I would not leave a child alone with a pit bull nor a toy poodle. You just never know what the child might do to set off the dog. Or what the dog might be feeling about the child.

As much as I adored my ferrets I would never leave them alone with young children. They have been known to kill babies. I also would not recommend them as pets for children. Ferrets are my favorite pets, but you have to use common sense.

She took a liking to me and sat at my feet most of the night. She licked me a lot. She has been babied since birth and is a sweet dog.

I have heard the same SO many times. Pretty much the cliché statement by pit lovers. Doesn't mean I would ever trust one.

I am not a pit bull lover. Never owned one. But some can be sweet and docile.
I owned a German Shepherd some years ago. He was the sweetest most wonderful dog to us. But he bit a neighbor's child who was teasing him and sticking her leg in his gate. They are protective. German Shepherds used to have a bad reputation too. If I ever get another dog it would be a German Shepherd.

Sorry, Rob, but you are the one regurgitating cliches. Years ago it was Rottweilers, then it was Dobermans, then it was German Shepherds, now it's Pit Bulls. People used to be afraid of St. Bernards. It's always a good idea to be cautious around any animal you don't know, but singling out pit bulls as some loose cannon is just buying into media sensationalism and ignoring causality and basic dog behavior. Gary, IN was once demonized as the murder capital of the world, it doesn't mean I would never trust anyone from Gary, IN. Stop watching Nancy Grace. Seriously. 😉

I came to this forum to ask about DA but am reading about pit bull dogs here. I've looked online and there have been several human deaths by pit bull attacks already this year. I can't find any information on deaths by other type dog attacks.

I also read about the dogs on wikipedia. Does porkchopbob know what bull baiting is?

Here's the CDC report. Decide for yourself. I think I'd rather have a cocker spaniel.

Well, how 'bout it, porkchopbob. Are those statistics "regurgitating clichés"? The next highest total of death after Pit Bulls was Rottweiler's, and their total was only 59% of the pits.

Maybe the ultimately knowledgeable porkchopbob can supply us with some.

"People used to be afraid of St. Bernards."
I am afraid of those big monsters!
My sister and I were visiting her friends in New Orleans.
They had a very friendly and sweet St. Bernard. They decided to go for a walk
and I was left inside with the dog. Everything was fine, but the walkers had locked themselves out
and were knocking on the front door. I got up to let them in and the dog turned into Cujo and
stood in front of me growling and showing his teeth. I froze. The owners managed to get inside
and rescue me. I never want to see one of those monsters again!

Uh, from the report you cite:

"Although fatal attacks on humans
appear to be a breed-specific problem (pit bull-type
dogs and Rottweilers), other breeds may bite and
cause fatalities at higher rates. Because of difficulties
inherent in determining a dog’s breed with certainty,
enforcement of breed-specific ordinances raises con-
stitutional and practical issues. Fatal attacks represent
a small proportion of dog bite injuries to humans and,
therefore, should not be the primary factor driving
public policy concerning dangerous dogs. Many practi-
cal alternatives to breed-specific ordinances exist and
hold promise for prevention of dog bites. "

From the same report found that the most common factor, present in 87 percent of fatal dog attacks, was the absence of an able-bodied person to intervene. Another common factor was the owners’ failure to neuter their dogs.

I never said pit bulls weren't responsible for attacks, but you have to ask yourself - what is the causality of the attacks? They are the most abused animal in the U.S. As the abuse and neglect have risen, so have attacks. Pit bulls have more to fear from people than people do from pit bulls. Stop throwing out the baby with the bath water. There are millions of pit bulls out there that are perfectly fine. If you understand animal and human behavior, you would know that one breed of dog isn't magically wired for killing your babies. But it is important know dog and animal behavior if you have any pet. They are all animals. And if rottweilers are second, why aren't we concerned with those dogs? (they happen to be great dogs - any dog can be conditioned to guard a junkyard).

And for the record, someone got my family a Cocker Spaniel when I was a young kid. It had obviously been from a puppy mill. It would bite my feet when I would run inside because she thought it was a game. We immediately got rid of the dog.

You have not proven that pit bulls are not dangerous. Period.

I've proven (over and over again) that there are a lot of factors in any animal aggression and that any dog breed can be dangerous, especially if the owner is neglectful (like leaving your child home alone with several dogs). Most of the information I've posted you've ignored because you have already made up your mind. You haven't proven that you should "never trust a pit bull". At all.

So if you don't want a pit bull, don't get one. The dogs will be better off with someone else who understands animal behavior (also true of any dog). There are millions (MILLIONS!) of pit bulls in the U.S. that are not dangerous.

But here is something to ponder: of the 51 dogs seized from Michael Vick’s dog-fighting ring in 2007, over 30 of them have been rehabilitated and gone on to loving homes. Four of them have even become therapy dogs. Not every abused dog can be rehabilitated or saved and will need to be put down, it's true, but so many of these abused dogs deserve a second chance at a happy life. Remember, a lot of dog fighting rings specifically dump pit bulls that are not aggressive (bait dogs).

Also, Helen Keller had a pit bull.

I read that 64% of all mass shootings are committed by white males. I believe it is time we adopted a program to eradicate all white males.

gina talking about "dog language" when she's barely coherent in people talk.

LMFAO.

Well here's something you didn't know, when we get to the end of time eventually the animals will be able to speak to us in English or whatever language we speak in. People will be shocked that they actually know what you are saying about them and to them even now, they just cannot talk to you in your language.

Classic. Luv 'ya gina. Grin
