Religious groups have never had more freedom to practice and less persecution, especially Christian sects because he certainly isn't speaking on behalf of Jewish and Muslims who actually have been persecuted in the US in recent years. Based on recent Supreme Court decisions, Alito's idea of "religious freedom" is state sponsorship (as if being tax-free isn't enough). This is kind of nuts coming from one of the highest Jurists in the country, and an interpreter of our Constitution.
Alito is kind of nuts! The biggest threat to democracy is the Christian Nationalists who believe the US is not only a theocracy but a Christian theocracy. I don't understand where they got that idea; they obviously have no education in history because most of the Founders were atheists and uber atheists who wanted to ensure that this American government NEVER mixed religion in law-making or enforcement. They seem to have blinders on that the demographics of the US include Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists, agnostics, et al.
We now know Roberts was lobbying Kavanagh hard & was close to succeeding on Dobbs when - oops - there's a leak of the draft opinion that would make it awkward (?) for Kavanagh to change his vote. He said in his opinion - & continues to say in speeches - that judicial restraint is also a SCOTUS value that was tossed out along w/precedent. Kagan, Sotomayor, & even Barrett have recently spoken out that a SCOTUS in which the people have no confidence is no court at all.
