I was there, too --- I paid a lot for my seat but it was worth it --- thought the overall flow and level of playing was excellent ---- place was energized.

Having the A team come out and rip for only a song or 2 actually added to the color of musicianship on display.

And like another poster mentioned, was very impressed by downtown Macon.

Had an amazing meal @ Dovetail --- there's a spot in Chicago called Virtue that does the southern thing with not one, but 2 James Beard chefs and this place might be better.

That civic auditorium is a gem ---- can't remember the local beer they were selling but it was great

I agree completely with OP.  I enjoyed the show from the couch and was incredibly grateful to get to watch it, but when The A Team is in the house, why on earth would you have Johnny Stachela play so many songs when Derek was there??   If it was a bar band, in a bar, for $20 then OK.  But afterwards all I could think was "i'm so glad I didn't blow thousands of dollars for..... that".  Johnny plays notes, in key, but side by side when Derek came out to play Pony Boy it becomes clear the astronomical difference of those two, it was like 100 times better than anything played up to that point, then they promptly left again!   Long Time Gone was great to hear.  Charlie Starr sounded and played great.  But all those legends and so few songs played by them.   I love Warren, and TTB, but wtf was up with Soulshine and Midnight in Harlem at a one off tribute to DICKEY BETTS?  Soooo many actual Dickey songs could have been played!   It was weird.

Also, why Nobody Knows?  Yes it's a great jam song but didn't I read somewhere that Dickey hated that song because it was "just another Whippin Post"?  They should have played Les Brers instead, the iconic jam of the band getting back up after being knocked down on their asses after Duane was tragically killed.

Individual state of mind plays a huge part in your enjoyment or non-enjoyment of music in the moment, and my state of mind was more "where the hell is Derek and Warren and Oteil and Jaimoe".   Going back to some of the first set and it sounds good.  Duane Betts played his ass off.  Devon Allman should not be allowed to sing when other much more competent singers are in the house.  I wish he would get the cotton balls out of his cheeks or whatever.  His voice is terrible.

Close, Gregg disliked the song because he felt Dickey was trying to write another "Whipping Post" (if I recall, someone at the sessions for Shades suggested they add a Whipping Post-type epic). Gregg also found it challenging to sing (it's a mouthful) so Dickey ended up singing it in the late 1990s-2000s. It was a nice surprise to hear, never one of my favorite tunes, but I also think Devon needed something to sing.

Again, it was a fantastic night of music. I just think if the poster/advertising had said "Duane Betts Presets" or "Duane Betts & Guests" it would have been crystal clear and no one would have a negative word about the show. And I'll go to bat for Johnny Stachela, he's an amazing slide player.

I can't say I disagree. I said to my buddy Devon's singing kind of makes me laugh, it's like he's imitating someone singing. Like when Adam Sandler pretends to be singing like Bruce Springsteen. And I was really confused when the show was almost over and Lamar Jr had yet to take the mic, and he was so good on "Revival".

@porkchopbob Thanks for the correction on Nobody Knows trivia.  We agree on some things and disagree on others.  I wish I was able to go to MSG in April.  Hoping for a webcast of those shows they're going to be on fire.

@joe_the_lurker Had I not been given a heads' up about what to expect I would have been wondering the same thing during the 1st set, so I totally get what you're saying.

Why not, its a great song. One of the best from the 90's era ABB IMHO.

Yeah his voice is kinda jarring at first. But its grown on me over the years, does not bother me to much anymore, but I get what you guys are saying. I always wondered if thats his real singing voice, or like mentioned by PCB, trying to sound someone/thing else.

I liked what I heard and saw from the show. I thought it was fine and enjoyable. Yeah a few clams here and there , but oh well. Did not ruin it for me. I thought the percussion section of all three really drove the music when it needed it to.

Everyone that took the stage that night played their hearts out for Dickey - that’s good enough for me

@jszfunk His influences always seemed to be more early 90s rock and a lot of those guys sang in a forced lower register. I think that's just how he learned to sing, it's less open throated like soul singers. Doesn't always mesh well with ABB-style music.

Also, why Nobody Knows?

They did that one this year on the Allman Betts Family Revival. Looked like Devon finally remembered the words. When I saw them he had a lyric sheet on the floor and looked at it constantly.

Just posted my review/thoughts on the weekend. I think anyone who looked at the poster and expected them on stage all night was a little crazy. That Liz Reed was no joke, one for the ages. I thought the whole second set was great.

I just posted my review in another thread. I think it's a little nuts for people to expect everyone on the poster to be on stage all night. Warren and Derek surely did stand out for a lot of reasons. The second set was fantastic, IMHO.

It was an amazing night of music. And while I wasn't expecting a 4-hour ABB reunion the entire night, I don't think it's that crazy some people might have thought those "featured" would be joining "former ABB members" based on some of the promotional material.

Alongside former Allman Brothers Band members Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell, and Oteil Burbridge, the concert will feature Susan Tedeschi, Duane Betts, Gregg Allman's son Devon Allman, Blackberry Smoke's Charlie Starr, Wet Willie's Jimmy Hall, and Lamar Williams Jr.

Jimmy Hall was top notch on vocals to me. I agree Johnny Stachela is a fine slide player. I've seen him live four times and always impressed. And got to chat with him a bit and he's a nice guy. He thinks Dickey was a very good slide player especially on dobro and acoustic. He also likes Ry Cooder and to him Duane Allman and Derek Trucks are tops.

I recall the friction over Nobody Knows. During the sessions in Memphis for Shades of Two Worlds, Tom Dowd asked Dickey (apparently Gregg was suffering from writers block through the late 80's and 90's) to come up with a Whipping Post style song. Nobody Knows was it. Warren said he wrote some changes for it but didn't get a credit when the album came out.

Gregg Allman thought Dickey was ripping off Whipping Post a bit too much and singing it bothered his throat so Gregg was not a fan of that song and eventually refused to sing it anymore. Butch Trucks stated in an interview that Gregg wanted the song dropped but Dickey said no and announced if Gregg won't sing it he would sing it himself so Nobody Knows remained on the set list.

That created a riff between Gregg and Dickey in the mid 90's which caused some tension in the band and by 1997 tension over that and other things was growing and Warren said he and Allen Woody decided to leave the Allman Brothers Band and concentrate only on Gov't Mule.

Gregg wanted Jack Pearson to replace Warren and after Dickey played with Jack, Dickey went into another room at his house and came back and gave Jack a slide that Duane Allman had used and Jack was hired.

I can't remember who wanted Oteil Burbridge for the new bass player. I think Butch Trucks did but not sure.

And Oteil ended up with the bass guitar chair longer than anyone. 1997 to 2014.

Thx for the clips.  I was at this show, front row.  Great night of ABB music. Out of all the ABB 'tribute' bands, and I've seen quite a few, Friends of the Brothers is tops with  Junior Mack and Andy Aledort.  And it's always special to see Jaimoe sit in with them.

Thanks. I really don't think anyone else is doing it quite like us. IN addition to Andy and Junior's obvious brilliance, our rhythm section really pumps. Obviously, playing with Jaimoe is a thrill and an honor. This Satirday at City Winery Philadelphia!

@porkchopbob Yeah. I guess I just knew, but also I have been to a lot of tribute concerts and the rotating cast is pretty typical. It would be a lot of work for one group to learn all the material. Honestly, also have to remember that everyone basically donated their time.

Not sure who inside the band was pushing for him, but pretty sure Colonel Bruce was Oteil's biggest champion externally in that effort

@islalala Yes Colonel Bruce was a big believer in Oteil. I think Butch got Oteil in the band. I remember when Butch said on his blog and in an interview that Oteil was technically the best musician ever in the Allman Brothers.

Personally I like the sound and swing I hear when Berry Oakley plays bass the best. Oakley was a huge part of that unique ABB sound.

But I've been a big fan since 1970 and I'm bias toward the original lineup.

Butch said the last lineup was technically the best lineup they ever had but the original lineup was much more creative and took more chances and had no fear of a train wreck. Said Derek and Warren after playing with them for a number of years became too predictable and too afraid they may make a mistake. Said after several tours he knew what Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes were going to play before they played it. Butch wanted someone to throw a curve ball here and there.

Well I guess if you are in the band and playing every show year after year perhaps those things rub off on you.

But Gregg always pretty much played the same solos over and over and Butch and Jaimoe were rather predictable for a regular fan.

If something sounds real good, I like hearing it over and over. Like the usual slide guitar parts on Statesboro Blues. They could play it exactly like At Fillmore East everytime to me.

The Grateful Dead got out on a limb all the time and I was at a few shows where they sawed that limb off and boom a train wreck. I like it better when a band keeps it on the tracks and plays at a high level of musicianship.

I was at the show and as soon as I got home I opened my "JDownloader" and pasted the youtube link in there from nugs and downloaded it in 1080p and the highest audio quality bitrate. Thank god because they took it down like 18 hours later). It's a 4.1GB file or i'd upload it somewhere. I've been putting them on flash drives for people to plug into their TV to watch. I mean I guess I could mail you one. It's on YouTube in high quality (for now). I just checked. Someone made a post about it and it's the pro-shot Nugs stream (same I have downloaded).
