABB open for anyone (except maybe at a large fest).
Thoughts?
Hi Marsha!
As for the never trust lines, how about: Never trust any diving pool under 30 degrees.
or Never trust any surgery under 30 dollars.
or Never trust any airplane with under 30 seats.
Anyway, the grey ABB under 30 T-shirt is one of my favorites. It's like a stealth ABB shirt. Goes with anything, too.
Hey there sweet family,
Marsha, does this mean you might be headed to Jello Shot Boot Camp??? Tres cool, if true!
Y' can't fool us, Tony. You're jonesin' 2 B dat Peach your fashionable self. You could do it, man. Change the BirdBreakfast to BirdBrunch and, "Live from New York it's Saturday Morn'!"
Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana
Good morning, Lana.
You can count me in for the Today Show (Mrs. Corny, here). Jacquie and TerriB, I am seriously considering your offer.
Marsha C.
Hey now DanB!
My Greenville '96 story is a little different. Me and a friend rolled into town from Atlanta that afternoon and arrived about an hour before showtime. Did our tailgating in a church parking lot about two blocks away. Doing shots of Jim Beam and puffin' on some of Mother Nature's Finest about 50 feet from a house of God...had to say an extra couple of rosaries for that stunt!! Didn't get struck by lightning (or popped by Johnny Law), so I guess our luck was holding out.
And you're right, that show was a doozy. Our seats were in the very last row of the upper level, straight back from the stage--as far away from the band as we could have possibly been. Still loved every minute of it. Terrific setlist, including on of the better versions of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" that I've ever heard.
By the by, for those of y'all heading to the Beacon, Lana is right, cabs from LaGuardia to the Beacon are very reasonable. A helpful tip would be to post to the Forum (or the Listserv, if you're there) when your flight arrives and see if you can meet up with someone to share the cost of the ride. Last year I was travelling alone, but hooked up with Helen Banes, Brenda Griffin and another friend of theirs, and we split the cab four ways. And as Lana mentioned, you get the scenic trip into the city, including a drive through Harlem, which I had never seen. Good times.
🙂
OK, put names in a hat and make someone dress as a giant peach. Roll them up to the film area. Heck with the hat, make PhillyBob do it.
peach S. :wave:Hi, Jack! Looks like it's you and me this morning! How do you like your coffee?? Oh wait, that's Bird's line! 😉
Trust (the word of the day) me, there's a Saturday and Sunday Today Show, Weekend Today. We watch it all the time.
A quick "only at the Beacon" travel story: A few years back I was walking down Broadway with members of the fam' (paging John Bowes, was one of them you??). We'd just passed the 72nd St. subway entrance/exit when someone shouted, "Lana???! Lana???!"
I turned around and saw a man waving and smiling ... "Akira??? Akira???!" Yesss! Akira! Akira from Japan, who we'd never met in person before, had flown into JFK for the Beacon shows, taken the shuttle into Manhatten, gotten on the subway, and the first person he saw in NYC when he emerged from the subway station was me. There's something about the Beacon ...
Take care and know that you are loved,
Lana
