"My Body, My Choice" - Mask Edition
I started this thread so that the other one wouldn't get hijacked...
It seems like we are a long way into this for anyone to not know that your mask is not protecting you, it is hopefully protecting others, to some extent. How much may be in debate, but open nostrils vs. covered nostrils seems to make some sense.
The answer to the "My Body, My Choice" comparison would only come into play if you contracted the coronavirus through an unwanted lack of social distancing on someone else's part and you then had to choose whether or not to be treated for covid-19.
The obviously appropriate comparison is "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service". It may or not be proven that anytime someone wears bare feet inside a restaurant someone could get sick, but it seems like a reasonable and decent thing to not have bare feet and food happening together. Same thing with masks. I know you can debate their efficacy all day, but really it is just a thing that decent members of society should be doing right now because it might help.
Also, don't let it bother you too much that you forfeited your sacred liberty to the shirt and shoes communists decades ago.
I've said here before (was agreed with by most) that I wear the mask to show support for the medical staffs, waitresses, and grocery store workers. I feel that any layer of filtration does some good. Personally, seeing others wearing the mask (while in a grocery store etc.) DOES make me feel a little more at ease than walking past a person who chooses not to wear one. In the grand scheme of things, the mask may be of less use than a screen door on a submarine - but it shows that we (participants) are taking the matter seriously. When this is all over, we can stage a huge mask-burning party at the first TTB or Mule show! 😉
Let me start off by stating that I am "Pro-Choice" but see the hypocrisy in that position while feeling somewhat obligated to write I believe the difference in the two stances is where life begins. Some firmly believe that abortion is taking a human life, others do not. I believe it does, so in my line of sight to stand and yell "My body, my choice" when in my opinion you are ending a life by doing so puts you right in the same line....My decision to not wear a mask, can possibly make others sick, while a woman's stance can end a life.
Your call. I won't tell you not to have an abortion if don't tell me to wear a mask.
A lot of people either forgot or never knew that a major purpose for masks and stay-at-home orders was because Health Care providers simply couldn't handle the huge numbers of cases that they were treating. It was as much for them as it was for the public's health.
And the same people seemed to think "Liberty" means "I get to do absolutely whatever I want", as if they had never seen a closed public park. If anyone wants to see what "entitlement" means in the USA, this month has provided far too many examples.
And all those damned Stop signs! How dare anybody tell me how to drive!
And all those damned Stop signs! How dare anybody tell me how to drive!
My car, my choice.
How dare they limit my freedom!
My decision to not wear a mask, can possibly make others sick...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You admit that you are aware of of this while choosing to knowingly endanger the people who may have to be near you in the name of freedom? And the hypocrisy of abortion supporters, including yourself, is a contributing factor to the no-mask decision?
The best definition of freedom I heard was the ability to stretch your arms out as far as you can without hitting your neighbor in the face.
so - if I choose to ski without a helmet, crash, and get a concussion that could have been prevented, I'm the one paying for that decision. My life, my head, my concussion, MYOB. If I ski out of control and hit someone (whether I'm wearing a helmet or not), I have affected someone else's life because of my decision. So - telling me to ski in control is not impinging upon my freedom because it's affecting someone else. (I wear a helmet when I ski)
Masks protect the person wearing them, but they protect the other people in the area more by catching and limiting droplets that leave your mouth / nose. We have learned that asymptomatic people can have Covid and they can be infectious (I have seen it).
For all I know, I may be an asymptomatic carrier, which means that when I go to the grocery store today I can infect the cashier or other people there. Every person infected can then infect someone else, a health care provider, etc.
I don't think that I have the right to do that, especially if by doing something fairly simple (and inconvenient) like wearing a mask I can help prevent infecting others.
None of us has the right to adversely affect other people's health
I think a good analogy is a seat belt. Sure, it increases your chances of surviving a crash which is great for you, but it also keeps your body from flying into someone else's wind shield or ending up in a hospital ER.

True to the extent that insurance rates don't rise due to your poor health decisions.
I know - looking at it through the eyes of insurance there are no truly independent decisions in that everything we do will affect someone else's rates to a small degree
And all those damned Stop signs! How dare anybody tell me how to drive!
My car, my choice.

So this argument only applies to abortion?
All I can say is that it's sad that with > 1 million cases and over 100,000 deaths in the USA, that this is even an issue or a conversation piece about wearing a mask. And this is a singular issue.
If I infected someone because I didn't wear a mask, I'd have a horrible time living with the guilt.
I guess others have the antibody for caring about thy fellow man.

Yes, but if you want to risk your body by not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle or even committing suicide, you should be able to make that choice as far as I'm concerned. But those choices won't make others sick. It is completely different. The mask is to protect other people from you, not to protect you from them.
Anyone who has read up on the subject should know the mask is to protect others from what you may be spewing from orifices, not the inverse. You don't want to wear a mask? Ok cool, but stay home and stay AT LEAST 6 feet from anyone else in public spaces. If you only care about you, that's fine but stay in your own space and stay away from people who feel any sense of empathy for their fellow humans. I am an essential worker according to my employer and state Gov't, so when doing essential work that requires me to be close to other people or I'm going to buy food, I'm masked, not because I want to be but because I care about other essential workers and humanity in general(Unless you are a white supremacist).
If you don't want to wear a mask for whatever reason, keep your distance from other folks when making essential trips. As I told a maskless, crusty turd burglar at the store last week, "Pandemic or not, I don't want to feel your breath on my neck while I pay for my stuff."
The obviously appropriate comparison is "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service"
How about "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Dice"
Sorry, sometimes it's good to lighten things up.
My decision to not wear a mask, can possibly make others sick...

"Knowingly"?..or "Possibly"?..I used possibly and you inserted knowingly. In case you are not aware, two entirely different thought processes.
I started this thread so that the other one wouldn't get hijacked...
My apologies for taking it sideways...
...don't tell me to wear a mask...
Where I live, I cannot enter ANY open business without wearing a mask. Signs posted everywhere.
I'm happy to comply.

I am not sure that a virus takes people's thought processes into consideration when moving from person to person.
I say, "WHEN you infect someone, you don't care."
You say, "IF I infect someone, I don't care."
Not sure how the ethics or the outcomes for bystanders are any different.
How is the reasoning for wearing a mask different from the reasoning for not being allowed to smoke in a cafe or theater?
Most people don't have an issue complying with going outside to smoke - if you don't want to wear a mask, please just keep a distance. I will do the same.

X2
The outcomes are no different, and the outcomes don't parse vocabulary differntiation. The virus is deadly or potentially deadly. Isn't that all matters? For goodness sakes, we should all respect the next person at this point. Wear a mask. Folks, you wouldn't want someone infecting you or your family regardless of word choice.
LA health guidelines on proper use of a mask. If you believe that the public is following this I have a bridge to sell you. One day this will all be seen as the modern equivalent of telling kids to hide under their desks to stay safe during a nuclear strike.
Wash your cloth face covering frequently, ideally after each use, or at least daily.
Have a separate bag or bin to keep used cloth face coverings in until they can be laundered with detergent and hot water and dried on a hot cycle.
If you must rewear your cloth face covering before washing, wash your hands immediately after putting it back on and avoid touching your face.
Discard cloth face coverings that no longer cover the nose and mouth, have stretched-out or damaged ties or straps, cannot stay on the face, or have holes or tears in the fabric.
Health experts also have suggested routinely washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitizer before and after touching your face or face coverings.
Once surgical masks get moist, experts say their effectiveness diminishes. If a makeshift mask gets moist or is visibly soiled, it’s time to switch to a clean one.
To clean them, run masks through the laundry or hand wash them with soap and water.
This is mostly a non-issue for me since NYC hasn't re-opened yet, but I've yet to receive a response to what's the downside to wearing a mask when medical experts agree that the virus is spread in part by airborne particles from coughs, sneezes, & heavy breathing (running, singing). Is it cosmetic? wasteful to use disposable products? a burden to add cloth ones to the laundry? I'm talking about situations where a policy is in place that anyone who enters must wear a mask to protect other people even if you're asymptomatic. What's the downside?
Posted above. If you believe poor people have the ability to or even the general populace is keeping up to those sanitation guidelines you are nuts.

If a person has the ability to follow those guidelines they should. If they can't, covering their mouth and nose with a bandana is better than nothing. There is no downside to attempting to keep people that you have to be near safe. I don't think the whole pandemic would just immediately go away if everyone wore masks in public, but I bet fewer people would get sick. Isn't that reason enough for each person to do what they are able to do? Wearing a mask at the store is not hard to do. Period.
There most certainly IS a downside to using unsanitary masks.

Our posts must've been up simultaneously. I hadn't read your LA guidelines post. I was asking what - generally - is the downside to wearing a mask.
I'll delete my post to avoid confusion.
I'll leave it to one of you to explain how masks are not going to get damp wearing them in extreme summer heat.
I think a good analogy is a seat belt. .
I don't think this guys' transport had a seat belt available.
