Mistaken for AI Before There Was AI
Topic starter
These days it's not uncommon for people to wonder whether a personality they interact with across websites and emails is real. Scammers and marketers feed targeted data into AI tools to make their language sound friendly and engaging. But 25 years ago that type of speculation was pretty much nonexistent.
So imagine my surprise in 2001 when, during a run of ABB / Phil Lesh & Friends shows from Virginia Beach to Raleigh to Charlotte, someone was astonished ... to meet me? What?
I'd gone to the production office to ask Bert a question. He was with a member of the PL&F team and introduced me as Lana with the web site. The guy looked at me in shock. "Wait, she's Lana? There's a real Lana? I thought she was just a hot marketing commodity you made up."
The two men shared a laugh, while I stood there not knowing what to say. I really could have used an AI tool to come up with something friendly and engaging.
