And if the season ended today the Red Sux would not be in the playoffs. Hmm... 😉

Last night I was flipping back and forth between the Cubs and Sox games and I happened to have the Sox game on when that hit to the head of A's pitcher Chris Bassitt happened. Boy that was scary. I guess he was conscious when they took him to the hospital. He was released from the hospital and is going to need surgery from where the ball hit him in the face.

The Yanks are even surprising me as I gave them up for dead. Cashman's trades gave the team a shot in the arm and they are getting healthy at the right time.
Every time it looks like Cashman has one foot out the door he pulls off a great trade to right the ship. He did a great job getting Gallo and Rizzo while not giving up the teams best prospects. In fact some of the prospects he traded might have been lost in the Rule 5 draft as they have too many they would have needed to protect on the 40 man roster next year if he had not traded them so a brilliant move on his part while not taking on any more salary and staying under the cap.
The starting pitching has been fantastic the second half but the one area that could cause them to come up short is their bullpen. It is a mess right now and is getting by with smoke and mirrors. Britton looked good last night but he does not seem confident to close and Chapman is still not right. It will be interesting to see how it shakes out and if both of them turn around before the playoffs if the Yanks make it. They do have some pitching talent they can throw in the bullpen once they are healthy, German, Schmidt, maybe Gil if Kluber comes back, so they might be able to get by.
I was hoping Severino would give them a shot in the arm but with his mystery shoulder issue he may be done for the year.
With the Sox and Oakland struggling lately it looks like it will be an exciting race for the Wildcard spots right until the end this year.

He was one of their many greats - sad to hear
loved what Joe Maddon had to say about Tigers fans after they accorded Shohei Ohtani, what Maddon said was the loudest applause Ohtani has gotten in any road game this year after Shohei’s Wednesday game (40th HR, 8 lights-out IP) - “it doesn’t surprise me - they were raised by Ernie Hartwell”
let’s go Sox, 5 games to make up in five weeks is not a daunting task - but it’s gotta start this wknd w/lowly Tex

Harwell, not Hartwell. 😉 I think that whole thing with Jack Morris was overblown I listened to it and it didn't seem that bad but that is the uber sensitive world we live in. Ohtani even said he wasn't offended.
Regarding Harwell, I grew up on him. While there is this romantic thing about a little kid falling asleep with a transistor radio in his ear, well that was me. When I was little and listening to games a player would hit a foul ball and he would say "a fan from (fill in the blank of the name of the town in Michigan)" caught it. I always wondered how he knew where this person was from. It didn't dawn on me until I was older that he was just being funny.
One of the worst decisions the Tigers ever made was hiring Bo Schembechler as the G.M. and he fired Harwell. It was an outrage in Detroit. Thankfully, they brought him back and he didn't hold a grudge. He was one of the kindest, gentlest people I ever met.
His long time partner Paul Carey was amazed by his knowledge of baseball. Press guides have been in existence for decades and 'ol Ernie rarely used them I guess. He just went off of memory.

This is sad. I have literally thousands upon thousands of their cards. Their first "real" release was in 1952, the year of the famous Mickey Mantle rookie card (which wasn't actually his first card). They put out a couple of releases in 1951. But hey, they drove Bowman out of business and then used their name to print cards 40 years later. Just business I guess.

I saw commentary on this and this guy asked a good question, "What is he going to do with it?". That was the first thing I thought. Do you frame it and put it on your wall? Hide it under your bed? Put it in a safe where you can never look at it?
My guess is the buyer puts it away and tries to resell it down the road. Probably to another broker.
It is the nicest copy of it I have seen.

Cards of this value must be hard to flip due to the commissions. Assuming it is actually a collector rather than an investor I would assume it sits in their collection, likely in a safe, until said collector dies or liquidates their collection.

Posted by: @leeI kind of doubt that if you have 6 million laying around you around too aren't too concerned with a commission or brokerage fee.
The card's high bid was $5.5 million. Their is a 20% buyers premium, thus the 6.6 selling price. I've known people that are well off argue and bitch about about losing a point or two on management fees and broker commissions.
Those auction houses get you coming and going. Factoring their fees and commissions the buyer would be selling that card at a loss if they sold it today. It will be a bit for it to appreciate enough to break even and profit.

They also have to collect sales tax for over half of the states....sales tax on $6.6 million, ouch!

Montas of A’s, sailing along, 2-hitter thru 7 & nine K’s vs top team in baseball in huge Bay Area game -
& they pull him -
& AJ Puk promptly pukes it up giving up a 2-run HR
I understand, it’s the modern game, they’re all on restricted IPs/pitch counts in hopes of avoiding injury/fatigue etc
but Never would the greats been removed while at the top of their games like Montas was

At .311, Miggy is fifth in BA among the 28 players who’ve hit 500 HR - the only other righty hitters w/500 HR & a .300 BA are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Manny Ramirez & Frank Thomas
Cabrera also had 446 HR thru 2016, so he’s slowed down a lot in recent years - he’ll end up this year at about 2,980 or so hits

Finally, these two all time greats, Miguel Cabrera & Albert Pujols in 2021
Miggy, .246, 13 HR, 56 RBI
Albert, .243, 15 HR, 45 RBI as a key reserve for streaking LA (Cabrera 362 ABs, Pujols 243)
a treat for bball fans

The auction house has to collect sales tax in as many as 25-30 states for people who win their auctions. Like when you buy something online, they collect sales tax where they are legally required to do so. Robert Edwards would be charging the applicable sales tax amount for the winning bidder state on $6.6 million. Somewhere between an extra 5, 6, 7% depending on the state. Unless the winner is in a state where they do not have to collect sales tax.

I guess we misunderstood each other. I thought you meant sales tax would be charged in multiple states for one transaction. I'm an accountant, I understand how sales tax works. I used to have to file sales and use tax forms even if you weren't responsible for the tax. You still had to file the forms. 😉

You guys probably have real baseball to discuss. But I just got a letter from an auction house, telling me that items I previously have bought with them I could consign with them for 50% of the seller's commission. Seller's commission, buyers premium, sales tax all make it difficult to make a quick buck via auction houses.
People definitely do flip these type of things and the multiples from late 2019 to now alone are staggering. But the high end stuff via auction brokers make it difficult based off of what it actually sells for vs what you might've paid and what the auction house collects. Man those places must be flat out be making a mint these days.

Jesus - the once-great Orioles - looking at a 20/40 & it’s not even Labor Day - 20 game losing streak, 40 GB - they’ve been there since 1954 & it’s never been this bad, Including 1988, when they lost their 1st 21 games of that season…
other end, there it is, Giants & Dodgiz, in a league/race all their own just like always, going back to 1950s when they owned NY -
& yes, NY has blown past us - it’s pitching, no game is ever safe, but still think we can make a go of it yet, so let’s go Sox

@stephen Yankees final series of the season is vs TB. A lot can happen between now and then, but that could be a battle for the AL East.

The Yankees are getting healthy at the right time and their pitching has been stellar.
The only thing that worries me is the bullpen is still full of unknowns and overachieving right now. Chapman is a mess and Britton is most likely done for the year so that could be the area that ultimately blows up on them.
If Kluber comes back and pitches decently maybe German, Severino, and Gill go shore up the pen so we will see.
The September roster expansion rules have changed so teams can only carry 28 players after the 1st I believe. No more access to everyone on the 40 man roster in September anymore where teams could use basically all pitchers on the 40. Add the fact that pitchers must face a minimum of 3 batters before they can be pulled and having quality relievers are a must now.

I checked the Yanks schedule wondering about that and stopped at September. It will be a lot of fun if that last series in October means something!
I hate the one game play in thing.

@lee I'm not a huge fan of the sudden death wild card game, kind of feels like it should be a 3-game series. Tie-breaker games used to be a 3-game series, but now they're just a single game, too. I have no doubt MLB will expand to 6-8 teams and 3 full post-season rounds within the next decade.
If the season ended today, the AL Wild Card game would be Yanks-Red Sox, something the league and networks are probably drooling over. Both Boston and Oakland don't seem to want it - Seattle is right on their heels. Hooray September baseball!

That’s the way it’s looking, NY can do no wrong at the moment
but Chris Sale has been good so far, had an immaculate inning last night -
when no one goes to an A’s game w/NY in town, I now understand why they have no choice but to relocate - they’re very good but the Bay Area belongs to the Giants
lets go Sox, it ain’t over yet

Yeah a Yanks/Sux series would make a network VERY happy. But a best of three would make it even better as you say. I've been saying this for some time that it could be done scheduling wise. They did best of three last year in the playoffs.
This reminds me of the Bucky Dent game in 1978. I remember getting off the school bus and running to my buddy's house just in time to see that. What a game. 😊
Regarding playoff expansion I hope you are wrong. Why water it down and make it like the NBA & NHL?
