[Sticky] Peachy Road Trips

I'll kick things off by sharing Michael Maher's (EZM) account of his Excellent Summer Vacation in 2002:

@lana:Â That is QUITE the trip Lana, and I certainly can't come close to that!
Here's some of mine: ABB two nights at Wanee Festival, 2007. The band was just on FIRE both nights, and fortunately I have it all documented with Instant Lives. They set the tone RIGHT out of the gate the first night with an astonishingly burning Les Brers in A Minor.
ABB Daytona Beach 2002 with my ex-girlfriend. Of course Duane and Gregg spent their teens in Daytona after Mama A moved them there from Nashville, so lots of history, lots of old buddies there to see Gregg. I honestly have NEVER in my life seen that many FALLING DOWN DRUNK people in the same room at the same time. Shirlee and I were on the alert for anyone who might fall on us in our seats as they walked by. ABB was on point as usual.
ABB, The Beacon Theatre, 2002, two nights. Really glad I made the Beacon run just this one time. They were doing a short, maybe 20 or 25 minute, set of Soul music with Gregg of course singing, the GA & Friends horn section on board. It was GREAT. Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, etc.
The only other time I traveled away from home to see ABB was 1999, The Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas. ABB was NEVER bad, but this would have to go down as a very perfunctory performance. Dickey was close to being booted, and they just lacked any kind of inspiration.

Probably my longest road trips were quite a number of times to the shows at Red Rocks. Back then the band stayed at the Denver Marriott West and it was headquarters for the ABB faithful to locate. Got to meet a large number of Blue Site folks there! The venue was superb as was the vibe. Had some nice chats with band members at the hotel too.
Amended: My brain just kicked in, the longest by far was traveling to Pittsburgh for BoboFest. What a phenomenal experience that was on so many levels. The actual performance was mediocre by band standards but meeting Bob in person and so many others was the experience of a lifetime!
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

Was that 2002 tour the one labeled "Beach to Peach"? I have a shirt from that summer around here, and went to the Charlotte, Raleigh & Virginia Beach shows that summer. Â
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

Hey Lee, the "Beach to Peach" run was in 2001. 8/2/2001 Virginia Beach, 8/3/2001 Raleigh, 8/4/2001 Charlotte and 8/5/2001 Atlanta. A couple of things immediately come to mind when I think of it.Â
Scotty Sachs flew in from Long Beach to Virginia Beach for the shows and did something very cool. Before his flight out he surfed in the Pacific. When he arrived he surfed in the Atlantic. Surfed two oceans in one day. 🙂Â
Ever wonder how EasyMichael got his nickname? We met for the first time in Virginia Beach. Without introduction I immediately knew he was "Michael from Richmond". I think he only planned on going to that one show, but we lured him out on the road with an invitation to stay at our house, maybe a ticket or two and passes. It was ... easy. 🙂
The wonderful folks at Walnut Creek (Raleigh) heard about the "Beach to Peach" nickname and did something unbelievably cool for us in the Plaza area. They hauled in a ton of sand, fenced an area off, put up beach chairs and umbrellas, provided soft drinks/water in coolers, and put up a sign calling it the "VIPeach Area", where only Peach Corps members were allowed. Such fun!Â
Take care and know that you are loved ...Â

No ABB road trips for me (I was late to the party as usual) but I did roady for three Dead shows at Red Rocks in 1983; So Cal to Colorado. Â After the shows (hard to beat early Red Rocks September evenings), spent a few days hiking in Estes Park, visited a friend at CU (the shower was worth a million bucks!) and then drove home through NM, AZ, and home.
Â
Here's to more road trips for us all. Â Hard to beat being on the open highway or back road enjoying all things music!
