I have been trying very hard this week to conjure up anything besides "I don't care" when it comes to this situation and am not having much luck, does that make me a bad person?

For sure. It makes you very bad. This really matters.

As others have mentioned, now he's wearing pig socks that mock police officers. Does anyone here think THAT is a legitimate form of protest?

This doesn't sound like him. There was a smiley attached and I presume he understands the meaning of what they connote symbolically. The one he chose is : P or just kidding on some sites. (I had to look it up.)

As someone who cares very much about the issue of racial injustice I don't think he helped the cause.

Not by wearing pig socks, no, not by a long shot................

i usually change the channel or go get a beer or go take a leak during the National Anthem

There was an interesting column in the NYT today questioning why the anthem is played at sporting events. Apparently we're just about the only nation that does that.

Oh no, here it comes. A PC move to try to stop the anthem from being played before games. Too arrogant or insensitive or some other bullshet.

The point is true, though, we are about the only country that plays its anthem before every sporting event. Round the world, you usually only hear anthems played before international, country vs. country events. I doubt the playing of the anthem here is in any danger.

Canada plays our anthem also and the American one also if the game involves a US team.

Aside from the Patriotic angle, I think it allows people to bond and forces some to show respect for two minutes. In today's society, I think that is a good thing as often common sense and respect are lacking. Lots of ways that CK could get his point across instead of a method that distracts from his message and just causes more debate unrelated to his point.

I don't think that something that actually creates some unity amongst all races should be used in a matter that can only cause further divide.

Apparently I'm not the only one who has a problem with Colin Kaepernick's socks. How would YOU feel if you were a sensitive, honest, caring police officer being asked to work a 49ers game when the QB is wearing a depiction of a pig with a cop hat on?

i had the same problem bhawk.

That makes three of us. It's just another overblown story. Way overblown.

In that regard, CK was successful.

Sure he was. He was successful in dragging race into the one place we can go to get away from it. Sports is supposed to be a diversion.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sometimes the simplest things get so confusing, especially since I've gotten older.

I don't care what the guy does. If he wants to do a headstand during the anthem, be my guest. Never mind that, he's made a fool out of himself and is liable to get himself killed once the games start.

I think Americans have become so inured to charges of injustice and racism that it is hard for minorities to raise the issue in a constructive way. Kaepernick is probably more than happy on the attention this is receiving.

All of this kind of reminds me of the complaints of British soldiers when they said Indians were not fighting fair when they attacked at supper time or at night. Please, let's not spoil the football game!

I had no problem with him sitting to raise attention to the issue, but then he followed that up with idiotic behavior that probably did more harm than good to the issue. Now people like The Goober and alloak can point to his pig-cop socks and say, "See!".

Yeahboy......I'm sure to get all riled up about a pair of socks. You got me!

Killed?

Anyway, I'm glad you don't care what he does. I was afraid he had ruined your use of sports as a diversion from life.

Now I am confused. Alloak has made about 6 posts on a topic that he says is way overblown. 😛

I don't agree with his methods, but why do some people think he's talking about himself? Obviously he's a privileged athlete. He never said America is unfair to him. He's saying America is unfair towards others. He's saying America ain't so great. Maybe he just wants to make America great again?

Spot on.

Sports and politics - Oil and Water.

Spent the last three weeks in Orlando at Mickey World and chatted with people from all over the States. Happy that you are all still more united than the media and forums like this make it appear. Regardless of race or political slant, it is obvious that issues like CK's actions are media driven and the average American is far more proud and united than some would have you believe. Happy that this Whipping Post is not representative of actual society and beliefs - just a pissing match of extreme opinions.

Also obvious that you need a third party as no one likes either Hilary or Trump.

CK is just one more opinion. Same with every other athlete, singer or actor.

Again plenty of ways to give an opinion without using the National Anthem. It is about respect, unity and pride. Things that the USA stand for. Strange when a Canadian cares more about that then some Americans.

From the football angle, there will definitely be some that give a little extra to that hit.

Actually this Whipping Post is your standard middle of the road American dialogue. Pretty tame really. A pretty good model of how this country argues with itself. Extremists tend to cancel themselves out of here pretty fast.

Oh thank you almighty Candian one, to help us lost souls here in the Whipping Post. For what would we do without your knowledge and vision. I forgot 100% of the Canadian population properly cares about those values. What a country!

Thank you. I agree. Nice to quote just a part to put it out of context. You really fooled everyone with that. That would be Almighty Canadian though. Not big on candy. Most up here just call me James though. Almighty is a bit to God-like but Supreme would work.

Again - I am glad that some of you do not represent the average American in terms of National Pride or intelligence. Restored my faith in my neighbors to the South.

I get that Bob and of course Freedom and Freedom Of Expression is a given. But with so many methods and avenues to express opinions today with social media, I don't think disrespecting the National Anthem or burning the Flag are methods that should be used. It creates a different debate and takes away from an individuals point. Pisses off people that may have agreed.

Not too long ago, I think the vast majority of Americans would fully agree with that and would take offence with either act. The fact that some are OK with that now is.......well sad.

Obviously it is your freedom of choice to disagree and if you are fine with either act then you have made your choice.

I just think that there are better and more appropriate ways and would not pollute his message.

I agree, and also any kind of protest that causes any inconvenience to society, like disrupting say traffic, or shopping areas. And nix those pesky marches, too. Protests should be held in remote corners of parks, and be limited to handing out coloring books with upbeat issue-related themes.

Hopefully they give out a wide range of crayons with those and not just the bland three color pack.

“I am disgusted with the way [Kaepernick] has been treated and the fans and hatred he has received in all of this. It is overtly racist. ‘Stay in your place, black man.’ Just didn’t feel right to me. We need a more substantive conversation around race relations and the way people of color are treated.”

Canadians also have their political moments. There are plenty who wish Neil Young would keep his politics out of his music.

Canadians have this duality that is intriguing. In one guise they are noted internationally for being passive. I was in the company of some Americans who taught at McGill in Montreal and they were slinging Canadian jokes. The funniest one to them was how do you get five drunk Canadians out of a hot tub. Just announce gentlemen it's time to go home. It was obvious none of these guys had ever been in a Canadian pub when it was announced the bar would close early.

And on the other side is the Canadian expression of their passionate selves. When Canadians get really passionate in public it is always about some political issue or another it seems. Paul Martin a Canadian saboteur who likes to ram whalers at sea found one in Lisbon Harbor. The crew was hesitant so Martin put them ashore and then pointed his ship at the whaler. And on a bright
otherwise peaceful day Paul Martin rammed that whaler in front of a huge crowd who had come to the port to enjoy the weather. Many
probably wished that Mr. Martin had just sat during the flag raising.

This video shows Canadians at their most passionate playing their favorite sport. I personally believe that this was the event that won the Cold War.

If there ever was an instruction guide for dictatorships to adopt democratic principles this meeting of the Canadian parliament is it. The hidden message I get is fu_K protocol and let's just have fun.
