The speeches and tributes to Dickey were amazing and beautiful, and the energy was great going in.
However it was perhaps the most awkward show I’ve ever been to. To be candid, a lot of people were quite disappointed, if not very pissed off. From someone yelling “false advertising” nonstop down in the concession area, the couple behind us said they didn’t come this far and pay World Series prices to see Triple A players. People all around us were talking about it.

I got it, the bill said the names it did but we mostly saw the Allman Betts Revue that we just saw in Nashville. Derek and Warren played a couple songs. Susan sang a couple songs. Oteil was on and off with a notable difference when he was.
Duane played great. Liz Reed was a whole different level when the A-team got out there, besides a big flub during organ solo, which kind of characterized the whole evening. A lot of flubs and misfires.
Got to see Dickey and Allmans tunes, which is almost always a treat, but not sure what to think about this whole thing.
Looking forward to being back at MSG. Warren and Derek seem like someone lit a fire under them.

I don't understand. Who were these people in the audience expecting to see/hear?

And A team vs triple A players?

The people I saw perform were advertised on the big poster seen here on this site. Were the disappointed people not expecting to see people on the poster or did some of them in their opinion not play/sing as well as expected?

Duane Betts of course was center stage as it was his father they were saluting.

But I saw Jimmy Hall, Chuck Leavell, Charlie Starr, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Devon Allman, Warren Haynes etc and all were advertised on the poster.

It had its highs and lows but I wasn't expecting it to sound like the Allman Brothers Band on At Fillmore East or Eat A Peach.

Maybe it was an uneven show because the musicians were being rotated.

Yea, I get it. My favorite besides Liz Reed was probably Chuck singing Rain or the Great Southern songs at beginning.
The top names on the bill did not play most of the show, which is kind of odd. We just met some guys at cemetery (lots of people there today, so cool!) from Richmond that said it best, it should have simply been billed differently, and that Warren, Derek, and Oteil were only all out there together once. One of the best bass players in the world was on the bill but only out there half the time for someone else a lot of ppl (not all of us) didn’t even know.
We enjoyed it. My wife turned to me during Liz Reed and says “ok, I want to go to NYC shows now” haha. Think that song showed the difference, the place elevated.

They should have know if you were a real Dickey fan. The "other" bass player

 Was Pedro Arevalo, played with Dickey 10+ years. And is now part of Duane Betts, Palmetto Motel band.

Oh by the way, the two keyboard players nobody knew were Mike Kach who was in Gregg's band and John Ginty who is in both Palmetto Motel and the Devon & Duane thing.

Yes, not a lot of folks knew that. Definitely not the Dead fan that behind us that apparently just left the Sphere 😂 Was good to see everyone. Just seems like a lot of patrons were confused.

Lotta big spenders, without a clue about who else played with Dickey throughout the years. Let's not forget  Warren got his start with Dickey's band and then asked to ABB.

I stand corrected.  Mike Kach played with Dickey. Not Gregg, it's Peter Levin who played keys in Gregg's band

I really don't know what you guys are complaining about. I'm watching the livestream and would have loved to have been there. Did you expect the second coming?

Seriously, it was a great show with great guests and some great playing. Song choices were terrific and Duane Betts handled the spotlight great.

Again, I would have loved to have been there. I'll bet the Macon area had an ABB buzz about it.

@mulemewarren Warren said since Dickey's passing that he owes his career to Dickey. Dickey asked Warren to join him for a country album which was never released then called about the Pattern Disruptive album and tours. Epic had signed both Dickey and Gregg and were pushing for an Allman Brothers Band album so Dickey asked Warren to be in the Allman Brothers Band.

Warren said that opened many doors for him and Dickey always had Warren with him at interviews and made sure the people interviewing the band knew who Warren was and that Warren was half of the guitar playing in the band.

Dickey had mentioned years before that Duane Allman always made sure people knew Dickey was playing half the guitar solos in the band. That it wasn't just Duane Allman.

In one interview Warren also said he would have left the Allman Brothers post 2001 if he were standing in the way of Dickey coming back. But he would occasionally talk with Dickey in the 2000's and unfortunately Dickey didn't want to come back and Butch Trucks was opposed too even after Gregg seemed to warm some to it.

And Warren and Derek over Butch's objection tried to get Dickey for the 2009 shows at the Beacon where they tried to get players who had worked with Duane Allman. As you know even Eric Clapton showed up. But Dickey didn't come unfortunately.

Eric Clapton showing up I thought back then was huge and heartwarming. Clapton did it for Duane Allman. Eric Clapton was a much bigger star and celebrity than anyone in the Allman Brothers including Gregg Allman and worth more money than everyone in the Allman Brothers Band combined and then some.

I to thought the show was great.  It was a Dickey tribute, not a latter day ABB reunion.  That's coming in April at MSG. When people saw Warren, Derek, Oteil and Chuck on the bill they 'assumed' it was gonna be them all night. Well as I said before they are not true Dickey fans.

And yes Duane a fine job as host, I bet his farther was smiling down.✌️

Haven't had time to watch the whole show yet.  Concerned over Jaimoe's absence.  Hope all is well with him.

Yeah, this show (as I understood it) was to be a tribute to Dickey - much like those Don Was shows at Atlanta's Fox Theater for Gregg and Skynnyrd.  Can't understand why anybody would've expected anything different (or better!) than what they got.

I too am concerned about Jaimoe.  Have seen him a few times now with Friends of the Brothers and going to the show April 19th at Bergen PAC (NJ).  He's on the bill.  He has seemed in good spirits and healthy, even got an autograph.

Read Jaimoe was a no show in Macon as the 80 year old musician didn't feel up to flying down to Macon. Jaimoe is the last man standing among the 6 who were the Allman Brothers Band.

I'm 78 and don't enjoy traveling much now either and in younger years I loved to travel. Especially going to New York City. The Filmore and Beacon and Madison Square Garden. I attended the World's Fair in 1964. Took a Circle Line boat ride around Manhattan and saw the big SS United States docked about 42nd Street on the Hudson. It is being towed right now to Mobile, Alabama to be sunk later in the Gulf of Mexico/America to become the world's largest artificial reef and dive spot.

The 990 foot long ocean liner ( slightly larger than the Titanic) is still the fastest in history crossing the Atlantic at 43 MPH and slightly more than 3 days.

It sat docked in Philadelphia for 30 years and is rusty now. When I saw it in Manhattan, it was freshly painted and looked so majestic.

Thx for the clips.  I was at this show, front row.  Great night of ABB music. Out of all the ABB 'tribute' bands, and I've seen quite a few, Friends of the Brothers is tops with  Junior Mack and Andy Aledort.  And it's always special to see Jaimoe sit in with them.

@mulemewarren Yes Friends of the Brothers is tops. Especially when Jaimoe sits in.

I was around in 1973 for the Winterland show in San Francisco and Jaimoe was especially outstanding on drums that night.

Some good headphones are required and Jaimoe is on the left ( same side as Gregg and opposite side of Chuck Leavell if you have your phones reversed ) and Jaimoe is really laying it down on Southbound. Hot playing on the drums.

I was in the 2nd row and thought the show was fantastic.  Would I have loved for Warren, Derek and Oteil play more, yep,  but I figured about 3-4 songs into the show they were saving the big guns for the 2nd set.  First set was still great, was happy to see they had Frankie, Mike and Pedro play a lot as they played with Dickey a lot more than anyone else that was listed on the bill.  Derek played a bunch in the 2nd set (including a great Midnight In Harlem no one saw coming) and Warren was awesome on BWIAB and Soulshine.  Duane played and sang fantastic all night.  He had huge shoes to fill playing his dad's solos and he crushed it.  He has really come into his own as a player and singer.  You know Dickey was absolutely smiling down on him with great pride.  The Liz Reed was completely EPIC and was one of the best I've ever seen live.  My buddy and I  saw over 50 ABB shows between 1994 and 2014, including over 40 together and had no issues with what we got for the money we spent flying down there and for VIP tickets.  Yep, there was a flub here and there and that's what you get with only one day to rehearse.  But on a whole, it was excellent and I will rewatch it many times.  I was at the Brothers in 2020 and will watch both shows that will surely be streamed but was glad I went to a one off tribute show in the city that truly launched the band.  Reading the professional write-ups I'd say those thinking it was bait and switch or didn't enjoy it were in a very small minority.

@rationalrebel

I was at the show too, just got back. I am really glad my buddy and I chatted with someone in the know who gave us a heads up on what type of show to expect. He said don't expect an ABB reunion like The Brothers, even though Derek, Warren, Oteil, Chuck, and Susan are top-billed on the poster. This is Duane Betts' tribute show to his dad, so basically Duane & Friends. Word is even some of the players were confused as well and might be why they decided to do another set of Brothers shows.

Going in knowing what I was told about the show I was able to enjoy it for what it was, and it was a great night of music, overall. The first set was fine, always nice to hear Chuck on "Jessica". "Nobody Knows" was kind of a surprise, and those are the types of deep cuts we were all expecting.

I didn't think things got really rolling until Susan, Derek, and Chuck played "Pony Boy" to kick off the 2nd set. Hearing Warren play his iconic "Back Where It All Begins" solo was pretty special - when is the last time he's played that song? Seeing the old guard on stage for an epic "Liz Reed" was phenomenal.

We definitely looked at each for the three out of place tunes. I get Dickey's "Melissa" solo is pretty special, but that definitely felt like Devon hi-jacking the show for his dad. But you could rationalize it. Warren is contractually obligated to sing "Soulshine" at every show he plays, and even though Dickey played it, its inclusion felt a little pandering to get the crowd in a sing-along mood. And as much as I love "Midnight in Harlem" it felt really out of place. You drop those songs and you have time for a "Bougainvillea" or "Just Another Love Song".

So it was a mixed bag, but still a great night of music. I totally understand peoples' expectations being a celebration of Dickey Betts music performed by former Allman Bros members - that's what I expected when I bought tickets. I wasn't expecting Vince Gill to sing "Louisiana Lou", but "Pony Boy", "Long Time Gone", "Rain" by the top of the poster bill was what was advertised.

Still a great night to be in Macon, felt like a family reunion. Was really glad I was there for it, and now I'm thinking of getting tickets for The Brothers...

@porkchopbob

Funny related story, this guy couple rows behind us front middle, starting about 3 songs in, would calmly say out loud “Bougainvillea” between every song until the end of 2nd set haha. Kept thinking I hope this poor boy didn’t travel all the way from Toronto to hear that song and see Johnny (a great player) play slide most the night instead of Derek. Can’t make ‘em all happy. Loved Duane’s comments about playing what his father would have wanted.

Random observation: amazing how far people traveled from to Macon. 1842 had ppl from all over the country, and quite a few nationalities were at Big House. Really cool stuff.
And ran in to Al at Kirk’s, said Jaimoe was fine and didn’t want to travel, not sure why it wasn’t communicated.

@rationalrebel

The drunk guy next to me LOVED "Soushine". Sang along with it the entire tune. He wasn't singing "Soulshine", but he still sang along with it.

I had read that about Jaimoe, you'd have thought that would have been announced since he's prominently listed on the bill. I get it, traveling from CT to Macon isn't very direct, especially if he's only going to sit in for a few tunes.

Macon has really woken up over the last 10 years. I've been a few times, and whenever I told people I was going to Macon I'd get the same confused look and "Why are you going to Macon?" I first visited in 2014 (also stayed at 1842 Inn - great place) and the downtown was pretty quiet. Now it's full of restaurants and bars and re-opened theaters and so much of it has to do with The Big House and Capricorn and giving people a reason to go to Macon.

I get the Melissa as Gregg said that was his favorite Dickey solo and can see why Duane included it.  Would have preferred a Les Brers vs. Soulshine  and Midnight in Harlem but again all in all, excellent night of music, especially the 2nd set.

@frankcolonna

"Les Brers" would been great. I was secretly hoping to hear Chuck play on "High Falls", but that would be a stretch. Once they opened with "Hot Lanta" I knew it was unlikely there would be more than 3 instrumentals, with "Liz Reed" and "Jessica" definitely in the set list.

@porkchopbob Glad you were there. As Frank said up above in Gregg's book Gregg does praise Dickey's guitar playing on Melissa as some of the best there is but I too question it's inclusion on a Dickey tribute. Midnight in Harlem too.

Maybe Warren should have sung "Mean Woman Blues" instead of "Soulshine".

I remember Butchie in the 2000's complained about Dickey being a bully and putting Mean Woman Blues on the Where It All Begins album and Rocking Horse was scratched by Dickey which made Butch angry back in 1994.

I hate to say it and many may not agree but I like Mean Woman Blues better than Rocking Horse:)

We were there, no complaints, an emotional night of music, I heard no complaints from anyone, during the show or afterwards downtown roaming around. Even at the hotel the next morning at breakfast, everyone was just raving about the night of music. And on one plays Dickey's songs better than Great Southern, loved seeing Mike, Frankie, Mark and Pedro up on stage. I thought it worked well with the guest spots of the "big guns" scattered through the night, made it more special. Highlights for me was Chuck playing his solo on Jessica and everyone else on stage basically just stood in awe of him out of the way, Warren, Derek, Oteil and Chuck tearing up Liz Reed, and they were having so much fun together up there, you could tell they enjoy playing with each other. And Ramblin' Man was awesome, especially Warren and Derek smiling and digging Duane's solo, so much fun. Maybe one complaint, $15 for a can of Ultra! Smile
