I rarely go to baseball games, maybe 1 every couple years. But there is usually somebody within earshot viciously heckling an opposing player. I also rarely go to basketball games, maybe 1 a year. There again, somewhere not too far away you will find some obnoxious fan (home or away) calling names and insulting players or a team and taunting surrounding fans. NFL games, oh boy. It's like some people go there to act like they are in high school again, to start fights and generally misbehave. Hell, go to a little league baseball game see the way some parents act. It's embarrassing.
I went to an A's game when Reggie Jackson was play for the Yankees. There was an old guy screaming every slur you could imagine...somewhere in the middle of the game Reggie hit a massive HR and the old white guy stomped out the the stadium huffing and puffing while we all laughed at him...
So yes its happened here in the Bay Area...this was in the mid 80's I would guess but racism is still alive here.
There is racism everywhere, not just in Boston. I'm from the area and this was a terrible thing and a shame. I didn't think that people still used the N word. It's one of the most vulgar words out there. Boston is a great sports town and the reputation for being racist is over blown. It's too bad that there are still idiots out there. Hey Wis608, it's sounds to me that you are a bit envious of the winning that goes on up here.

My experiences:
Black Hawks / Detroit Red Wings game. People screaming at me for rooting for the Wings.
Bulls / Pistons playoff game. I'm wearing a Detroit Tigers hat. People threw peanuts at me.
A few White Sox games. Saw a few small riots in the stands. Among people that were actually both fans of the Sox.
Been to probably over a hundred Cubs games.
Never seen an incident.
