The defining question about global order for this generation is whether China and the United States can escape Thucydides’s Trap. The Greek historian’s metaphor reminds us of the attendant dangers when a rising power rivals a ruling power—as Athens challenged Sparta in ancient Greece, or as Germany did Britain a century ago. Most such contests have ended badly, often for both nations, a team of mine at the Harvard Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs has concluded after analyzing the historical record. In 12 of 16 cases over the past 500 years, the result was war. When the parties avoided war, it required huge, painful adjustments in attitudes and actions on the part not just of the challenger but also the challenged.
So maybe it's not quite inevitable, but history strongly suggests it.

It's scary and it makes me so angry that our country has allowed ourselves to be so dependent on their country, building their nation from nothing to not just a rival competitor economically, but a serious military threat. The US is good at making war, we aren't very good at winning war anymore. That would be just devastating.
I so badly hope we can somehow unwind the things that China has cornered the market on, becoming the global leader in so very many categories. The debt that our nation relies upon to fund the ever growing spending programs that we don't want to pay for ourselves. I'm afraid we are too far gone. We've done cut our own throat. From Nixon on up, the Chinese have used us and executed their rise to prominence in a relatively short period of time. In 40 years going from a country of economic insignificance and irrelevance to one that could literally end our way of life.
The angle has come to be that both countries need each other. But what if one decided it didn't need the other, surely havoc would ensue.
How would it start? Might China act out militarily with say Taiwan, daring us to act? Would they ever actually dump their T-Bills, or stop buying new ones? Could they withhold essential medical supplies and medicines?
How the hell do we get out of this, or will we forever their prisoner now? I know one thing, we need to stop increasing our dependence on them, both in goods and funding...if it's not already too late. If we can get a little more independence from them, then maybe they can have some kind of meaningful civil unrest or uprising where their economy tanks throwing the country into turmoil and we will have sufficiently moved supply chains and debt reliance away from China so as not to be harmed by such a potentially catastrophic event there. Maybe that is best case.

Certainly is possible with the focus being that "war" as we know is probably changing as well.
When is the last time China actually used any of their conventional military assets? The US is stretched thin and war weary and I'm not sure we have what it takes as a society any more to fight a war against another super power and all that would entail. But our military does have plenty of experience. Where as with China, they might have built up their military the last couple decades, but they've never used any of it. Any war with China would be a lot of unconventional stuff...cutting off supply chains and financing. This is why it is critical we begin to shift our dependence on both now so they will have less levers to pull should this ever come to pass. China might have some advantages, but experience matters, one clear advantage for the US.
I'm not ready to say their intent was to weaponize the virus to serve that end game. I know much of their cover up, but the jury is still out on what actually happened and why.

Cyber...they probably have a cyber advantage, but nobody really knows what our cyber capabilities are. People talk how China can shut our grid down and this and that, I assume we can do all the same to them.

That depends greatly on what these multinational companies choose to do. Unless our government is going to create new trade law.
Think about the green economy people want to embrace and utilize here. All that stuff, China dominates solar, wind, batteries, the components. We want to be green, we need to be green here with our own stuff. That's all I want to say because it is too early to get this thread off track.
There has to be a will to shift reliance and production out of China. It seems like now more than ever there is a will to do this. What about this time next year? Back to business as normal?
I hope that both sides know that a hot war would quickly escalate and get out of control.
That said, I believe we've been in a simmering cold war for at least two decades, aided by American elites, globalists, and technocrats whose aim was profit and the dream of global gov't, new world order, or whatever term you like.
How else to describe the awful trade agreements, the slap-on-the-wrist type punishment/reaction to massive intellectual theft, and scant response to tens of thousands of lost factories?
I think there will be a couple of years window where China will be chastised by the world following this virus, and we must massively incentivize industries to return to the US. Changing our tax system to something like the Fair Tax could do it without politicians picking the winners and without direct financial incentives. But there's limited time to act before the potential of war becomes more likely.
The wild card may be the Chinese people. Should they tire of totalitarian control, democratic reforms could unseat the communists and change their trajectory. I've seen some reports saying that there is an undercurrent of such feelings. But in a country that suppresses all news that doesn't fit the gov't narrative, its as much rumor as fact at this point.

The end of May some will come thru after that more volume wise and more often. They come in at 36,000 miles per hour. If the whole rock comes thru it can make craters or fires. By December or January bigger rocks are coming.
