Hey now DanB!
My Greenville '96 story is a little different. Me and a friend rolled into town from Atlanta that afternoon and arrived about an hour before showtime. Did our tailgating in a church parking lot about two blocks away. Doing shots of Jim Beam and puffin' on some of Mother Nature's Finest about 50 feet from a house of God...had to say an extra couple of rosaries for that stunt!! Didn't get struck by lightning (or popped by Johnny Law), so I guess our luck was holding out.
And you're right, that show was a doozy. Our seats were in the very last row of the upper level, straight back from the stage--as far away from the band as we could have possibly been. Still loved every minute of it. Terrific setlist, including on of the better versions of "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" that I've ever heard.
By the by, for those of y'all heading to the Beacon, Lana is right, cabs from LaGuardia to the Beacon are very reasonable. A helpful tip would be to post to the Forum (or the Listserv, if you're there) when your flight arrives and see if you can meet up with someone to share the cost of the ride. Last year I was travelling alone, but hooked up with Helen Banes, Brenda Griffin and another friend of theirs, and we split the cab four ways. And as Lana mentioned, you get the scenic trip into the city, including a drive through Harlem, which I had never seen. Good times.
