"Merry XMAS" or "Why I Will Never Own a Pit Bull"

If Michael Vick had been attacked by one of his dogs, and you didn't know the rest of the story regarding how they were trained or treated, one would probably sympathize with Vick.
Likewise, it seems this story is far from complete, making judgment a bit difficult.

There is nothing wrong with the breed. It is the breeders and/or owners that train them to be vicious and fight that are at fault. All dogs can be aggressive if trained to be. There are plenty of dangerous breeds out there.

Our pit bull is only dangerous if you get your shins near its tail.

He bit his owner once and his girlfriend's son. When they bite they are telling you THEY are in control, THEY are the alpha dog, THEY will make decisions. If it is not a full mauling, their bite is (in their minds) a correction to the person they are biting. If a dog does that, he will continue to be a threat to his owner and those around him, because in his mind, HE's in charge. Even if they just growl at you, they are CHALLENGING you for position in their pack. GROWLING is a warning, and the dog needs to be corrected if he/she is doing that, because THEY CANNOT BE IN CHARGE.

This.
Pitbulls are not all attack dogs or dangerous. I've lived with one, and lived with two pit-bull mixes and they all were trained to be friendly and nice.
Gina is correct. A dog should not be in charge or think that it is in charge.

Agreed. It's a shame that a bunch of sh1t heads who mistreat such a sweet breed allowed it to get such a bad rep, but it's bullshit. No one ever says "I'll never get a chicken, they are vicious." An abused elephant will attack its owner/trainer, that doesn't mean elephants have an aggressive disposition.
So yes, if you rescue ANY dog, be careful - know it's history. But they are one of the sweetest, and their devotion to their owners make for amazing pets - unless than owner abuses it.

I owned an American Staffordshire Terrier from the time it was a puppy until it died of old age. For the most part, Prince was a sweetheart of a dog. He played with my nieces and nephews when they were small children with no problems or issues.
Problems arose when a brat kid next door began to torment Prince with high pressure garden hoses, rocks and even fireworks. In response, Prince would run to the chain-ink fence and bark and the brat. Brat's mom called police constantly, saying she felt that Prince was a threat to her darling son.
Eventually, we were made to keep Prince chained. He was amazingly strong! Typically I'd come home and Prince and his large, sturdy dog house would be waiting at the entry of the driveway - after he'd dragged it from the back of the yard (about 150 feet).
There were a couple of incidents where stray dogs would find their way into the fenced yard and help themselves to Prince's food. I had to pull Prince off of two dogs, his jaws locked tight onto their necks. These dogs can be very territorial and that's usually where the problems arise.
He was a real prince, but I know he could have great damage to someone if they provoked him. I miss him.
