Do you find….
Do you find as you have gotten older you listen to more mellow music? I seem to be listening to more America, Loggins and Mesina and other groups like them. They have always been listened to but now I listen to them more and more.
I really never could get into either America or Loggins and Messina, and that remains true in my advanced age. If I want something mellow I'll often reach for a female artist, maybe Susan Tedeschi, Joni Mitchell, Amy Winehouse, Carolyn Wonderland. Lately I'm really getting into Sierra Ferrell on YouTube although I don't own anything quite yet. She's amazing. Molly Tuttle is great, too.
My favorite America song is Lonely People.
And I like to go back to the 1940's the decade in which I was born and play stuff I remember my folks playing when I was a kid. Jo Stafford was a female they liked.
And Edyth Wright. You're A Sweetheart!
@robslob By the way. A younger couple I hear about from a cousin traveled to Virginia to see TTB at Floyd Fest and they weren't there.
Susan was taken to the hospital needing surgery on her appendix. Hope all is well now. She is some talent both vocally and on guitar.
@robertdee: Get Well Susan!!!
@robslob I found this just now. They are missing two festivals.
It sounds routine and I certainly wish her a speedy recovery ❤️
I'm actually going the other way. In my 20's America, Seals & Crofts, Loggings & Messina. The a few years later CSN, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield. More time, then Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Doobie Brothers. Today, at 71, almost everthing I listen to has to be plugged in. But not to the point of metal or punk. I like to listen to the different instruments and how the arrangements flow. (trading guitar lines, multiple keyboards, bass line, etc).
I've never gotten into those 70s AM radio bands much, but I've always regularly listened to pretty mellow music. Especially while I work. Doesn't mean unplugged necessarily. I've been listening to a lot of Khruangbin, Skinshape, Cymande, Vulfpek, lately. And if I need something really mellow I'll dial up some Mills Brothers. I'm also on Bill Evans kick lately.
@porkchopbob I remember seeing Dean Martin on Larry King years ago and Dean said his biggest influence is one of the singers in the Mills Brothers. Unfortunately I can't remember which one but Dean said when he sings that's who he is thinking about.
Here is Dean Martin and John Wayne singing together. When I saw this I was surprised how well the Duke sounded like a Frank Sinatra type crooner.

I believe it was Harry Mills
@porkchopbob Khruangbin! I've heard this band several times while driving my wife's car - the one with satellite radio! Truth - I look at the screen for the name of the band - then try to remember it when I get back home to Google more info. While hoping not to insult anyone, I wonder exactly what the hell kinda name this is for a band? I still can't spell Lynnyrd freakin' Skynnard! Maybe now I can track these guys down. I do enjoy their sound! Thanks for the post!
@porkchopbob Yes I think Harry Mills is right.
I was surprised when Dean told Larry King that. I figured he may credit Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby.
Back when 78 rpm records were still being produced I was hearing a song on the radio I liked as a 7 year old. My mother eventually bought it for me at Woolworths and it was on the Capitol lable by Dean Martin. " That's Amore". I think it was 1953.
Those 78's were almost as big as a 33 1/3 rpm album.
The 45 rpm with the big hole came out about 1955 or so.
I enjoyed those songs by the Mills Brothers on Dean's show. They not only could sing but had a nice uplifting persona about themselves.
I remember them on various variety TV shows in the 1950's.
The 1950's when half of the shows on network TV were westerns and in black and white, lots of ads for cigarettes including " Camels!! The cigarette more doctors smoke" and Colgate toothpaste was called Colgate Dental Cream.
