Actually....
I recall hearing the term Southern Rock in about 1976. It referred to the whole Capricorn Record deal. The radio stations referred to southern rock as anything out of the South, but locally bands like Marshall Tucker and Wet Willie defined the term more so than the ABB. But I dont know what the Yankees referred to as southern rock back in the day; perhaps Marshall Tucker and Wet Willie were not as popular out of the South as LS....
Marshall Tucker IMO was actually the most Southern Rock band out there. That band defined the groove and feel of Southern Rock, far more so than LS or the ABB.
Another band that was labeled southern rock far more often than the ABB was the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Again, they had that whole feel down pat.
I agree with Rusty and Brent; the ABB in its early day was a blues band. Southern rock bands did not and do not infuse jazz the way the ABB did.
My vote for the top Southern Rock band title would go to Marshall Tucker.
