Just my .02 cents on the Eric Clapton/Duane Allman thread. Both men certainly could play the blues well. The primary difference between them and indeed, most British and American musicians who play the blues is that British musicians had to learn about the blues via records from the United States and consequently, they seem to take a more scholarly approach to their playing of the blues. Certainly, Clapton seems to have taken this approach. American musicians on the other hand, seem to take more of first-hand approach in learning about the blues. Certainly, Duane Allman learned about the blues more from hanging and playing with black musicians, playing in little dives, and also in that being a long-haired musician in the deep South in the mid/late sixties, experiencing people being quite prejudice against him, just because he looked different, than in just listening to a bunch of records. Duane Allman learned the blues by living the life. Again just my .02 cents.
