Just got back from seeing Dickey in Bardstown tonight. Judging from the shows I've heard tapes of, tonight may be the best show this year. I've haven't heard Dickey play this good since the Summer of True Gravity. Unfortunately there were no tapers there tonight. And a very small crowd. Beautiful weather and a great show. What a shame.
Met GreatScott & his bride, RockeyMtnJam, CB, & TattooNeil.
From what I can remember the setlist was
Donna Maria
Stateboro
Franklins Tower>Blue Sky
Back Where It All Begins
Nobody Knows
Liz Reed
Come in my Kitchen
Nobody Left to Run With
Jessica with Mtn Jam tease
Encore
Ramblin Man
I know I'm forgetting some song or two.
One of the highlights was some chick running across the stage in her thong during the drum solo in Liz Reed.
They played about 2 hours one set & encore.
Well, if that's the real Bobby Whitlock (and I'm guessing that it is)... Welcome! I'm just sorry the reason you came here was to defend yourself. Please feel free to relate any Duane/Tom Dowd/Layla sessions stories you might want to share.
Hey there sweet family,
Before you ask, yes, that is Bobby responding.
Take care and know that you, and he and Kim, are loved,
Lana
IN response to Dave from N.J.
I never claimed to have taught George Harrison how to play slide , nor do I speak of Eric like you say Levon speaks of Robertson.
Infact,I do not know where you obtain your information from . But it is most certainly not from me.
Bobby Whitlock .
And then......Eric Clapton joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and recorded an album with them.... The front cover of which had a picture of young Clapton sitting on the ground eating a can of beans whilst next to him a dog pees on a sign saying Clapton is God....Beans and Dog piss that's what Clapton thought of that nonsense....When I was young I may have thought that Clapton was God...but now that I am older I realize that he may not be God but he is surely one of his favorite Sons
Nice to see such a passionate post!
Most are...
Welcome to a passionate family of ABB fans...
Your best bet to hear Duane's Tune would be to go to a Dicky Betts show. I remember when that came out on Pattern Disruptive - played the whole CD over and over!

Byard,
I saw the next tour he did in 81-82 with one of my old flames. Albert Lee was the back up guitarist. He, Clapton and I knew he could've blown Eric off the stage at anytime. Saw the show from the 6 th row. It was pretty good, but believe me the next morning was outta sight. Tell your brother to PM me. Peace.

Charlesinator,
I can't speak for my brother Goliath, but I would have to speak a word or two re: Slowhand and Skydog. Someone once asked Jaco Pastorius what was his favorite song he had written, to which he replied "I've got four kids and none of them is my favorite." Of the blues rock guitar heroes Duane and Eric stand arm and arm at the top, no one else is even on the mountainside. So will I pick a favorite-nah! I had the great pleasure of seeing Eric on theSlowhand tour in '78 at the Macon Coliseum. As he played through most of his pop garbage of the 70's I was almost bored. Then he broke into "Let it Rain". At the time I was sitting with my arm around my dates shoulder, and, poor girl, I about knocked her head off moving my arm back to clap, whistle and raise a general pandemonium. And Carl Radle was there to play that most ass-kicking bass line in history! Did I mention "Let It Rain" is one of my favorite songs in the world?!!! Back to the subject at hand-I love 'em both!

CLAPTON IS DOG
I mean.....
CLAPTON IS GOD
Only old fogies know the legend of some Baba Ram Yoda or somebody who in the mid sixties was deep in the underbelly of London, in some foggy alley, when there appeared like a vision in front of him, scrawled in chalk on an ancient brick wall.... "Clapton is God", and so it was set in stone, and created the psychodrama that has so crippled Eric's well being, I mean, God?
Hi Guys: Just one more thought from me since I guess I am the one that started this Clapton vs Duane debate. Although I really didn't mean to start anything. I ,too, lost interest in Clapton's work for many ,many years, and I go back to 1965 as one of his biggest fans. I bought almost every recording that he had ever made until 1985 and loved most of it, but then he did seem to lose what I had loved about him. The only albums I bought between 1985 and 2004 were Journeyman and From the Cradle and I was disappointed by both. I saw him in concert several times between 1975 and 1985 but I lost interest in his live performances as well. BUT THEN....I heard If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day on the Radio and I thought it sounded pretty good so...I went out and bought his new album Me and Mr. Johnson and was VERY pleased at what I heard...In my humble opinion it is one of the finest works of his very long and distinguished career. I had no idea that I would see him play this year and when I found out that I had a chance to see him I honestly didn't know if I wanted to see him or not, but I did go and I am extrememly HAPPY that I did. So...In fact I do agree with alot of what has been said here about Mr. Clapton but like our good friends The ABB who themselves went through some pretty dismal years and put out some pretty bad recordings..... maybe HE too has made a comeback.
Don't take my word for it. Go out and buy his new album and listen with an open mind or catch him in concert and make up your own minds. I also believe that Duane Allman too should have received credit for writing the song Layla, but life ain't always fair. Not in the recording industry.
Just my .02 cents on the Eric Clapton/Duane Allman thread. Both men certainly could play the blues well. The primary difference between them and indeed, most British and American musicians who play the blues is that British musicians had to learn about the blues via records from the United States and consequently, they seem to take a more scholarly approach to their playing of the blues. Certainly, Clapton seems to have taken this approach. American musicians on the other hand, seem to take more of first-hand approach in learning about the blues. Certainly, Duane Allman learned about the blues more from hanging and playing with black musicians, playing in little dives, and also in that being a long-haired musician in the deep South in the mid/late sixties, experiencing people being quite prejudice against him, just because he looked different, than in just listening to a bunch of records. Duane Allman learned the blues by living the life. Again just my .02 cents.
Pretty much my take too, Libby. Duane, EC, SRV, Hendrix, BB King, all different, all excellent, all different. Who you prefer is none of my business. It has always bothered me that Duane never got the respect due.
Like Rolling Stone said, he was one of the greatest of all time without the ABB because of his contribution to the success of so many artists thru his studio work.
Swapped PM's with Goliath yesterday, he's around. And Charlesinator, you have any opinion you want, Bro. You don't have to agree with me to be my friend.
There really are no right or wrong answers, but I've always been amused by the debates over EC and Duane. 🙂 I think both men were in awe of each other and definitely had alot of respect for each other's gift.
I've been touched by both, even today Duane Allman can still take me to the mountain. I listened to FE in it's entirety yesterday. To this day I can't describe the feelings I get when I listen to it. I'm the same way regarding the Layla album.
Music is a universal language, it knows no boundaries. If it touches you, comforts you, heals you, makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you think or moves you to the point that you feel you are going to soar through the clouds with angels, then embrace it and let it take you there.
Eric Clapton and Duane Allman are at the top of my list of influential musicians. They were involved with 2 of my most favorite albums of all time. Eric and Duane on Layla and Assorted Love Songs and "you know who" on Live At The Fillmore East.

We have been receiving many, many calls each day in the HTN office about when the 2003 Instant Lives will be shipped. SOOOO I wanted to let ya'll know that we are hoping to get these CDs from the factory the last week of June.
We will be working 24/7 to ship them to you so that you can listen to them while grilling out on the 4th of July! Worst case - they will go out the first week of July...but we hope not...it all depends on the factory.
The ABB did a couple of good things for the fans that caused a slight delay. First - they got the setlist printed on the back of each CD cover. Second - they reconfigured Mtn. Jam. from Charlotte so that it is in its entire glory on the third CD along with the encore, Layla! The original pressing had Mtn. Jam interrupted during the drum solo on the second CD and it continued on the third CD.
Thanks for all your orders - we hope it was worth the wait! Won't be long now...

Good day y'all. You know who we should have weighing in on this Clapton deal? My dear friend, Goliath. Anybody seen him? Please have him check in on the ol' ABB website. Since we don't have our reasonable and erudite brother to help us out in this situation ...... I guess his arrogant, obnoxious, know-it-all tarheel buddy must take up the slack.
I hope I don't piss off my Jam For Duane contingent of Rick T, Skyponydogboy and the illustrious Buppalo. Y'all guys know I love and respect y'all as people and musicians, but I beg to differ (a little) with your opinion of Eric Clapton. I personally think that Eric Clapton is one of the most important figures in rock music period. To be honest if you compare the guitar abilities of Eric and Duane, you would have to put them pretty much as equal. I've always found that comparing guitarists of that caliber is kind of like comparing apples and oranges. It is interesting to note that while Duane used his abilities to bring out the best in others, Eric has used the talents of others to bring out the best in himself.
Eric Clapton is an artist and a musical genius of the first order who can be compared in the same breath as say Ray Charles, Lennon & McCartney and Hendrix. As much as I love Duane, he just isn't in the same league. Eric Clapton is not just a singer, songwriter, guitarist, etc. He is one of the best in every in every catagory of all of rock-n-roll. And I don't care what Gregg says there is nobody who has done more for blues music than Eric. Not Robert Johnson, not B.B. King and certainly not the ABB.
Not only can Clapton claim to being one of the original proponents of the British Invasion. He had a hand in originating hard rock and heavy metal. He helped to popularize entire styles of music by simply recording tunes in the vein of i.e. Raggae-I Shot the Sheriff,Country & Country Rock-any number of cuts throughout his carreer and he has single handedly kept blues music at the forefront of popular music-(most recently) From The Cradle and Riding With The King. To be honest there is nobody who compares to Clapton in contribution to rock music.
Clapton today can charge $100.00 per tix for a show, sell it out and nobody bats an eye. All the artists that Eric has colaborated with have generally never achived the same amount of success either financially or artistically that they had from working with Clapton. Of course there are notable exceptions. While Derek & the Dominos Layla is the high water mark for Duane, Clapton has had many other important albums-Cream, Blind Faith, 461 Ocean Blvd., Slowhand, EC was Here, EC and Friends. For nearly 5 decades Clapton has been the man. I won't pay $100.00 for a tix. Pilgrim was a horrible CD. And sometimes Clapton way, way crosses that line of prenteniousness. Eric Clapton still deserves the respect of all guitar driven rock-n-roll fans the world over.

"always feel better when i hear guitar" ...bigdave
Clapton rocks, Duane rocked! Love em both! :guitarist:
Eric Clapton played great last night, really kicking it in on a few songs which really burned the place down. I guess I'm old hat, but I would've liked less Robert Johnson and more classic Clapton.
Setlist as I recall:
Let It Rain
Walk out in The rain
I shot the sheriff
Badge
Hoochie Coochie Man
They're Red Hot
Milkcow's Blues
If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day
Have You Ever Loved a Woman
Wonderful Tonight
Layla
Cocaine
Sunshine of your love
Sweet home Chigaco ( with Jimmie Vaughn)
I know I've missed a few tunes there...
EC moved around on stage a lot more than I've ever seen him do before. Usually he just plays with his feet keeping time. Couldn't help feel how great it would've been to see Duane playing "Layla" on that stage. Wrapped up a great evening of music watching Delta Moon perform over at Blind Willie's.
Hey there sweet family,
Happy Saturday!
