How the media influences
So, a former waitress is now a climate change expert? I am learning alot about politics following her. She still doesnt know where the bathrooms are yet she is front and center on a climate bill? I always assumed that one had to know something about a topic before they sit down to regulate it. This is frightening.

This bothers you? Funny that you would talk about qualifications, considering almost none of Trump’s cabinet have any qualifications at all for their positions. And the few that are actually qualified Trump doesn't believe. And yet you feel the need to post about this? Wow!
So, a former waitress is now a climate change expert?
Shouldn't surprise you, Hollywood is full of actors who are experts on Politics.

So true. A second rate reality TV show star even became president.

Fair enough. And actors like Robert DeNiro can show off their language skills by dropping F bombs when talking about the President; goes to credibility.

And the same ones who are critical of Hollywood actors would undoubtedly be critical of Ronald Reagan.

A former waitres is now a Congresswoman with a staff to brief her on matters, which would make her much more informed than anyone on this board. It’s called ambition and career development.....foreign concepts to you and BIGV it seems.
I am learning alot about politics following her.
I’ve always found this incredibly odd. I avoid Trump If I can.....haven’t read his tweets in over a year, never listened to a single speech. Why follow someone you hate? Are you a sadist?
And the same ones who are critical of Hollywood actors would undoubtedly be critical of Ronald Reagan.
As I recall they were. Throughout his candidacy & presidency, he was mocked for being an actor. Apparently, being gov of California had no merit. Having majored in economics in college was dismissed. He had a tough final year when he was mocked for "acting" when he was actually living w/Alzheimer's.
And actors like Robert DeNiro can show off their language skills by dropping F bombs when talking about the President; goes to credibility.
I’m sure DeNiro is at home right now worrying about his credibility with you. “Language skills”, lol. Have you read your own posts? Shakespeare you are not.

Me, too. I can't stand to even look at Trump & haven't listened to him. I never read his tweets. I know what's being said by reading transcripts & news accounts, but I can't actually stomach him. I had my fill of him swaggering around NYC in his Art of Daddy's Deal years.
Why follow someone you hate is a great question.
We could use a thread on the details of the Green New Deal, assuming we are capable still of talking to each other about things we might disagree without name calling, but this thread clearly isn't it.
I don't see the point of denigrating someone who has achieved more than any of us on this board at the age of 29 or anyone else for that matter.
AOC is not just a waitress. She graduated from Boston Univ w/a dual major in international relations & economics. She interned on Capitol Hill and was an officer of a non-profit going back to college. In high school, she was 2nd in Intel's international SCIENCE fair so she actually understands science. She understands the briefs on the topics she gets.
The man currently in the Oval Office was a rich playboy w/family money who got lucky when he was cast on The Apprentice that gave him the national celebrity he'd always craved. By his own admission, he made far more money on that show than he ever made in real estate.
Did no one here ever work a job that was beneath their skills & education while pursuing something larger? Especially when we were in our teens & early 20s? Are we supposed to be defined by that?
It would be nice to discuss a topic w/o trolls.
So, a former waitress is now a climate change expert?
Who hasn't started out as a waitress or some other job to earn money? So it's bad she worked to earn a living as a young person? Do you only trust the opinion of those born into money and didn't have to work to support themselves?
Shouldn't surprise you, Hollywood is full of actors who are experts on Politics.
So are music fan message boards.

There is accuracy in that, yet at the same time for years the GOP was known as the party of Reagan. I'm not sure how those two concepts reconcile.
Now it is Trump's party of enablers. Wonder what Reagan would think.

Fair enough. The difference being, Hollywood truly believes their thoughts and opinions matter......

Working class kid aces college - not easy. More to her credit! Most of these pols left and right are upper crusties.
Fair enough. The difference being, Hollywood truly believes their thoughts and opinions matter......
Heaven forbid!! Can’t have anyone believing their opinions matter! Why would you think your thoughts and opinions don’t matter? Just curious.

Yes! And this "Genius" has stated the world is going to end in 12 years!

Reagan wouldn't believe it was his party. Platform aside, when he was a candidate, there was concern that a DIVORCED man could become prez in the dawn of the evangelical zealot stranglehold on the party. It was that bunch who really cemented the anit-abortion single issue vote for the GOP.
They seem to have faded yet that single-issue lives on. As if any one of those who've been shown to be womanizers wouldn't have sent their GFs for an abortion. Trump & Edwards got caught because their GFs wanted an "anchor baby" hold on them & thus, we have Marla's $5mm Tiffany. Even Karen McDougal said her affair w/Trump was "unprotected."
IMO, Trump's enablers are wavering if they think their seat is in danger.
Fair enough. The difference being, Hollywood truly believes their thoughts and opinions matter......

Both are citizens with opinions, just different professions.

True. I would ask if you believe there is a sense of entitlement attached to celebrity (Hollywood) opinions simply by virtue of the size of the podium? Realizing that not everyone sees things through the same types of glasses, I would say that my plumber's opinion (being a citizen) is just as "valid" as any Hollywood personality... But, as the dumbing down of America continues, which one is more influential?.....Me? I stopped listening to the Clowns in front of the camera, decades ago....but the % of people actually listening is disturbing....

I don't believe they feel entitled. Melania, Erik, and Don Jr, Jared Kushner are entitled.
If after years of waiting tables you became successful, and happen to be passionate about social issues, wouldn't you try to make a difference? Or would you still stoically keep it on low-traffic message boards? Is there an equation for how successful one becomes to how silent they must remain?
When you consider that there are many more financially successful white color folks with much more actual influence (because honestly, who do you think is actually changing their vote because of what George Clooney says?) into policy than entertainers have, it's clear you simply disagree with a handful of successful people who speak their mind (well, except the President).
I would say that my plumber's opinion (being a citizen) is just as "valid" as any Hollywood personality... But, as the dumbing down of America continues, which one is more influential?.....Me?
They earned that influence fair and square, by having talent and being able to generate millions of dollars a year for a studio. Instead of asking, “Me?”....go out and build a fan base like they did.....generate millions for your company. We make our own beds.
I stopped listening to the Clowns in front of the camera, decades ago....but the % of people actually listening is disturbing....
Don’t be jealous of their influence just because you don’t have any - go out and build your own! You call them clowns because of their political affiliation....and their profession.....does your bigotry ever end? Good lord.

Maybe she did her homework, became informed, and understands the real consequences right now.
This woman only opens her mouth to change feet; have you listened to her speak?...OMG A ten year old in an adults body. I find it very unlikely she commands the respect of any of her colleagues who have actually given her the time of day.
So in reference to the statement above, I doubt this is the case.

This is incredibly dismissive of a smart, well-spoken young woman. It is an accurate description of our President, however.
Funny how the right wIngers like to complain when liberals from Hollywood have an opinion, yet those same people are quick to share an open letter by Charlie Daniels or Ted Nugent right here on this forum. They might have even applauded Clint Eastwood talking to an empty chair pretending it was Obama. And certainly some made a big deal about a Kardasian meeting with Trump to talk about some issue or another, or Kanye West or Dennis Rodman expressing their love of Trump while wearing a red hat.
Maybe she did her homework, became informed, and understands the real consequences right now.

So you respect the intellect of the orange blob of blubber who speaks like a lying, spoiled 10 year old, over somebody who can easily take him to school on many levels?. 😛
I will patiently stand by while you show me the quote where I have said that.

Is that it, or is it that her views run contrary to yours? I've listened to her speak, and there is enough substance in what she says. Compared to Trump, who you don't seem to have a problem with, she does not speak at the surface level of issues. What is your opinion of the depth of Trump's understanding of detail?

You are one low-rent, no shame individual. You attack political affiliation, profession, and now a woman’s physical characteristics. Get off this site with your trash.

So, a former waitress is now a climate change expert?
Yes! And this "Genius" has stated the world is going to end in 12 years!
And here is where she got that -
Her comments are in reference to a United Nations-backed climate report, published late last year, that determined the effects of climate change to be irreversible and unavoidable if carbon emissions are not reined in over the next 12 years.
It’s a reasonable take if you’re aware of the 12-year mark outlined in the 2018 UN “Special Report on Global warming of 1.5ºC,” released in October. It mentions the year 2030 — 12 years from now — as the point of no return, if we keep on our current path. It’s mentioned 35 times in the report in varying applications.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we only have a time frame of a dozen years to keep global warming at a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) over preindustrial levels.
Limiting global warming to 1.5 compared with 2 will reduce the impacts we’re likely to see on ecosystems and human health. According to the UN:
“The report finds that limiting global warming to 1.5ºC would require ‘rapid and far-reaching’ transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport, and cities. Global net human-caused emissions of carbon dioxide, would need to fall by about 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching ‘net zero’ around 2050.”
