Seems to be having the opposite effect he intended.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/26/us/politics/abbott-immigration-texas-dc-biden.html

“In a way, it’s actually perfect,” said Bilal Askaryar, a spokesman for Welcome With Dignity, a collective of about 100 local and national groups that help migrants. “Unintentionally, Governor Abbott sent them to one of the best places in the nation to welcome people.”

____

“These are all migrants who have been processed by C.B.P. and are free to travel,” Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, recently said, referring to Customs and Border Protection, the agency that oversees border operations. “So, it’s nice the State of Texas is helping them get to their final destination.”

If Abbott is too overwhelmed to help migrant families, maybe he shouldn't be Governor of a border state. And NYC always has a lot of opportunities for immigrants, even the undocumented ones.

That said, it's kind of horrible of Abbott to just shuttle people around rather than deal with the problem. It's his state, he should deal with the issues housed within it.

@porkchopbob I saw the NYC mayor on TV yesterday - pretty much complaining about how his city's resources are being stretched with this influx of humanity.  The Texas governor is wrong in his actions.  But when we (the United States or its President) decide to welcome all comers, the problem becomes a NATIONAL one.  Putting these immigrants on buses bound for NY (or other destinations) won't solve the national problem.  Maybe Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California et al should receive FEDERAL funds to alleviate this situation?  It is a complex issue.  Complex issues rarely have simple answers.  Just sayin'.

Pardon my one-track mind, but I've stated for years that if cannabis was made legal nationally (U.S.) and in Mexico - that country would have a viable cash-crop for export.  Instead of sending ALL of our manufacturing to China - how about a few more plants in Mexico?  Being our nearest neighbor, we should probably invest more there than in Asia?  Of course, if these opportunities were available, we might have to pick our own lettuce and scrub our own toilets.  Complex stuff!

@rusty Totally agree. These are people, and often when the issue is complex the solutions are harder to come by. Kicking the hornet's nest down the road isn't helpful.

To elaborate, "isn't helpful" is an understatement. By doing this Abbott becomes just another human trafficker. I get he's trying to make a statement and get Federal attention, but it's incredibly tone deaf, if not heartless. NYC (and DC, etc) has its own homeless problems that it is trying to deal with in shelters and resources. Can you imagine if they just bussed them all to Houston? It's not how an elected official deals with his own responsibilities (it's not like immigration is a new issue in TX). It's absolutely not how a grown man treats desperate people. If he doesn't want to find solutions to the problem in his backyard, then he should move to another state.

Good post.

I think Abbott is trying to make a statement about the influx of immigrants into/through his border state and he/states population  is probably tired of it. Whether you think he is right or wrong in his actions is  up for debate. It is a very complex issue like you mentioned Rusty. It is problem every where in the USA.  People want out of that country for many reasons. How does Mexico fix that? It's been an ongoing problem for decades.

It sounds like the mayor and Bilal Askaryar and Jen Psaki are not on the same page.

I don't know anyone who holds Eric Adams' opinion in high regard.

But they're both not wrong - Abbott shouldn't be using these people as pawns to make a statement, but also, these people are free to accept bus fare to get the hell out of Texas.

These immigrants aren't just from Mexico, there are several caribbean and south/central American countries they hail from. Many have been from Haiti and Venezuela and are seeking asylum from recent political unrest.

Luckily NYC is used to taking in immigrants. The increase may be stretching resources, but NYC is working hard to take care of the matter at hand.

During the City Council hearing, Castro referred to the current episode as a “historic surge” but said arriving immigrants would be treated with dignity.

“New York is a city of immigrants, and we will always welcome newcomers with open arms. Once you’re here, you’re a New Yorker, and we have your back,” said Castro, who is himself an immigrant and recipient of DACA

There's no single answer, I get Texans want to see the Feds do more, but there were 1.7 million illegal migrants arrested by Border Patrol in 2021.
