High hopes for Genius: Aretha

Love they are doing it episodic rather than the tired bio-pic. The idea of David Cross as Jerry Wexler is inspired, but even more I love Cynthia Erivo as ARETHA.

A quick check on imdb lists King Curtis, Rick Hall, Pete Carr, and a few other Muscle Schoals legends, and I saw a freeze frame that featured Tom Dowd. They did their homework.

Porkchopbob I think it was 1966 or 67 I was at a soul review that featured several acts and I had the chance to be introduced to Otis Redding and I ask Otis what he thought of Aretha Franklin covering his song Respect? Otis smiled and said something like " Oh man she took that song and knocked it out of the park. I've made more money off her version than anything before. So I ain't complaining at all. I guess that is hers now but I'm the writer".

It reminded me later of what Bob Dylan said when a music reporter asked him if he was bothered by what Jimi Hendrix did to his song All Along The Watchtower? Bob said" That is not my song man that is Jimi's song. I only wrote it!".

I guess Dylan didnt have a beef with Jimi Hendrix's take on it.
