The main pretext Republican senators have offered for leaving open the Supreme Court seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia is that the next president, not Barack Obama, should be the one to fill it.

But now that his party’s nominee, Donald Trump, seems headed for a loss in November, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) appears to be changing his tune ― and may be signaling that more unprecedented obstruction is on the horizon if Hillary Clinton wins the White House.

“I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up. I promise you,” McCain said Monday, according to CNN.

When Trump was trashing McCain, he didn't have the balls to dismiss Trump on the spot. He's truly morphed into just one of the good old boys playing the self preservation game.

And all of the other obstructionists should hit the bricks too. They've blocked Obama for 8 years for the most part. I guess they figure their constituents won't mind another 4 or 8 years? Throw all of their sorry asses out. They are elected and paid to do the peoples' work, and they clearly aren't doing that.

Constitutionalism matters. No matter where they stand on other issue sor either candidate, most Republicans believe in the Constitution and will not go along with seeing our rights taken away.

Nah, the only believe in the parts of the constitution they want to believe in. The whole freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion they are not so fond of.

No, if they did, they would approve a SCOTUS nomination.

Oh they will. Hearings will start around November 9th or 10th when the Republicans realize that they lost both the presidency and the senate majority. It might be the fastest confirmation in history once they actually start.

They kept winning elections. If the Democrats want an easy road, totally unchecked, start winning more!

That's a fools point of view. The system was not designed to have the Senate outright refuse to consider a nominee and leave the court short a justice for months or years on end. It was designed for the Senate to consider nominees and approve them or not, and if not then the executive branch would have to nominate someone else. What the senate is doing now, by refusing to even hold hearings on a nominee that is in front of them, is a gross dereliction of duty.

And even when one party has a majority the other can and will still do everything in their power hold things up, as we have seen in the past. Obstruction is their weapon of choice, rather than having a debate and convincing their fellow Senators which way to vote (which is sounds like you should be a fan of by your "start winning more" comment, i.e. let them vote and see where the chips call). Obstruction also keeps them from having to go on record with a vote against a qualified nominee and then having to defend doing so to their constituents.

We've heard a lot about GOP obstruction over the last eight years (massive understatement). If more people shared your view it seems as if the GOP would be punished at the ballot box for their "dereliction" The exact opposite has come to pass. Why do you reckon that is?

I dunno?, perhaps gerrymandering?.

And a lot of voters out there voting for the likes of someone like Trump. I believe alloak refers to them as the low info voters.

Congress has had an approval rating of under 20% for years now, yet incumbents get re-elected time and time again...to the tune of over 90% of incumbents getting reelected in the last several cycles regardless of party affiliation. Why do you reckon that is?

Trump may be the worst POTUS candidate of my lifetime, but he's right on congressional term limits.
