Fox News Channel crushed MSNBC and CNN yet again during the busy news month of October, topping both networks combined among total viewers.

FNC averaged 1.7 million total viewers to finish as the most-watched basic cable network for the 28th straight month. Rupert Murdoch’s cable news network also topped all of basic cable during the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m. ET for the fifth consecutive month despite heavy competition from Major League Baseball playoffs and other major sporting events, such as NFL and NBA games.

Fox News averaged 2.8 million primetime viewers as ESPN averaged 2.7 million and TBS picked up 2.5 million to round out the top three. MSNBC finished fourth, averaging 1.5 million primetime viewers and CNN finished a dismal ninth while failing to crack the one-million viewer plateau and finishing behind networks such as Hallmark Channel and HGTV.

In the total day category, only Fox News averaged more than 1 million viewers with ESPN, MSNBC, Nickelodeon and TBS rounding out the top five. CNN averaged 689,000 viewers as its audience continues to shrink – dropping five percent compared to the same week last year while both FNC and MSNBC gained viewers.

FNC was up across the board compared to last year, with the biggest increase being a whopping 25 percent gain in primetime. In addition to the five percent drop in total audience, CNN fell 16 percent in the key demo of adults age 25-54.

“Hannity” averaged 3.5 million viewers to finish the month as the most-watched program on cable news, followed by “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” “The Ingraham Angle,” “The Five” and “Special Report with Bret Baier.” “Hannity” has now finished first for seven straight months. MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” finished sixth, averaging 2.6 million viewers.

“Hannity” has dominated 2018, finishing No. 1 in all three quarters and nine of out of the 10 months among total viewers.

The most-watched CNN program on cable news among total viewers was “Cuomo Prime Time,” which finished No. 23 – behind 14 Fox News and eight MSNBC programs.

Among the key demo, Fox News had nine of the 10 most-watched cable news programs with “Maddow” finishing seventh. This is the first month since Feb. 2017 that “Maddow” failed to crack the top five among both total viewers and the demo.

“FOX & Friends,” “America’s Newsroom,” “Outnumbered,” “Outnumbered Overtime with Harris Faulkner,” “The Daily Briefing with Dana Perino,” “The Five,” “Special Report with Bret Baier,” “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and “The Ingraham Angle” all beat their timeslot competition on MSNBC and CNN combined in total viewers. During the month of Oct., “America’s Newsroom,” “Outnumbered,” “The Five” and “Tucker Carlson Tonight” also beat MSNBC and CNN combined in the demo.

In addition, Howie Kurtz’s “MediaBuzz” crushed CNN’s “Reliable Sources,” with the FNC media program averaging 1.5 million viewers compared to 767,000.

Interesting. Fox's prime time viewership is less than the number of votes Hillary beat Trump by in the last election. Those 3 million votes didn't make Hillary president, and those 2.8 million viewers don't make Fox News any more credible.

Howard Stern has a larger audience than all of those networks combined.

[Edited on 11/1/2018 by lukester420]

So true.

FOX is nothing more than a propaganda wing of the Trump WH. FOX is complicit in advancing his conspiracy theories and vice a versa. Beyond an occasional one-off (example - Leslie Stahl), Trump won't be interviewed by any other cable network because he knows he would be challenged more than he is capable of answering or answering with any semblance of the truth.

Also several of Trump's inner circle staff have come from where? FOX of course. For example Bill Shine & Kimberly Guilfoyle both were let go by FOX for inappropriate behavior and sexual misconduct scandals. Their sexual scandals make them a perfect fit to hang with the Trumps - Guilfoyle is Donnie Jr's new girlfriend and Shine is deputy chief of staff for communications.

FOX and Trump = one happy family. MAGA.

No, it doesn't. It does show which networks are being watched, just as the title of the thread contends.
Advertisers like higher ratings and are willing to pay more for commercials on the networks that have higher ratings.

Among the key demo

Key demo for whom? This matters greatly.

Fox News Channel crushed MSNBC and CNN yet again during the busy news month of October, topping both networks combined among total viewers.

I’m which dayparts?

FNC averaged 1.7 million total viewers to finish as the most-watched basic cable network for the 28th straight month. Rupert Murdoch’s cable news network also topped all of basic cable during the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m. ET for the fifth consecutive month despite heavy competition from Major League Baseball playoffs and other major sporting events, such as NFL and NBA games.

Impressive for basic cable. How does this compare to online viewership?

Fox News averaged 2.8 million primetime viewers as ESPN averaged 2.7 million and TBS picked up 2.5 million to round out the top three. MSNBC finished fourth, averaging 1.5 million primetime viewers and CNN finished a dismal ninth while failing to crack the one-million viewer plateau and finishing behind networks such as Hallmark Channel and HGTV.

Clearly Fox wins here. But how telling is this of how poor the cable TV industry is in todays smartphone world? 2.8 million viewers? That’s it????? Among 350 million people?

“Hannity” averaged 3.5 million viewers to finish the month as the most-watched program on cable news, followed by “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” “The Ingraham Angle,” “The Five” and “Special Report with Bret Baier.” “Hannity” has now finished first for seven straight months. MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” finished sixth, averaging 2.6 million viewers.

“Hannity” has dominated 2018, finishing No. 1 in all three quarters and nine of out of the 10 months among total viewers.

Remember folks, ratings are measured to determine ad rates and nothing more. Looking into it further than that does yourself a huge disservice. Otherwise, you’d have to crown Howard Stern well over Hannity. Howard has quadruple the amount of viewers.

The big takeaway from this article is how minuscule cable TV has become in a digital world.

Hey BoytonBrother, what are "dayparts"?

Dayparts are various blocks of hours during the day, such as 6am-10am or 7pm-midnight. Research clearly shows when most people listen to or watch a medium, therefore ratings reports break down ratings by dayparts so that advertisers can see which shows win in each daypart. Then they can break it down further by age group. That’s why it really means nothing when a medium says they are #1, because you have to ask, “#1 in what?”

Absolutely. I can only speak for myself but when I want intelligent, objective insight on immigration, voter’s rights or any other issues on the ballots I choose NPR.

Since none of the Faux news koolaid drinkers can give any insight into who or what this key demographic is, I’ll just say what we already know.

Key Demo: Crotchety octogenarians and religious fanatics who fear the democrat boogeyman is coming for their precious assault rifles and think gays and people of color are out to destroy their precious way of white conservative life.

Crotchety octogenarians

Or, people who have worked, invested, saved and served their whole lives. If they are just now 80, they've memories of parents who may have perished in WW II. They vote and have earned the right to act anyway they please.

their precious way of white conservative life.

Ah, the race issue and look who brought it up, a Liberal

Sure he can, he ignores the race issue and acts like it's some kind of made up conspiracy made up by the left.
I didn't say crotchety octagenerians aren't allowed to act a certain way, just pointed out they are Fox's demographic which you did not address because you were too busy being triggered by a post having to do with guns and racism.

Yet another "PC" term that make zero sense when applied to my response. Please define "Triggered"...and, who initially brought skin color into this interaction?

Didn't vote for the guy that lives in the WH and don't side with either party but this statement makes no sense. FOX has been around since I was a kid and the guy that lives in the WH had nothing to do with politics at the time they started.

So was FOX started because they figured the guy that lived in the WH could use them decades later?

Speaking of FOX, how many of you watch football on FOX EVERY Sunday?

Hmm...

Triggered- caused by particular action, process or situation. Here I can even use it in a sentence for ya.
Anytime someone questions Fox News or Trumpolini you are “triggered” and feel the need to go on the defensive.
Any time someone mentions the word gun you are “triggered” and go on a diatribe about the 2nd amendment.

For someone who is supposedly an independent you are always quick to stick by the Republican guns at every opportunity.

Who brought skin color into a discussion about the demographic? I did, what of it demographic implies things like age, socio-economic status, religion, ethnicity, nationality... You can ignore it all you want but it doesn’t change that racism is still a major issue in our society that is not going to go away as long as it is still prevalent....or people continue to refuse to acknowledge its existence.

It's really has nothing to do whatsoever about when they became a network years ago & prior to Trump being in the White House.

It's more about the evolution of the station and the stances they take such as supporting / backing up the daily factually incorrect things Trump says about issues such as The Constitution and our laws & that network being complicit in peddling conspiracy theories such as the ridiculous "deep state" that Trump & Fox have used to tarnish the FBI and CIA.

Fox is evolving more to the left than the right the last few years. But way more important is that many upper level members of the FBI & CIA did a fine job of tarnishing themselves. What is a disgrace is the lack of attention the other networks give that situation. It's called bias. The left doesn't think they are biased because those networks do their thinking for them. Seek the truth where ever it is and you will be enlightened.

That's one of the most hilarious lines I've heard in years unless by some measure someone would think that FOX, which is like 1000 standard deviations away from center to the right, and if by any chance it moves 1 standard deviation back towards the center...then evolving to the left would be accurate.
