Good day y'all. You know who we should have weighing in on this Clapton deal? My dear friend, Goliath. Anybody seen him? Please have him check in on the ol' ABB website. Since we don't have our reasonable and erudite brother to help us out in this situation ...... I guess his arrogant, obnoxious, know-it-all tarheel buddy must take up the slack.
I hope I don't piss off my Jam For Duane contingent of Rick T, Skyponydogboy and the illustrious Buppalo. Y'all guys know I love and respect y'all as people and musicians, but I beg to differ (a little) with your opinion of Eric Clapton. I personally think that Eric Clapton is one of the most important figures in rock music period. To be honest if you compare the guitar abilities of Eric and Duane, you would have to put them pretty much as equal. I've always found that comparing guitarists of that caliber is kind of like comparing apples and oranges. It is interesting to note that while Duane used his abilities to bring out the best in others, Eric has used the talents of others to bring out the best in himself.
Eric Clapton is an artist and a musical genius of the first order who can be compared in the same breath as say Ray Charles, Lennon & McCartney and Hendrix. As much as I love Duane, he just isn't in the same league. Eric Clapton is not just a singer, songwriter, guitarist, etc. He is one of the best in every in every catagory of all of rock-n-roll. And I don't care what Gregg says there is nobody who has done more for blues music than Eric. Not Robert Johnson, not B.B. King and certainly not the ABB.
Not only can Clapton claim to being one of the original proponents of the British Invasion. He had a hand in originating hard rock and heavy metal. He helped to popularize entire styles of music by simply recording tunes in the vein of i.e. Raggae-I Shot the Sheriff,Country & Country Rock-any number of cuts throughout his carreer and he has single handedly kept blues music at the forefront of popular music-(most recently) From The Cradle and Riding With The King. To be honest there is nobody who compares to Clapton in contribution to rock music.
Clapton today can charge $100.00 per tix for a show, sell it out and nobody bats an eye. All the artists that Eric has colaborated with have generally never achived the same amount of success either financially or artistically that they had from working with Clapton. Of course there are notable exceptions. While Derek & the Dominos Layla is the high water mark for Duane, Clapton has had many other important albums-Cream, Blind Faith, 461 Ocean Blvd., Slowhand, EC was Here, EC and Friends. For nearly 5 decades Clapton has been the man. I won't pay $100.00 for a tix. Pilgrim was a horrible CD. And sometimes Clapton way, way crosses that line of prenteniousness. Eric Clapton still deserves the respect of all guitar driven rock-n-roll fans the world over.
