TTB — Delaney & Bonnie

This is a really stupid topic but I’ve been kicking it around in my head so thought it write it down too.
folks like to talk about TTB and Mad Dogs & the Englishmen, and TTB play their tunes.
But to me Delany & Bonnie sound so much like their musical and vibe predecessor.
that’s it.

Interesting comparison. I disagree because I think D&B were much more soulful & had a richer pool of "& friends" talent.

Interesting idea for sure. I agree with what's been discussed. If you look at both bands you have a amazing a mixture of awesome musicians playing together to bring such great sound. I like to listen to each of these bands as they have so much to often to the listener.
That being said it takes a special bond to be able to perform at the level that each offer. In these days of reduced spending and the use of sampling, it's good to see that D&B and The TTB are just a search engine away from enjoying.

Derek mentioned Mad Dogs when the band was starting, but I agree with the similarities between TTB and D&B. They are not exactly alike, and for the most part TTB doesn't have rotating personnel in the same way D&B had. The musical styles are a little different - D&B had a more "rootsy" or soulful sound, TTB has the amazing virtuosity of Derek there permanently, shaping the music and leading the band (as opposed to EC and Duane doing short stints). They come from the same place, musically speaking.

I guess I was thinking D&B had both soul & rock roots w/Bonnie being an Ikette at one point. Don't see Susan in that mold.

Well, if Derek was a singing/guitar-slinging frontman.....

To me I’ve always thought Derek/Susan’s Soul Stew tour of ‘07/‘08 was closer to D&B than TTB is.

Yep this version really has DEREK in the band. The originial recording did not feature anyone actually named Derek!!

I know Susan and Derek made reference to D&B when they were doing Soul Stew Revival, they even covered D&B's "Comin' Home".
But TTB's lineup (full horns, backup singers) and the way they shift the spot light and arrangements is more similar to Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Mike Mattison or Alicia will take a tune the same way Rita Coolidge or Leon Russell would. It's still a mix of influences, and TTB has become their own unique, amazing thing.

@oldcoot: Soul Stew Revival was a tremendous band, I saw them at Wanee 2007. I wish there was some film of that tour. I need to look on youtube, I have never done a search.
That said, back to the subject of this thread: I don't think Delaney and Bonnie ever really got proper credit for their huge influence on the Americana and jam band scene. I mean, ask the average person on the street, even a fairly musically knowledgeable person, who Delaney and Bonnie are. Likely you'll get a big "HUH?"
