The Roadie by Kim Payne with Marc Vormittag came in the mail about a week ago. I didn’t know much about Kim Payne’s time in ABB family. So for me I really enjoyed the stories, some I knew and most I never heard before.

The book was written in short story segments and the parts I really liked was Kim’s time spent alone with Gregg, Dickey, Berry and the rest of the roadies especially his pal Mike Callahan.

If you enjoyed Red Dog’s book you’ll like this read.

Did anyone else here read this book?

Kim Payne got a song writing credit for Midnight Rider. Gregg was stuck on the words and Kim through out a line and Gregg used it. Later Kim pressed Gregg for a credit and Gregg agreed to do it.

Now when Midnight Rider makes some money Gregg gets 95% and Kim gets 5%.

I imagine he gets a royalty check regularly

Please, ask robertdee to ask Blackey about this and to report back, they are clearly two different people as established by robertdee.

Blackey is still a member here but right now he can only post in the Playpen.  The website took that action some weeks ago but Blackey isn't aware of why.  Whatever it was he apologises and has asked me to be more respectful of other's opinions,  especially about the last lineup of the ABB.

Blackey was banned completely in the fall of 2000 in an Email from Butch Trucks and was accused of being paid to create chaos by Dickey Betts when it was made public Dickey would not be welcomed back.

I got on here using my robertdee handle to try an let Butch and others that Blackey is not employed by Dickey and had not had an opportunity to speak to Dickey since 1995. But robertdee was told to leave too. Blackey tried his account a few months after Butch's tragic death and got on here. Then several weeks ago Blackey was banished to the Playpen so robertdee (me) tried my old account and surprisingly got on. But I'm being very careful not to offend anyone and respect those who take the position the last lineup was the best ABB lineup and Derek Trucks is the best guitar player that was a part of the ABB.

It's kind of like Superman and Clark Kent. Two completely different people according to Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen and perhaps they are.

But robertdee was told to leave too

Now we are discussing two people in the 3rd person lol - careful not to create too many more characters in case you lose track of who is real. You may want to come clean before any of the alternate egos takes hold.

Canadianmule worries and so do I.

Book sounds interesting and I look forward to it.

@canadianmule blackey and robertdee were told they are banned from this site by apparently Butch Trucks and blackey was accused of being an employee of Dickey Betts. Then robertdee was banned too by the Allman Brothers Band.  But this was TWENTY YEARS AGO THIS FALL!

After Butch Trucks died in 2017, blackey tried the site and got on. So it was confusing as to whether the banning actually occurred or if it was Butch telling Blackey the band wanted him gone. And yes there was tremendous tension between Butch and Dickey and Blackey, who was very disappointed when Jaimoe was replaced in 1980, was pushing for cooler heads and to eventually find a way to let Dickey come back.  You don't do that to an original band member. Butch's Email ( assuming it was actually him) was succinct.  Either Dickey was out or the band would break up. Either way Butch will not work with Dickey again.

Blackey had a nice relationship with Butch during the 1990s when he was posting regularly on line and answered many questions about the band. And Butch was a great drummer and his presence on EVERY Allman Brothers album was significant.  On practically every album Butch is the sole percussionist on at least one track. On the first album Jaimoe doesn't play on Whipping Post for example. Butch had forgotten that and when he disagreed suddenly he realized he was remembering the version on Fillmore East.

I'm actually not interested in discussing the drama in the band twenty years ago starting now. It has gotten me in trouble and at age 74 I want to love and respect everyone.  It took me awhile to warm to a band with no Dickey on top of Duane and Oakely long gone but no doubt the last lineup was a fantastic lineup.

I think reflecting on the history of the band ...the original lineup was the most creative and made the band famous. The last lineup was the longest lasting and more diverse with their setlists and the musicianship was impressive.

Without Duane's cocky rockstar confidence and energy and Gregg and Dickey's songs the band would have never made it. The last lineup took a band that was on it's last legs and turned the ABB into a concert powerhouse and finished the band's run very strong in 2014.

Also for those who missed the Chuck Lamar/Brothers and Sisters lineup, it was the most successful commercially and while so different than the originial, could be outstanding in concert. I remember seeing them in Nashville in 1973 and years later I heard Charlie Daniels comment on that show about how they just smoked it there in music city and how Chuck Leavell was incredible.

I'm impressed with all the lineups. I saw a couple hot shows with the 1981 lineup. That Mike Lawler keyboard guitar didn't fit and drumming wasn't as unique with David Toler instead of Jaimoe but Gregg, Dickey and Danny Toler were smoking on several songs. Dan Toler could do those double stroking fast jazz runs real good.

I want to express my friendship and respect to all those who post here and love the band. We share a kinship and love for the band.

I intend to love and respect all ABB fans. And if you find Derek Trucks is the best guitarist to have been in the band...then that is okay by me. Derek is certainly one of the all time greats when thinking about great guitarist be it Eddie Van Halen,  Clapton, Jeff Beck etc. Derek is absolutely in that top level.

Peace and love to all!

Now that you mention both names in the 3rd person, it is just getting weirder. Bizarre that you seem to believe anyone is fooled.

So how many user names have you had besides these two?

Look forward to reading the book. Not sure what possible tales there are that haven't been told but hope there are a few.

@lee

I tried to post the Facebook link here but got an error message regarding the link.  So, here are your ordering options:

1.  Go to Facebook and do a search for "The Roadie by Kim Payne".  The link will come up, I just tried it.

2.  Snail mail info:  Send a check for $22.00 + $5.00 shipping = $27.00 ("Orders outside of U.S. subject to actual shipping costs").

Make check out to Mark Vormittag (he is the co-author) and send to:  Midwest Media Consultants, P.O. Box 281, Round Lake Beach, Illinois 60073.

3.  Paypal link:  paypal.me/markvormittag
I've never ordered something through paypal that needed to be shipped so if you're using this option be sure that they ask for your shipping address.  Snail mail is probably the safest bet.

Copy and paste from the Facebook page:

A First Edition copy of “The Roadie” is currently available in paperback for: $22 plus $5 flat shipping fee in the continental U.S. Shipping outside the U.S. is subject to actual shipping costs. Payment accepted electronically through PayPal, or by U.S. check.
Please allow 7-10 days for processing and handling and up to 14 days for signed copies. Please allow 2-3 weeks for international shipping. Please include your telephone number and email address with your international order for Customs form application processing.
When placing an order with PayPal or by check, please be sure and indicate if you would like a signed copy.

I read this book last week. My good friend bought me a copy.  He worked with Kim in AL in the 90’s so I had heard a couple of the stories from him. Otherwise  there was a lot I hadn’t heard before, like say what it was like on their farm in Juliet, GA.  Hearing about the band from the roadies perspective is different than a biography & hits some more anecdotal type stuff.

I saw the Red Dog’s book is available here & bought it too. I had never read it & there of course is some overlap but not a ton.  Both oks are a collection of short stories.

The quality of the Roadie book itself is nice. Nice paper & a LOT bigger the Red Dog’s Book of Tails.

Love both books & may read em again! It’s a wonder any of those guys lived as long as they did.

I really enjoyed reading "The Roadie," by Kim Payne. It was great to hear about the things that went on behind the music back with the Allman Brothers in the early days. Kim really knows how to tell a story. I can only ponder what it would have been like in the Deep South back in the 60's and 70's, and especially in Macon Georgia at that time. I spent my early years on the Northside of Chicago, where we didn't have problems like the ones Kim describes in his many stories. Thank you Kim for sharing and also to Mark Vormittag for his contributions to this great read!
