Road Trip CD Selections

@robertdee Do you think you can possibly refrain from posting a 1959 movie trailer in a thread that is about road trip music selections?

@robslob I'm sorry. That was for Lee only. Apparently Lee is much younger than me ( born 1946) and I doubted he had heard of that 1959 film Anatomy Of A Murder which was filmed entirely in Michigan where he lives. I assumed others wouldn't look at that trailer. Sorry.Â

We're doing a few days in Atlantic City, a 3 1/2 hour drive. I brought the boombox and these CDs:
-The Zombies "Odyssey and Oracle"
-Zepp "Coda" deluxe - great extra tracks!
-Dave Brubeck at Carnegie Hall
-The Stones "Bigger Bang"
-Deep Purple "Abandon"
-the Dead "Mars Hotel"
-Tom Petty "Mojo"
-Hendrix CD 2 "Ladyland"
-SRV "Sky is Crying"
Â
Love the boombox!!

Just reading today makes 30 years since Shades of Two Worlds was released. I guess that would be a good road trip recording.Â
They quoted a 1991 interview with Butch who was very upbeat as bout Shades. Improvement over Seven Turns. Butch said it became clear they had a similar problem they had when they tried it again in 1978. Bad chemistry. Butch said as soon as we cut the piano player we took on in 1989 we got back to the feel and chemistry of the original band. Butch added that is the first time it feels this right since Duane and Berry died. Very similar to statements Butch often made over the years.Â
Interestingly this article said Allen Woody died of a heroin overdose! I had seen a drug problem hinted at but never saw that kind of statement.

Wait, I moved to Michigan? Nobody told me! 😉Â
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Regarding the sound systems in cars, I am surprised CD players aren't in cars anymore. Obviously you can use the latest technology these days. I imagine some people here recall 8 track players in cars. Before my time. Of course I recall cassette players. In fact, one of the only accidents I got into was when I left school one night and I rear ended this lady because I was preoccupied changing a tape.
Madonna's "Like A Virgin". 😛Â

@lee I had an 8 track installed in 1973. Wow suddenly you could listen to your favorite bands in you car and ditch top 40 radio.Â
Mine was stolen, ripped out of my car with a crowbar, window broken out with a rock, in the parking lot at a rock concert in Charlotte NC. Z Z Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Preston. Steely Dan was the headliner when I bought my tickets but they canceled. I seem to remember they announced they would not tour anymore. Maybe that was why Skunk Baxter moved to the Doobie Brothers!?

I think Seven Turns is a great album. It kind of put them back on the map if you will. It is totally different than Shades. I guess they thought Johnny just wasn't a good fit. He's still very talented and having met him once, a really nice guy. I agree Shades is more of a throwback to the original band but hey, they had Chuck for a while.
I'm surprised you of all people didn't know about Woody. I thought that was common knowledge. I think it happened in a hotel room in NYC. I met his dad Doug at The Big House Museum before it was as it is today. I don't think it was even a museum. You just showed up. I believe Doug passed away a few years ago. He was really nice. This had only been a few years since Woody's passing. He was in Atlanta for the Fox run. I didn't ask him about Woody, I didn't think it would have been appropriate. Doug was really nice, the stereotypical southern gentleman.

@lee I had read reports in the press about Woody's death that hinted at a drug overdose but nothing explicit until I saw that yesterday. Yes I remember Woody was found dead in a motel in Queens (New York City).Â
Eddy Shaver died of a heroin overdose about the same time. I think he was 36. Dickey helped Eddy learn to play and gave Eddy two guitars. S-335 that belonged to Duane Allman and an old Strat that Gregg traded Dickey for an old car Dickey had. Apparently back before they had any real money.Â
I too liked Seven Turns a lot. Good Clean Fun and the title track became ABB standards. Saw Johnny with the band several times in 1989 and 1990. Oddly Seven Turns out sold Shades though the band, at least Butch, thought it was a better album that Seven Turns.Â
I got to speak with Johnny at a Dickey Betts Band show at a club in North Carolina in 1988. He asked me if I had some cocaine:). Someone led him to the bar where I was standing so I spoke first then discovered he is blind.Â
While reading Gregg's book I discovered Gregg never thought Johnny fit the band either. Johnny and Warren came into the ABB via Dickey's band. It was there Warren got aquatinted with Matt Abts.

@lee Eddy Shaver died of a heroin overdose 4 months after Allen Woody on December 31st, 2000. He was 36.Â
Here is Eddy with the old 1955 Strat he was given by Dickey who got it from Gregg for an old car. Apparently back when they didn't have much money. Eddy is playing at a big redneck hoedown and playing some good slide guitar on the second break!!Â

ARS - Champagne Jam
ABB - Enlightened Rogues

Good mix....love the deep stuff. I made a mix of DP Morse era only, live material. Really enjoy it. Also I took selections from the released deluxe editions of LZ and made a nice mix of that too. Nothing earth shattering from those, but some cool things here and there no doubt.
