Count me in as another who did not enjoy Johnny Neels playing with The ABB. I mean the guy obviously has chops but we all know it takes a lot more than just chops to sound good with The Brothers.
When Johnny would solo he sounded as if he was being electrocuted. :freaked:Not good to my ears.
His sound was not a good fit at all with The ABB. I was very happy when I learned Gregg was handling all the keyboard duties again...That sweet B-3 is all you need to provide a nice layer of colour just under the guitars.
Thanks so much to TaperRob for 3/18/04... I can't believe how good this show is! ...and to think this was opening night...Incredible!
Peace
Didn't Gregg also used to play "Gonna Move" during his solo gigs? Seems like I've heard him sing it before.
Yeah, and was Bruce Hornsby on it too, and someone was playing sax, can't remember though.
That Crested Butte show was the Bomb.
Broadcasted live on MTV I think.
I love that MTV Unplugged show, I used to have that on a VHS tape with a special VH1 did about the same time on the ABB Seven Turns album, followed by a show from Crested Butte, all around that same time, I guess 1991. Wish I could find that sucker.
😆 Benjamin!
Now I am thinking about this Paul Pena CD, and I don't have it here because it was one of the ones I let someone borrow and it hasn't been returned, I will have to get it again.
Johhny Neel was great on Seven Turns. I thought he added alot to the music. His twinkling of the ivories on the MTV Unplugged version of Seven Turns is one of the things that makes that my fav rendition of that classic tune. Just great stuff.
Overall though, Johnny did not do it for me with the ABB. The 1989 tapes have got Johnny doing some extended synthesizer solos (including during Whipping Post). His solo on Jessica just didn't cut it...too weird for me. By 1990, the synths were gone, but his playing still didn't fit for me.
Of course, Chuck L is the one & only piano player for the ABB in my book. The 2001 tapes w/Chuck are just wonderful. Here's to hoping that he sits in this year (Atlanta?)....

Charlesinator,
Gonna Move is a Paul Pena tune, I believe, and was covered by Les Dudek on either Gypsy Ride or Ghost Town Parade. I couldn't believe it the first time I heard Derek play it-I hadn't heard that tune in almost 25 years.
BTW, as I posted previously, Les's first CD, Les Dudek, has been just reissued on Wounded Bird records. It is a label that takes requests for reissues-you can e-mail them and they will take certain titles under consideration. I had e-mailed tham requesting that they reissue all of Les's LPs on Columbia (including the DFK Band) and they sent me an e-mail back saying they were reissuing his first solo LP on CD. How's that for service?
It is one of the great guitar records of all time. His slide playing is still the closest I have heard to Duane's for tone, intonation, and overall feel-he wasn't copping Duane's riiffs but he sure was invoking his spirit.
I highly recommend this disc for any ABB fan or just any fan of American music. It is great. Sounds like it was remastered too-it sounds better than the Japanese import I found about 15 years ago.
You can pick it up at www.cheap-cds.com for $8.99 + shipping. It'll be one of the best buys you ever make. Trust me on this one-you'll feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up when you hear Les ripping his slide on Sad Clown or Take The Time.
Sorry. It's just a GREAT record.
Pam's faster than I am...with song writing credits that is.
Charlesinator, Gonna Move is a Paul Pena song. It was first recorded by him in 1973, (I think). I know Jerry Garcia played pedal steel on that same first album of his, but I don't recall what song Jerry was on, Merl Saunders is on there too I think.
He also wrote the song "Jet Airliner" made famous by the Steve Miller Band.
Previous link didn't work, so I'll just post the (paraphrased) messages....
......heard that the ABB are loking to tour some parts of Europe in the early fall and having Dereks Band to open.
.....solid! also heard that since Warren will be busy with Phil and friends, that Mr. Dickey Betts will join the cast.
Probably just April fools b.s., but Dickey rejoining the band is something I'd like to see.....
Thanks Brofan. How the heck are you doing? It sure is good to see you in good spirits and posting often.

"I'm going to move away from here. You can find me if ya wanna go there."
What do you mean "get to return?" How 'bout already started, Buppalo. Also Randy, I wanted to thank you for the dtb in Gadsden. Have been listening to it often driving the wife and kid crazy with it. My son is coming around, but the old lady is holding her ground. Man I especially like the tune Gonna Move Away From Here. Is that an old Beach Music song? Jim Benjamin? Anybody? I seem to have heard that one before. Anyway my son and I were singing harmony on it the other day. Peace y'all.

Charlesinator,
You are right. Wayne is THE best.
And you're not so bad yourself-you're one of the most generous GBers too.
In light of happened yesterday in Iraq with once again Americans bodies being dragged through the streets and hanged on bridges and in light of all the service men and women serving around the world, I have posted a link below of a charitable foundation of which I am a member, the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation. It is an all volunteer foundation, all of the proceeds go to the families. Basically, they provide scholarships to children who's parents are killed in the line of duty. They also provide relief for medical expenses if there is a disability in the family. These families are making the ultimate sacrifice for us. Their husbands and wives are the tip of the spear and we must be the shield that protects them. Please take a look at the foundation. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Damn, Jim B.! Come to Alabama in October.
We got it all!!
And cheer up Chris! You get to return to your first love any day now. Briggs and Stratton?
charlestinator, I agree with you about the deep end video. There's some good moments and some insight into the Mule but I think Mike Gordon likes seeing himself in his own movies a bit too much. I thought it would be more a tribute to Woody and it ended being Mike babbling about God know what most of the time.
Neel is great. I think Blue Floyd really got under alot of peoples radar a few years back. Marc Ford, Berry Oakley Jr on bass, Woody on guitar, Matt Abts and Johhny Neel playing all Pink Floyd sets in small clubs . It was amazing. It surprises me how many people never heard of it. Woody and Johnny and the rest hung out in the bar after the show at the bottom line, another defunct or soon to be NYC club. It was so cool. I miss those small shows. Anyone remember the Mule at Irving Plaza ? 97-00 or so. Always right in the middle of the beacon run. I remember Jack Pearson, Derek, Oteil, Duane Betts , Bernie Worrell all jamming into the early hours with Warren and of course Woody shaking the building with that bass.
Tobacco Road , now that place closing was a real shame. Marc Ford, Derek, Robert Randolph, Garth Hudson , Bernie Worrell, Audely Freed, Mike Farris, the Radiators after their outdoor show got rained out. Post beacon jams...... It will be missed. The Wetlands still gets mentioned but TR was better. No political agendas, and the beer was cheap and cold ! Pretty soon it seems we'll only be able to see shows in sterile clear channel venues, unfortuntatly.
hello beautiful Peacheads...Happy Birthday El!... thanks to everyone for all the wonderful reviews of the Beacon run....still kicking myself for turning down Jody-girls incredible saturday night tix offer....but as the fates would allow..saturday night was meant for Jody....love you Jody..I cant tell ya'll how it gladdened my heart to hear of you, Greg Potter and Lee Roy walking into eachother on my sidewalks of NY... 3 of my favorite people in this mean old world...I am so looking foward to april 25 and Lee Roy's show at the SRJ/Live Oak FLA....sunday shows are always so pretty....way down on the Suwanne River/Music Park..the amphitheatre there is more like a cathedral in a forested glade...and the river..like the Brothers....is legendary. Johnny Neel...more power to him! are ya'll kidding me? I saw a great post by a young lady named Heather requesting a Blue Floyd show for her Daddy's Easter basket....brought tears of joy to my eyes..... Among my favorite memories are great concert nights....Debbie, you remember that Blue Floyd concert? ...what a big time we had.....So sad reading about your friend's Mom..Please send him our prayers and love....Johnny was ferocious that night..tore up the keys like nobodys business...Berry Oakley...right in the middle of all the pink stuff, Berry stepped up and played the meanest Mountain Jam....a solo, mind you, just Berry on bass....Blew the room away...and AW...in all the shows Id seen AW with the Brothers & the Mule..this was the highlight..He played the most beautiful mandolin, all night long....this incredible groove...We were at this little club, at the edge of the Glades...at least, what used to be the Everglades....His last show. If there is a tape of that show out there..that would be the one to put in that Easter basket....I would love a copy of that my damned self...Peaches ya'll..be good..Ca
Heh...I kinda liked that blizzard of '03. Stranded in a cool hotel with a killer menu, couldn't make it back to NY for work and I didn't have to shovel!
