Clay Returns Sunday -- Sox fans want to see him do well -- he's w/a good team, AZ

"A good team"???
AZ has shit the bed, but Clay pitches tonite -- so far so good (0-1/no discomfort) -- Clay could become a savior for skidding D-backs 😮 😛

they won their series against lowly Miami -- now a series w/also-lowly Cincy, & yep --
…...PADS about to climb out of cellar in anemic NL west

SOME UNEASE THO -- it's the same lame injury so often seen -- "tightness in side, after a practice swing" -- but when it's Mookie -- not good -- get back quick Mookie Betts, our top player --
the left knee is bothersome, unfortunately -- But It's A Long seaon & should settle down for a long-enough period of time for DUSTIN PEDROIA to play extensively/effectively
Hanley, you are not forgotten -- now it's Houston

Just saw that Red Schoendienst passed away. R.I.P. That man spent a long time in The Bigs.

A career Cardinal -- managed them to the 1967-68 WS, bearing us in '67 -- Red Schoendienst as manager, Stan Musial as their GM, and Lou Brock & Curt Flood at the top of the order -- even Carl couldn't overcome them 😮

Bartolo, 45, tied Juan Marichal on the wins list with 243 -- was thinking Juan reached 243 in less innings, but the opposite is true -- Bartolo 3,300 IP, Juan 3,500

With the bottom of the order not hitting (Sandy is starting to) and no Mookie or Dustin, we won't be able to keep it up too much longer -- let's go Sox, a big game from Steven W Tues

The Braves do still have a team -- it's 90 years ago and they got both Rogers Hornsby and George Sisler -- the town was set on its ear & the Sox in second for a summer (1928) with these two charter HOFers on the same squad -- I remember it well 😉

Pitchers used to finish what they started. Marichal had 471 games to 550 for Colon.

Maricahl once beat Spahn 1-0 in 16 innings. When Alvin Dark wanted to remove him from the game Juan stated "I'm not coming out as long as that f**ng old man is still pitching."

Best pitcher never to win the Cy Young. Someone (Koufax; Drysdale: Gibson: Seaver) always had a season just a little bit better

Along with Koufax only pitcher with three 25 win seasons in the modern era

I think Bob Welch won 27 in 1990.

Given the way they are playing the game now, who knows if anyone could win 20. And MLB wonders why games takes so long. Fat guy waddling out of the dugout to change pitchers five or six times a game.

I think Phil Neikro won AND lost over 20 in the same season. That is something that will never happen again.

Same Steve "Lefty" Carlton, who won 27 of Phils' 59 wins in 1972 -- 346 IP, players now would sue if they had to pitch that many innings
yep, LAD used eight pitchers in a 9 inning (8.5) game Wed -- Pirates used six, game took 3:48 to play -- I would be more bored than into it at a game like that, even w/the 11-9 final score
Berrios, however, had a CG 6-hitter ystrdy (for MN) -- they've become such an overregulated politically incorrect rarity

I have always found this amazing. How many games would they have lost without him? If he could have pitched 500 innings would he have won 40? I would have pitched him every third day. Okay, probably not but you get the idea.

Ya think long time Cardinal fans think "what if?"

Too bad he kind of tarnished his legacy by sticking around too long. Even when I was a teen I thought he needed to call it a day.

Not the nicest guy in the world but a great pitcher.

Left only stayed around 2-3 years after it was over. Not horrible.

And yeah; he was a beast in 72. Perhaps the best slider ever. And I guess his trade was the Yin to the Yan when they got Lou Brock.

You have to figure he learned a few things from Gibson - who was perhaps the greatest beast of all time.

As Gibson said to Tim McCarver when Tim had the balls to come out to tell Gibson how to pitch
"The only thing you know about good pitching is that you can't hit it."

Give ya that on the Lou Brock trade. God Cub fans have to hate that one. Hall of Famer for a washed up pitcher. I think he had one or two good years.

I do still think Carlton hung on too long.

Kinda of like the Goldilocks sx - cause those three (Koufax; Brown; Sanders) were too soon. Carlton too late

Now Peyton Manning and John Elway - those were "just right"

Four of the six divisions are tied at the top -- Seattle has won 18 of 23 -- it's huge in Milwaukee w/Cubs in town, they're tied for 1st --
Pirates gotta get going by pulling away from .500 starting tonite -- However, standing in the way is Clay 😮 -- sure enough -- 24 carefully-monitored IP spread out over four starts -- 21 K's, allowed just 17 hits & has a 1.88 ERA, so hooray for Clay, hopefully he keeps going good after tonite

MadBum is back, Johnny Cueto & Brandon Belt are nearing returns -- they have Andrew McCutchen & Evan Longoria on a team w/Buster Posey, Hunter Pence
...& w/Pablo Sandoval backwhere he wants to be & playing well -- he looked positively like a speedster legging out an infield hit recently -- Ya The SF Baseball Giants are poised to take over anemic NL West

Family has been Giant fans since prior to 1900. Hope Madbum returns to form. ? Cueto? Posey still tops. Think Longoria and Metucheon are past their top games.

But yes; the division is weak. If they can eke into the playoffs and Madbum returns to full they can ride the bull

Seattle has won 18 of 23 --

Players like Miggy & Dustin, MAYB, should be/could be looking at the end of great careers -- they've been at it a long time -- Pedey says he still thinks he can return -- his knee is unpredictable, they said it'd be that after his operation

But yes, we see them this wknd., David Price & King Felix tmrw nite -- Mookie should play
3 good innings, then Bucs blew Clay outta the box in 4th before getting blown out themselves

And the Tiggers owe Miggy a ton of guaranteed money. Not sure what they were thinking when they signed him to the contract extension.

In this matchup of ex-Cy Young winners, 32, David is 5-0 in his last 6 starts, 7-4 overall -- Felix (6-5) has been uneven this season -- we gotta somehow continue to fatten up his ERA tonite, it's 5.70 right now, David's 4.00 -- their race w/Houston is as close as ours is w/NY, as the top 4 teams in MLB

Dubious distinction in Baltimore -- at 27 GB, further out of first place at this 1/3rd mark of the season than almost any team ever, including expansion NY Mets of early 1960s

Reading about the Yankees search for upgraded starting pitching and it reminds me how much I hate the one off wild card games.

When it was one wild card only a strong team finishing second didn’t lead them to make drastic moves. Young players were left to develop. Trades were deferred. I truly think there was less concentration of power

You had the thread title right before -- the Boston Braves 😮
SPAHNIE
June 14, 1952
Boston pitcher Warren Spahn goes all 15 innings, fanning 18 Cubs but losing the game 3-1, despite hitting a HR for Boston's only run
Let's go Sawx, it's huge in Seattle this wknd

How did I miss this one too
June 14, 1974
Nolan Ryan whiffs 19 batters in 13 innings, including Cecil Cooper six consecutive times, in the Angels' 4-3 victory over Boston in 15 innings in Anaheim. The RHP's performance will be the first of three 19-strikeout outings the Texan throws this season.

Good start, good start -- tonite is likely to be identical, ie well pitched game w/Sox winning -- their kid is 6-1, & ups to Rick (8-3) -- he didn't miss a turn last year & hasn't so far this -- a crucial one to get 2nite w/our 4 & 5 going the 2 wknd games

Paper (Herald) didn't have that Nolan R blurb -- it did have Warren's, also this on a June 14 the Sox'd like to forget
1969
Reggie Jackson drives in 10 runs in Oakland's 21-7 rout of the Sox. The A's outfielder's offensive output in the Fenway Park contest includes a pair of two-run homers, a double, and a single.

Made it to Wrigley last weekend. It was a fun time. We were in the last row of the upper deck behind home plate which was a great view.

??? -- yes I was aware of that -- just wanted to mention Warren's 1952 gem as a Braves player -- you renamed the thread "Are they still the Boston Braves" last week --
also June 14, in 1965, Jim Maloney pitched a 10-inning no-hitter for the Reds & lost.
He did it again later that summer, this time winning -- I don't think even Warren did that in one season

Didn't know about Maloney's. Can't be as heart breaking as Harvey Haddix pitching 13 perfect innings and losing. I read this thing where this writer suggested Haddix should be credited with throwing a no hitter since he went nine innings without giving up a hit. I found that thought interesting.

Same Here -- some sort of recognition for a 9-inning no-no is warranted -- crazy w/Maloney tho, twice in 1 season -- a Reds great (1960-70) -- 134-84 lifetime W-L -- 20-9, 2.77 ERA, in 255 IP in 1965
