Bottom line is that nationally Trump is not popular.

Your diligence is commendable. Are there polls about the influence/popularity of the Trump Media Group - Coulter, Ingraham, Limbaugh? Or is that demonstrated through ratings? I'm mystified by the hold they have & how masterfully they must spin things.

Frankly, I can't see how Trump can maintain popularity w/anyone more than his base much longer. Between the shutdown that extends to rural Republicans, Rudy's admission that the campaign conspired w/Russia, Trump's obstruction of justice by directing Cohen to lie to Congress & attempt to intimidate him by threatening his father-in-law, pulling government transportation from the Speaker on a mission & leaking her itinerary including troop location in Afghanistan, plus pulling the davos delegation the same day Melania is vacationing via government aircraft, who can support him?

Seems like the only neutral thing he's done in months is buy 1,000 hamberders at his expense for the Clemson team. It would've been good enough if he'd bought 300, but he can't help but lie.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY 3 p.m.

While some believe he will declare a National Emergency, others think he will end the shutdown and then work on the wall separately with the Democrats. The Democrats reportedly sent him a way to do that. We shall see.

Where's AWOL Mitch. He certainly has abdicated his job and responsibilities to the people of this country. He could have allowed a floor vote on legislation to open the gov't. Instead he got under the table for Trump. Thanks for doing a great job, Mitch. The voters in your state of Kentucky should be embarrassed to have sent you back to DC.

Perfect for a special family. After all why not? Melania is entitled - isn't she as a member of the royal family?

Not a royal family, but certainly a CRIME family....For being so rich these con artists seem to stoop to any level to save a few bucks. The Boy Scout fee thing via the Trump Foundation shows just how cheap and not so rich they are.

Not...if you are trying to prove that said government workers aren't needed.

At some point very soon the already minor talking point that these government workers are no longer entitled to their jobs or needed for their jobs will become a major talking point.

Watch for some Frank Luntz style verbiage expanding the "non-essential" theme.

There was a time not too long ago that many around these parts would be more than delighted at the prospect of thousands of government workers losing their jobs. Now's their time to step up and show support!

Mitch is running scared....To hold power he can't allow a vote as it'll piss the Trumpsters and Right wing radio/talk show folks off just enough to put the Senate leadership role in jeopardy...Mitch is all about Mitch.

From a political science point-of-view, I don't blame him for holding out. One thing that makes him and Pelosi so good is that they have a keen feel for what sounds like it matters vs. what really matters.

IMO, he's not holding out for the Democrats to cave, as he knows they won't because they simply don't have to. He's holding out for Trump to cave.

Yep...This talking point should drop any day now. The problem for the Republicans is more and more Americans are experiencing just how crucial these government workers and by extension these government agencies actually are. In a sense it's a wake up call to many Americans just what it is their government does.

I agree....And thus he'll save face with the Ann Coulter's of the world and of course little Donnie thereby keeping Trump's base on his side....

Crucial jobs that can be replaced with a private sector, government contract solution? Maybe those contracts awarded to companies that have personal connections to the Administration? That sorta thing? 😉

Absolutely....Just as with Medicare/caide, social security.Veterans administration, etc...The usual Republican playbook.

Every time I read about the Prison Industrial Complex and the expansion of it, I'm floored by how deeply, deeply disturbing it is...and that's but one example.

It's scary for sure....And Trump and his administration are presently very quietly and behind the scenes making a play to privatize the VA. Enough so that every Veteran should be calling their Senator/Congressperson demanding an investigation.

Hopefully Pelosi and/or the committee leadership that oversees the VA will hold hearings and look into what the Trump administration is doing to the VA...

Mitch isn't AWOL. He's actively promoting Trump. Any senator can call for a vote on a bill unless there is an objection so Tim Kaine of Virginia called for a vote on the House bill that would reopen all the government except DHS on Thursday. There was an objection. Guess who? McConnell.

But that's the point, isn't it? Mitch can prevent bills from being voted upon, can't he? The net effect is that Mitch is in position to block. It's been a bunch of years since my last US Gov't Class or Political Science Class, so maybe I'm forgetting something, but I think we're saying the same thing? Clarification if needed...thx.

Yep, McConnell's a bad guy. I've been criticizing him for not doing his job by bring the bills to a vote, putting them on Trump's desk for veto/signature, and returning for an over-ride. Also, for sprinting out of town so he doesn't have to answer questions. Kaine's maneuver reminded me that McConnell isn't the only one w/the power to call for a vote. So, when someone else had the guts to make the call, McConnell was right there to object. He's both passively and actively preventing a vote. Swell guy.

Trump's speech didn't change anything or offer any compromise.

The longest shut down in American history, the Trump/McConnell Shut Down, will continue. This is the weakest I've ever seen America. We are destabilized and vulnerable. This is exactly what Putin wants. This is exactly what Traitor Trump and his supporters want.

This shows how on top of things Don The Wall Trump is

"Trump says San Antonio shows border walls works, despite city being 150 miles from border and having no wall"

Donald Trump has cited San Antonio as proof that border walls make the US safer, despite the Texas city not having a border wall and being 150 miles from Mexico.

“Everyone knows that walls work,” claimed the president as he addressed reporters outside the White House. “You look at different places, they put up a wall, no problem.

“You look at San Antonio, you look at so many different places; they go from one of the most unsafe cities in the country to one of the safest cities, immediately. It works. We have to put them up, and we will put them up. We've got to.

He was probably talking about how the walls of the Alamo were effective in keeping out the Mexican Army...Oh wait, nevermind.

The Alamo was my 1st thought, too, and to be fair, it worked in the 1700s. Sadly, it reflects DJT's thinking. He can't seem to grasp the power of existing and beta technology; he's stuck on a physical barrier effective in earlier centuries.

"I want it to be so beautiful because maybe someday they'll call it The Trump Wall. Maybe. So I have to make sure it's beautiful, right? I'll be very proud of that wall. If they call at this The Trump Wall, it has to be beautiful."

His main ambition is to build monuments to himself.

The whole speech is worth reviewing:

DONALD TRUMP: I will build the greatest wall that you've ever seen. And I would never do this myself. But I hope it will be so -- actually, it will even look great. I already know what it should look like. You know, the other day, they were saying, I was watching these characters -- politicians that are running against me -- you can't get Mexico to pay for the wall! Of course you can. They can't because they never would even think of it.

Do you know how much Mexico is making from the United States? That's peanuts, the wall. And then they say, you can't build a wall! It's too big, it doesn't work. Well, 3,000 years ago -- right? The Great Wall of China was built. We would like to have that wall. That wall, nobody gets through. That I can tell you. And that's 13,000 miles. right? And that was done between -- did it take them 500 years in all fairness. A pretty long time. They don't stop. We need tough people to negotiate with the Chinese. They don't stop. But The Great Wall of China was built.

In Mexico, they were complaining 13,000 miles. It doesn't work. They have these walls built. They said people go over these walls with a ladder. Do you know how tall the wall is? Like this. It is not a wall. It is a little fence. People put up a ladder that they buy at home depot and they jump and that's the end of it. I'm talking about a wall. See that ceiling there? higher. Did you ever see -- okay. Did you ever see the plank for parking garages? As an example. Not a big deal.

I'm a great builder. What do I best in life, I build. Your infrastructure is crumbling. Isn't it nice to have a builder? A real builder. So you take precast plank. It comes 30 feet long, 40 feet long, 50 feet long. You see the highways where they can span 50, 60 feet, even longer than that, right? And do you a beautiful nice precast plank with beautiful everything. Just perfect. I want it to be so beautiful because maybe someday they'll call it The Trump Wall. Maybe. So I have to make sure it's beautiful, right? I'll be very proud of that wall. If they call at this The Trump Wall, it has to be beautiful. And you put that plank up and you dig your footings. And you put that plank up -- there's no ladder going over that. If they ever go up there, they're in trouble, because here's no way to get down. Maybe a rope.
