That's kind of funny, leaves an impression. Always pays to be nice.

"The Kid" is a pretty common baseball nickname, and Yount was "the Kid" when he started in 1974 at 18. Wasn't it you who didn't know the Brewers are nicknamed "the Crew" - maybe you just have a blind spot for Milwaukee. I'm the same way with the Mets, growing up I thought they were a AAA team.

1977 NICKNAME ROBIN YOUNT

I thought it was The Brew Crew but I got it. And of course Harvey's Wallbangers. That was clever.

Regarding my Yount experience I will bore you with my story. So it is 1984 and my pals and I got either my freind's dad or my grandpa to take us to Tiger Stadium. Us kids wanted to get there early so we could try to get autographs. We crowded around the visitor's dugout on the first base line. We all brought our baseball cards. All three of us got several. I brought a few pocket schedules for guys to sign is I didn't have a card. At the time I didn't have a Bob Eucker card so he signed my sked. We was kinda rude, not like someone you would see on TV.

I still have them all. Never dawned on me but I actually got four Hall of Famers (five if Eucker is in something), Fingers, Sutton, Molitor and Yount.

So our one friend had a little league game and couldn't go with us. He gave me a card of Yount's and asked me to try to get him to sign it. It was the only one he gave me and Yount was the only guy I asked for more than one. So I politely asked Yount because my friend couldn't make it because he had a little league game. Yount looks at me and says and I remember this today, "No Because Your Friend Is Yourself". I was kind of stunned. Now if that happened a handful of years later I probably would have torn up the one he did sign and thrown it at him. Was it the end of the world? No, of course not.

Don't recall who won. 😉

@lee haha that's an awesome story. I mean, it does sound like "asking for a friend", but it's funny that he put his foot down. He was on the road, I wonder if he pulled that at County Stadium.

Well it wasn't like I was going to put it on ebay but I did know there was a market for that kind of thing in the 80s. There was a magazine called "Sports Collectors Digest" that was based out of Milwaukee actually. It used to be a great mag. Came out every two weeks. Now I think they just sell autographs. I still have a bunch of old copies. I wish I had kept them all.

The nicest guy of the team that day was Jim Gantner, their second baseman. It was just me and him and he asked if I was rooting for the Brewers that night. I was honest. I said, "well no but will you sign anyway?". He kind of laughed and said of course he would sign, you have to root for the local team. I said but I was rooting for you in The World Series two years ago. This was true. I don't think he wanted to talk about that. 😉

Great series btw. Seven games.

Interesting picture of that "card". As soon as I saw it I knew it was kind of a caricature if you will of his 1977 Topps card. Cool picture. Here is the real one. Him trying to lay down a bunt.

Okay, just got home and I forgot one last thing about that night with the Brewers at Tiger Stadium and then I'll leave it alone. 😀 My grandpa and my friends' dad went somewhere and left us three kids in our seats. They were right behind the front aisle on the lower level. Their dad brought a radio to the game. He wanted to listen to Ernie Harwell call the game. This radio was a plastic thing that could wrap around poles, posts, things of that nature. My friends' dad put it on the rail separating our seats from the aisle. Well, these drunk guys come by and this guy takes a swing at the radio. Not sure how he did it but he coldcocked that radio and didn't hit the rail at all.

My friends are sitting there with probably "wtf" looks on our faces. One of the guy's friends gets out his wallet and gives us a $20 bill because he felt bad. I don't think any of us really cared about the radio, we were glad to get 20 bucks. We kinda crawled in the aisle and the seats in front of us to grab all of the pieces of this thing, dodging the beer and hot dog vendors.

We explained the whole thing and got to split our $20. And somehow my friends' dad was able to make that radio work. I can't believe we were able to find everything.

There was an old guy sitting behind us that said he should have bought us a beer instead. 😊

So Bumgarner throws a seven inning no-hitter that doesn't count as such.

https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb-madison-bumgarner-no-hitter-history-padres-dodgers-jacob-degrom-mets-bryce-harper-the-monday-9-134717600.html

I don't understand the logic. An official game can be four and a half innings. I remember a few that were originally called no-hitters but then changed. Harvey Haddix pitched 12 innings of no hit ball and didn't get one.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/25/sports/baseball/madison-bumgarner-no-hitter.html

Not saying one thing is right or wrong but I find it interesting how rules are made.

Lee, 4th??🤪3rd at best???😆🤙- looks to me like we’re gonna go all the way....to the end of the season, haha - & who knows what-then😮

After one month it looks like my prediction could be terrible. Red Sux are on pace to win 102 games. But again, it was one month.

Supposed to be in the 80 plus degree range here this weekend so I might go see the White Sux play. Always fun to root against them. Even if it's to the Indians. 😛

Have fun Lee (go Tribe) - has Comiskey opened up fully now? Or just a %age of fans allowed? this aspect of things I haven’t kept track of - seems to vary place to place, sport by sport

But ya we’re playin over our heads - wouldn’a guessed we’d have the April we had - hope we don’t come back to earth - hoping Tygiz knock off chronically injured NY today & tmrw - read an article recently on “why NYY is the softest team in sports”

@stephen

Didn't go to the game. This weekend is sold out. I think Comiskey lets in somewhere in the 8,500 - 9,000 range to your question. I know several people who are White Sux fans and have been there this past week and they all said their safety protocols aren't strictly enforced. My friends got into one of the bars the other night during a rain delay between two games of a doubleheader. They also hung out in the concourse in an area that wasn't theirs and drank beer. Kinda like my experience at Wrigley. There were a lot of people hanging on a rail looking at Clark St drinking beer.

Hopefully this will soon be a thing of the past. 😀 If things keep heading in the right direction more fans will be allowed in. Surprised at how many people certain teams let in.

Gotcha - yeesh now they’re really drownin’ their sorrows - Luis Robert, one of their promising young players, down for the count legging out a grounder, & joins Jimenez on the shelf for the season, or most of it in Robert’s case - 2 key cogs & it’s still early - welcome back Tony LaRussa

but every fan was relieved that that pitch only glanced off Bryce Harper’s face & didn’t strike it flush - his video msg that all was good, was good to see & considerate of him to do

Tygiz will turn it around at some point, let’s make sure it’s not against us - that’s our thinking at the moment - let’s go Sox

I caught the last few innings of the Orioles game and it was fun watching that kid throw a no-no. Some of the scoring rules in baseball confound me. Means got all 27 batters out yet he isn't credited with a perfect game because a guy got to first on a wild pitch. Even though he struck out. He got everyone out so why isn't that a perfect game?

RIP Del Crandall - the last surviving member of the Boston Braves - great baseball guy, solid catcher, member of their 1957-58 WS teams, recall having his card - solid manager - Robin Yount’s 1st mgr as an 18 yr old

——-

A great career comes to an end as LAA cuts Albert Pujols - watta great when he was in NL

——-

Yeah as was mentioned last month, Miggy may not be far behind Albert - he’s hitting .098 - but a Det. great, & yep - once again they’re giving us all we can handle (8-7 Sawx bottom 6)

Sad to see Albert Pujols' career likely come to an end. But I suppose it is time. His time in California was nothing like in St. Louis. He actually wasn't that old when he first went out west. As I've posted before, I wish Miggy would bow out. At least he could leave on his terms. Nobody is going to sign him after Detroit. Both first ballot HOFers though.

Remember when the A.L. East was Yanks, Boston, Detroit, Toronto, Milwaukee, Cleveland & Baltimore? Now two of those teams are in a different division and one is in a different league. And there is a team in that didn't even exist. 😮

Well the Tiggers are now on pace to finish 44 and 118. I think that's pretty close to the record for losses.

My bet with a buddy over who wins the most games in Chicago is getting interesting. The Sux are only one game ahead of the Flubs. Still think the Sux will win more.

Yeah, forget the scorecard, I hardly even recognize MLB itself in its current state

gotta say tho, I like the idea of a runner on 2nd base to start xtra innings, also 7 innings in doubleheaders

dont remember four no hitters this early in the season

but yeah it’s an L6 for KC & ChiSox are in 1st place - woulda made the same bet as you did w/your friend - no Jiminez or Robert makes it interesting tho

hope your leg is feeling better all the time - looked up Cabrera & Pujols, boy were they the shit in their primes - yep 1st ballot inductions both

Yeah, teams have switched around, moved, changed names, etc. forever. Look at football and hockey. Well, basketball too.

Gotta respectfully disagree about the rule changes. I got it last year due to the circumstances but why now? And if you're a stats person, which is a big part of the tradition of baseball, don't those two moves kind of change things? A hitter could get an RBI that he might not have otherwise. And a hitter could also lose an at bat in a seven inning game. On the other hand, people were up in arms when baseball went to the 162 game schedule which allowed Maris to beat out Ruth so who knows?

And the White Sux are indeed scrambling. To lose two of your best players has to hurt. LaRussa said they aren't interested in Pujols. Nowhere to fit him in really.

Cubs are starting to play a bit better but I still think they have the lowest batting average in all of baseball.

And thanks for the foot comment. Fingers crossed.

Speaking of, there's more talk about the A's leaving Oakland if they don't get a stadium. Warriors and Raiders are already out the door so Oakland will have to do something if they want to keep a team. Hard to imagine the A's not playing near the Giants after all these years, but they could be on their way to their 4th city.

I'm split on the extra innings baserunner, but I mostly like it. Games have gotten too long and the extra innings gas bullpens in an already lengthy season where pitchers are blowing their arms out every week. I get it makes for wonky stats - an RBI without a hit or a walk? It's kind of like college football OT where teams can tack on 30 points in TDs. But after 9 innings, someone just has to win.

re: Boston Americans - not every team had a mascot at the turn of the century (when the AL was founded). Some were given nicknames by the locals (New York Highlanders) or by what colors they wore (Red Stockings). Some teams were referred to by what league they were in (as opposed to the Boston Braves). That's why the Washington Nationals is such a throwback name.

Were there ever tigers or lions in Detroit, giants or titans in New York, Spartans in East Lansing, MI? Was Cleveland inundated with spiders? 😛

@lee

Actually the story is the Tigers got their nickname from their orange socks. Lions' name was inspired by the Tigers after the Portsmouth Spartans moved to Detroit. It was pretty common for football teams to hitch their wagon to the local baseball team, especially if they shared a stadium (Pittsburgh Pirates, NY Giants, Bears/Cubs, Tigers/Giants, Braves/Red Sox/Redskins, etc).

Regarding the Giants, the NY Gothams changed their nickname after their manager exclaimed, "My big fellows! My giants!" after a successful season.

Not sure about dock spiders though 😉

I did always wonder why Michigan chose the Wolverines as their mascot. There are gophers in Minnesota, there are Badgers in WI, there are Hawks in Iowa, there are wildcats in Illinois, but no wolverines in MI.

Some interesting theories: https://campusinfo.umich.edu/article/victor-views-history-behind-wolverine

I looked up MSU Spartans history - they were originally the Aggies, being an Agriculture school, until 1925.

To reduce the emphasis on agriculture, the college held a contest to choose a new team name. The chosen entry was the "Michigan Staters." George S. Alderton, then sports editor of the Lansing State Journal, and Dale Stafford, sportswriter for the Lansing Capitol News, felt the name was too unwieldy for newspaper headlines and searched the contest entries for a better choice. They settled on the "Spartans", a name submitted by former Aggie athlete Perry J. Fremont. Alderton and Stafford began using the name in their game accounts, and it soon caught on as the de facto team name. Michigan State's teams have been the Spartans ever since.

There actually were wolverines in northern Michigan and the U.P. many moons ago. I think they went the way of the buggy whip.

A statue of Sparty stands on the campus of MSU, between the football stadium and the old basketball arena. I had an office not far from there.

As an MSU alum with family roots to spartans, I feel like they need to change the name as it disrespects my ancestry. 😛

Perhaps I will riot in East Lansing. Oh wait, they already did that a long time ago.

Here's one I never heard before:

Before the 1890 season, almost all of the Alleghenys' best players bolted to the Players' League's Pittsburgh Burghers. The Players' League collapsed after the season, and the players were allowed to go back to their old clubs. However, the Alleghenys also scooped up highly regarded second baseman Lou Bierbauer, who had previously played with the AA's Philadelphia Athletics. Although the Athletics had failed to include Bierbauer on their reserve list, they loudly protested the Alleghenys' move. In an official complaint, an AA official claimed the Alleghenys' signing of Bierbauer was "piratical". This incident (discussed at some length in The Beer and Whisky League, by David Nemec, written in 1994) quickly accelerated into a schism between the leagues that contributed to the demise of the A.A. Although the Alleghenys were never found guilty of wrongdoing, they made sport of being denounced for being "piratical" by renaming themselves "the Pirates" for the 1891 season.

Hoping the Brewers can rebound, especially against the Cards. They've been in a bit of a tail spin after a nice early run. They could use Yelich one of these days.

I hadn't realized, but since the realignment to 3 divisions in each league, the Pirates have never won the NL Central. Granted there were 6 teams packed into it for a few years, but that's quite a while to go without winning your division (they won the NL East in 1992). I looked it up and the Rockies and Marlins never won their division.

Tygiz’ve won 3 in a row tho - meanwhile Sawx’ve lost a like # - A’s are damn good, yeah the irony of them getting the bum’s rush from Oakland, wtf - they should be packin that big stadium every nite - but they never do -

have read MLB is trying to force em to build a new stadium, I say leave it, it’s the last of the cavernous cookie cutters😝(also Chavez Ravine) - a relic, a dinosaur, 1 of a kind🦕

but I don’t think we’ll go the way of KC tho…..🪐....i hope…😮 it’s happened to C’s🏀

……B’s see Wash 1st round, I love Z but he’s now the enemy & let’s hope he’s not on the ice or part of anything if any fights break out w/his goon teammate Wilson

they’re very good & we’ll have our hands more than full - yes this would be a particularly sweet playoff win…
