Exactly my point - the meaning of the flag is what 90% of America believes it to be - if nobody is aware of the history behind it, it becomes a moot point, rendering your comment utterly baseless.

Then why all the need to remove it from the public's consciousness?

Because first movies, then tv, then school books made it out to be a symbol of servitude. Fringe groups decided that the symbol of the Confederate Naval Battle Flag would fit their "separatist" image.

It's actually no more a symbol of slavery than the Union flag until 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified.
On the day of Lincolns' first inauguration, less than 5 miles from the Capitol where he took the oath of office, freed salves who had not paid their jail fees or taxes, were auctioned off.

The quote is what the designer believes, not others. There are a lot of families down here that have original flags held onto because of the family history associated with it. Not because of what the designer thought.

How do you know? Are we to believe that most people in the South are as knowledgeable as you are about this? Call me crazy but I'll bet my bottom dollar that at least 90% of southerners who fly that flag don't have a clue about anything you posted. These 90% are as mislead as the rest of us who think it means support for segregation - if it means otherwise, then a bunch of ya'll did a really poor job teaching it to one another.

There is a town in south Ga that flies the Confederate flag all the time. Has lots of statues of Confederate heroes and Union heroes. Thinks of itself as a true Southern Town.
It was founded by past members of the Union Army.

This is a good point.

Do any of you know when the last group of slaves were set free, and where that was?
Has anyone here read the Emancipation Proclamation, or the 13th Amendment?
You might want to. Just don't be too shocked when you do.

All leads up to the point that there was/is plenty of oppression of black people under the Union flag, and Marshawn Lynch is well justified in his symbolic protest.

Which brings this thread back to corral nicely.
