Bobby Douglass was not a star passer, but a solid runner and entertaining player. He was like a wild, out of control horse running all over the field.

This is from Tony Conigliaro's 1970 book, Seeing It Through -- Tony was in the dugout for the 1967 WS -- of course he couldn't play having been beaned in Aug. -- anyways here's Tony C's recollections of the late stages of a Game 5 in St.L pretty unmatched in Sox WS all-times
"In the ninth Ellie Howard singled with the bases loaded. One run scored on the hit, and another when Roger Maris' throw to the plate was high. I was leaping up and down in the dugout. I looked out at Ellie standing on first base and he looked like the biggest man in the world. He'd been a great asset to the club ever since we got him from the Yankees [on Aug. 3].
"From the first day he joined our ballclub I don't think I saw one of our pitcher ever shake off his signs. Usually, a pitcher will stare down from the mound and if he doesn't like what he sees, he shakes his head and waits til the catcher comes up with something he wants.
"But not with Ellie. They had too much respect for him. He gave them confidence, and I know that after the Series, [Cy Young winner] Jim Lonborg paid tribute to Ellie by saying that having him behind the plate took the burden of thinking off his own shoulders."

Never seen a picture of Earl that young; though the expression on his face still shows someone ready to explode and say f-u and kick some dirt on an umpire

Thanks. As a kid I remember him and Garagiola (sp?) doing the NBC Saturday game of the week. Nice memories.

I got all of this from a pretty good source, and ex-Red who was drunk enough to let it fly. The Reds clubhouse was set up with Bench and Perez at one end and Rose and Morgan at the other. These "bookends" had what looked like a friendly rivalry going but truth be told Bench and Rose couldn't stand each other. Perez was the stabilizing force in the middle of it.
He also said that, aside from Morgan, most of the Reds didn't care much for Rose in general as a person. He was about Mr. Pete Rose above all, and the hell with the rest of the guys.
Although they respected his ability, he was disliked for being a self-centered hot dog. Rose intentionally wore a batting helmet about three sizes too big so it would always be flying off as he ran the bases, a big part of his image. Stuff like that. Notice how none of the Reds spoke up for Rose when he got swept up in the gambling problems or banned from the HOF? Not one.
Now you know.

I have heard all of that. Is it true? Who knows. As a child I thought he was a dick. Couldn't stand him. What he did to Ray Fosse? My God.
Having said that, I think he should be in the HOF. He did nothing wrong as a player.
His recent comments that he thinks he will be in the HOF someday I find idiotic. If Joe Jackson isn't in after almost 100 years, I don't see Rose having a shot. Much more evidence against Rose.
My two pennies.
