My wife watches Jeopardy every night.  I sometimes do.  Did anyone see the NFL category the other night?  They showed a player and the contestants had to guess who the player was.  The only one nobody got was Terry Bradshaw, they had some early 70s photo of him.  We both immediately laughed because of course everyone would know who that was, nope.  I thought Fox might make fun of that today but I haven't had it on yet.  Jeopardy contestants got all the other ones, players like Joe Montana, Emmitt Smith, Aaron Rodgers, but nope, not Terry Bradshaw.

Fun game until it wasn't, glad I didn't have any skin in the game. Bummer KC wins thanks to a needless penalty for the 2nd straight game, sucked some of the air out of a solid game. It would have been fun to see the Eagles get the ball back with more time on the clock, but he did grab the jersey, ref has to make the call.

Also, always fun (and oh so predictable) seeing old white men lose their minds over the SB halftime show. I thought it was great.

Brilliant clock management at the end by the Chiefs. For years I've been watching teams take the easy TD with 1:30 left instead of waiting to kick a game-winning field goal with only 8 seconds left, which is exactly what the Chiefs did. Obviously they were well-coached to deal with that situation.

@robslob which is funny because the knock against Andy Reid was his clock management. Heads up play at the end end going down at the one, since it's so against every instinct I imagine.

Forget the penalty, the real issue was the NFL had at least 2 weeks to prep the field for its biggest game and it looked like a skating rink at times.

I understood the strategy - just not sure that I or any coach I've ever been involved with would've taken that route.  Easy TD - gift-wrapped with a bow and ribbon right there!  I've never been a fan of "clock-freezing".  This could have back-fired.  A miscue from center or the kicker blowing the FG.  It didn't, so it panned out.  It didn't reflect any confidence  onto their defense.  As we all know by know - defense just isn't (currently) being played at any level of football these days.

@rusty

I've seen it a few times. It became a minimal gamble with potential greater gain thanks to the penalty. How many times have coaches been roasted for leaving too much time for QBs like Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc, who come back to win or tie with :40s left?

NFL rules favor WRs to such a degree that if you your offense can close out the game, you're a fool not to play the clock and take the pressure off of your defense. I think Reid would have gotten roasted more had he given the ball back to Philly and they scored, than had KC failed to score.

I agree with both of you guys about the game. That WAS a penalty. The defensive back DID grab his jersey and he went on TV and said he did. I've heard some of the "experts" say it basically was the reason for the outcome which I think is BS. If the officials didn't call the penalty couldn't that have affected the outcome the other way?

And the clock management is a great point. Rob you are correct, players get so excited to score a TD that they lose sight of the bigger picture.

I do disagree about the half time show though. I laughed when I saw those guys in those white outfits. It looked like they should have been en route to a haz mat accident.

Not sure about the old white men comment. My good friend who is 86! sent a text to me this morning and he thought the halftime stunk. And he is black. But I guess I understand your point.

Ha, well I'm not saying it's only old white men complaining, but every year people are in a race to declare it's the "worst halftime show ever", and if it's hip hop it's predominantly old white men. It's a 10-minute concert, everyone forgets it completely within a week (unless a boob pops out, but does anyone remember anything else about that one?)

@porkchopbob I've enjoyed most of the half-time shows.  Artis like Rhiana, Beyonce, - many (most?) of the other recents are just pretty far removed from my taste - which is certainly generational.  Do Beyonce and Rhiana fans really want to sit around with an old man listening to their music?  I'd think - almost hope not!

Ever since the Red Hot Chili Peppers took it upon themselves to expose that they were lip-syncing to the music (which I thought was hilarious!) - I've always been a little suspicious of the performances.  Did McCartney, Springsteen, Prince, the 'Stones and Tom Petty fake their performances?  I didn't think so at the time - I hope that they didn't.  FYI - pretty much ANYTIME there is a performance of this nature - the artists are generally singing over a pre-recorded track.  Sure - they're actually singing, but they're usually singing over a pre-recorded track as a failsafe to technical glitches and malfunction.  I'm pretty sure that I detected Chris a tad out of sync during his National Anthem performance.  He WAS singing - just over the safety track.  This happens with Presidential inaugurational performances, too.  YoYo Ma acknowledged that the extreme cold would've caused his cello to go out of tune quickly.

As a pretty serious music fan, I find the excessive ... pageantry (dropping from the sky on giant platforms, etc.) to just be beyond music.  Much more akin to a spectacle of some sort than a music performance.  At the same time - I realize that a lot of folks who are not old farts take some fun and entertainment from them.  I'm glad that they delight in these performances.  Like you said - there's always the puppy bowl!

Agree, the backing track never bothered me for these types of performances where you don't get a 2nd chance. Live music is preferable, but they're also on the clock and can't worry about a dead mic or loose cable. I can appreciate the spectacle, which makes sense for a performance in such a huge space compared to an intimate jazz club. For a lot of artists the dancing is just as important to the performance as the music, whether its Lady Gaga or Carmen Miranda.

Don't look now but I think Aaron Rodgers has gotten out of hibernation. I wonder if he now knows what he wants to do to the Packers.

Does that mean six more months of wondering what Rodgers will decide to do? And teams willing to wait around for his decision?

Time to move on from Rodgers and all the drama. Every team eventually has to go through a rebuild and IMHO that time is now for the Packers.

Hopefully he wants out and they can get some draft capital for him to start he rebuild.

They do have some talent on both sides of the ball and maybe go through a soft rebuild. If they can add talent in the coming draft, and Love is even mediocre, they have a chance to be competitive next season I think.

Bob I agree Shefter would be all over that of course.

Bill I totally agree with that. For the life of me I don't understand why GB puts up with him. But hey, they just gave him a huge contract right? Will he play? Does he want to play? Does he want out? Does he want to stay? Will he retire? My God make a decision!

Regarding Love, why did you trade up to draft the guy and then give Rodgers a king's ransom? Hmm...

If I were a Packers fan I would say good riddance but that is just me. You can't hold a team hostage to your own whims. Oh wait, that's exactly what he is doing.

Yeah I know, Packer fans are split on what to do with Rodgers but I am ready to move on.

He does not seem willing to work with the youngsters and only wants to throw to his veteran buddies so not sure we win with him next season as he refuses to adjust.

We went through this off season  drama with Farve and now the same BS with Rodgers.

If he decides to play next season and will accept a trade I say thank him for his service and let's move on.

A lot more has been made of it than there actually is. All I've heard and read is a lot of offseason click bait full of conjecture. But Rodgers hasn't done himself any favors by going on MacAfee every week and saying really dumb stuff, saying out loud every thought that passes through his head.

But technically he's not holding the team hostage, there's nothing to do until the next season period officially begins in March. As of now, he's under contract, a contract the Packers also agreed to at a time when Rodgers was MVP and their best option and Love was still an unknown. All parties knew how the contracts over-lapped and that a big decision was being punted down the road. It's been indicated everyone will have answers prior to the start of free agency period. No doubt the Packers organization is prepared either way, and it is known for avoiding distractions.

After last season fizzled out thanks to Rodgers insisting on playing with a broken thumb, most Packers fans are ready to turn the page and avoid more media circus. Football may not seem as important to him, but also $60m is a lot of money to walk away from.

Here's a fun cross-over. In his weekly column, Peter King gives some ink to a recent @alpaul Wall Street Journal article on the Allman Brothers & Jimmy Carter.

Derek Carr goes to the Saints. Seems like a decent fit, probably a more stable place for him than in the Davis household. And the NFC South sucks, so there's that.

The Raiders replace him with Garoppolo, which seems like a lateral move (salary aside). Then I remembered he started his career under McDaniels in New England.

Rodgers announced he's taking his talents to South Orange Beach. Obviously he didn't have too much choice, but hopefully Florio and Shefter and Stephen A can stop pretending like they've been figuratively held hostage. It all played out like we all thought, and in time for the start of free agency. But it that falls through, Matt Ryan is available!

Rodgers says a lot of dumb things, but in a way I feel bad for him. After being in the eye of the Favre Storm in 2008, he spent 15 years being mindful of what he said, trying to make sure he was in control of his future and career. And yet, here he is with the exact same option - for different reasons, of course, he certainly carried himself better than Favre did. But this wasn't "The Decision" and Rodgers had to be a little frustrated after 15 years of trying to say the right things only to find he was never really in control of his own destiny. Now he's clearly trying to make it sound like it's actually his decision and the Packers are dragging their feet getting the deal done, which is pretty silly because there's no way he dreamed of playing for the Jets before 2023.

Well, at the very least maybe Robert Saleh can tell him how his defenses always beat him.

For a guy who values communing/meditating in silence/darkness*

will Aaron adjust to/sparkle in the glitz/glitter, bright lights/neon signs of the city that never sleeps, incl round the clock press coverage

The Big Apple (NYJ) - that’s where he’s headed apparently

same Jimmy G w/Raidiz, that went official

*that’s what I’ve read

The football world lost a legendary sportswriter. I grew up in the metro Detroit area reading his columns. He covered the first 56 Super Bowls. I think the only person to do so.

News columnist Jerry Green, last to cover every Super Bowl, has died (detroitnews.com)
