a friend of mine just laid some Blackfoot on me, looking forward to listening to that on the way home....
As a kid growing up in Indianapolis, Indiana, the southern rock thing was not lost on me and my friends. We were into ABB, MTB, CDB, LS, Outlaws, etc., and some of my more learned friends were into Sea Level. I was familiar with Wet Willie and Keep On Smilin', but didn't realize they were a Capricorn band until much later. So, as far as I'm concerned, southern rock, as far as a geographical description goes, was pretty far reaching.
Reminder of the good thing happening in Nashville the 24th
We will be doing a fundraiser to lend a hand to Jimmy and Minni Nalls and their family. As most everyone receiving this email knows, Jimmy has had a long hard bout with Parkinson's Disease. He has had some pretty good days physically over the last 6 or 8 months but there are still not some so good days as might be expected.
Harder for the family at this point, some 12 years into the ordeal, is that the financial end never really lets up. We have all heard stories about how expensive medicine and treatments and surgeries are in today's world.. well Jimmy & Minni has had a dozen years of this mess and have soldiered on bravely. Jimmy has been producing some tracks on his friend Alan and had played some guitar on some demos and is doing all he can. Minni has been the rock through this thing and she does more than everything than needs to get done.. she is a Saint.
All that being said, the debt load is overwhelming..credit cards, home loans, doctor bills, prescriptions, physical therapy... the whole shebangee..its maxed out.... SO.. we are doing what we can to help a Brother out..
Which brings me to you.. we would like you, Jimmy's extended family of friends, to do two or three things for us:
1) forward this email to as many people(friends and music lovers worldwide) as you think it would be appropriate to { Jimmy's one page/bio is attached to this email}
2)Come to Douglas Corner on Monday Sept 24th to see Jimmy and his pals making some beautiful noise.. Jiimy will be sitting in on guitar with as many of the sets as he feels up to
3) If you cannot make it to the gig on Monday Sept 24th, please consider sending whatever size donation you are comfortable with to the Recovery Fund address below.
We can't Thank You enough for all the Love and Support that Jimmy has received over the years and for the enormous generosity the Jammin 4 Jimmy event has raised over The Nalls Family over the previous years. Thank You with all Sincerity !
Here is the lineup as of now.

I've always felt that the Butterfield Blues Band and Santana had a lot more in common with the Allman Brothers than Molly Hatchett and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Heck, even the Grateful Dead had a lot more common ground with the ABB than most "Southern Rock" bands, which is probably why the ABB and the Dead used to play together so often.
Of course, that's just my opinion...
...I'm with Paulann..all good times for me...

I think Lynyrd Skynyrd was the ultimate 'southern rock" band.
Actually....
I recall hearing the term Southern Rock in about 1976. It referred to the whole Capricorn Record deal. The radio stations referred to southern rock as anything out of the South, but locally bands like Marshall Tucker and Wet Willie defined the term more so than the ABB. But I dont know what the Yankees referred to as southern rock back in the day; perhaps Marshall Tucker and Wet Willie were not as popular out of the South as LS....
Marshall Tucker IMO was actually the most Southern Rock band out there. That band defined the groove and feel of Southern Rock, far more so than LS or the ABB.
Another band that was labeled southern rock far more often than the ABB was the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Again, they had that whole feel down pat.
I agree with Rusty and Brent; the ABB in its early day was a blues band. Southern rock bands did not and do not infuse jazz the way the ABB did.
My vote for the top Southern Rock band title would go to Marshall Tucker.
When people say, "southern rock", they mean Lynyrd Skynnyrd. I've said that for some time now.
The Allman Brothers early stuff sounded more psychedelic to me - more like Cream and other stuff of the period.
My usual rant - rock and roll IS southern. "Southern rock" is a redundant term. It's like saying, " Chinese egg roll".
There have been many adaptations and subsequent formats, but rock and roll was born out of Delta Blues. Like Muddy said, "the blues had a baby and they named it rock and roll".
Allman Brothers are the definition of a good time, good music and good friends gettin' together for all of it.
least that's what I think.
IMO....Skynyrd is the definition of Southern Rock. And I don't mean that as a slam. I love LS.
Dickey and Gregg always referred to the band as a "blues band".

...Not the first time a radio station has referred to The ABB that way BLD. I guess they just aren't astute enough to call them anything else...
I have always been glad The ABB - past or present - despised them being labeled "Southern Rock" as much as we do. If I was on the radio, what I would probably say is this: The Allman Brothers Band have always been the definition of great music whether it be Blues, Rock or Jazz from the North, South or any place in between...The Allman Brothers Band has been an American Institution for the past 38 years and counting.... "
That's a bit more astute, descriptive and true than simply saying "Southern Rock" I think...
Just heard on newsradio 88 - NY - the Allman Bros. are the definition of southern rock -
Happy Birthday TattooNeil! Is it 50 this year?

Hey Peachies...about September 11..How cool our local Fire and Police Depts are..
The McFamily has been working our butts off making a go of our little car lot....Not much , but the CI property is unreal..less than 2 city blocks from where the banks of the enchanting Myakka kisses Tippiecanoe Bay, exact spot where Jr ,Heather and I spent many a happy day fishing one of the best kept secret spots in all of FLA. ..so we love it..
Heres the thing...we were able to buy a used work trailer left over after the flurry from Hurricane Charley and get Grandfathered in what would have been a million $ deal, our cost pennies on the $.
Another plus that pushed us to move was the Fire House across the street.... El Jobean is just a flashing signal in a sea of traffic headed to the Beaches and Sarasota.
September 11, the McFamily was out there , trying to spruce the place up, paint brushes in hand.
Now here it is THEIR day.....Yet, off-duty Firemen, start showing up, and before you can say AMERICA, and shake a paint brush at 'em, the place is sparkling under our high flying Old Glory.
When I asked why their flag was not at half-mast, they replied we will never be defeated by a few straggly terrorists..I thought that was strong..and GB worthy.
Anyway...sorting through a mass of music, found another gem, ABB video 9/23/70..really made my day... not sure who may have sent it. Also some goodies from Woody, and I thank you.
Hey Mitch...I roll down Edgewater every day on my way to work..If you saw it now, it would blow your mind! nearly 100 % rebuilt and thriving again....Sure was devastated 3 years ago....Amazing Grace.
Lana, your home sounds beautiful and inviting...welcome back to you and Rowland...
 Lib! it would do us all good to see things through your eyes.....You are BEAUTIFUL!
and because I love saving the best for last.. Our favorite Smiling Irishman and the ever lovely Phyll! xoxoxCa
The new Outlaws music on youtube and available to stream on their website sounds wonderful. Classic harmonies and great guitar. Give it a listen. Sorry Hughie didn't live to see it get released...
