I still believe Joe's staff and the people close to him are trying everything they can to convince him that this is a horrible idea...
They need live fact checking or it's just a joke.
No tests for drugs, no inspections for ear-prompters and no breaks. I hope they allow empty milk jugs behind the podiums for these two geezers with 80 year-old bladders!
@bigv has yet to be an issue

As much as I like the idea of live fact-checking, it seems like the whole debate could get bogged down with the two sides each arguing their version of the truth on each topic. They could easily spend the first hour debating the "truth" over one issue.

Trump is a pathological liar. Pick a day or pick an issue, and you get lies, lies, and more lies. From the Washington Post, and this is slightly outdated, see below. Tonight should be a banner night for him - he'll be like a pitbull and lighting up the stage with lies and deflection.
Previous presidents have lied or twisted the truth, but Mr. Trump’s distortions are on an epic scale. As of July, according to a database maintained by The Post, he had made more than 20,000 false or misleading statements in just 3½ years, including more than 1,000 about the coronavirus alone. His mendacity has been accelerating: While his first 10,000 lies accumulated in 827 days, The Post Fact Checkers reported, it took only 440 days to double the total.

You ever hear of a motorman's' friend?
www.quora.com/What-do-you-know-about-a-device-called-a-motorman-s-friend
Should have followed my suggestions from an earlier thread.
I also think Wallace should have been issued several air horns to break up the cross talks.
Biden mis-speaks that I caught so far:
200,000 dead so far, how many of them survived?
(will add as the debate goes on)
Chris needs a gavel. A sledgehammer, even.
200,000 dead so far, how many of them survived?
Sounded like a Yogi Beraism at first, until Biden made clear "them", referred to those afflicted as he continued. I think he spoke quickly at times, his stutter manifesting, with Trump's open mouth constantly at his heels.
A lot has been made of Trump's "stand by" remark to white supremacists, but I thought the defining moment was Trump's disregard for Beau Biden. Not only was it pretty heartless, as Beau died of brain cancer, but it's another example Trump's disregard for veterans.
Morning After
Okay, this thing went down pretty much as I expected it to. I find the press' response (mostly disgust - except for FOX News) to be somewhat incredulous. I watched on NBC. Their crew (Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd) seemed to actually be crying after the "debate". As much as I get their sentiment, I must paraphrase Tom Hanks in the film, "A League of Their Own" - "Crying? There's no crying in journalism!" Decorum!
I didn't participate on the debate team in high school or college. I did work in the Building Codes industry for about 30 years where I (media specialist/video director) televised or webcast code hearings - which are often presented in debate format. These proceedings followed something called Robert's Rules of Order - which I understand to be the generally accepted format for all types of debates. Last night's ... "debacle" (NBC's perspective) came nowhere near complying with this format.
Trump performed and acted exactly like most said that he would. His tactics involved name-calling, constant interruption and refusal to let the other guy have a say at all. As much as I felt bad for the moderator (Chris Wallace) - I'd have to give him an "F" for just being unable to keep Trump in his corner. Biden often appeared overwhelmed by the constant barrage.
As far as any substance goes - I think the single most troubling FACT that came out was that Trump still refuses to acknowledge that some portion of his supporters are verifiable racists and supremacists. He was given several chances to condemn groups like the Proud Boys and the Charlotte crowd. Instead, he tried to counter by charging Biden with a statement made by Hillary ("super predators"). While Joe didn't actually make the statement, he did (at the time) make some comments that didn't ring much differently.
If you didn't watch and you woke up this morning trying to find out who "won" - you can choose between CNN or FOX News. It doesn't seem to me that either watched or reported on the same ball game. If you're a Trump guy, you probably feel that your "Iron Mike Tyson" ran roughshod over "Peewee Herman". If you support Biden, you'll feel that Trump abandoned all civility and made a colossal a$$ of himself and sullied the experience. Whichever candidate that you support - I'm sure you feel that that guy "won".
No, it wasn't pretty at all. Did you expect it to be any different?
EDIT: Misidentified Chuck Todd as Matt Lauer. Fixed.
There is a Simpsons episode where Lisa reminisces about an event that happened long ago. As she begins to tell the story, the episode moves into a "flashback". As the flashback returns to real time, HOMER says (something like) "and that's what happened". Lisa inserts, "DAD! It was MY flashback!"
Last night, Trump (and Biden at times) interrupted so often that I actually forgot who Chris had asked the original question of. It was that surreal!
I knew it would be bad but even I underestimated how bad.
People need to look at each candidate and their positions on the issues as well as their perspectives, how they think and feel and what they want to accomplish.

We cannot decide on who to vote for based on a couple of debates. The Pence Harris debate is 10-7-20 and the next and final Trump vs Biden debate the week after on 10-15.20.
There are policy differences we need to look at.
Trump is against abortion, Biden wants to keep it legal.
Trump wants to get rid of Obamacare in its entirety, Biden wants to keep it but offer additional options.
Trump's approach to unrest and violent demonstrations is call in the cops, if the can't stop it, call in the National Guard. Biden wants local police to handle it and call in therapists to deal with the rage some of the protesters feel. He is big on community policing, adding to it, not defunding it.
Trump cut food stamps, Biden will not do that.
Trump is in favor of privatizing social security, Biden wants to keep it and work with Romney and others to ensure it exists and does not go bankrupt.
Trump is against Medicare for all. Biden favors that as an insurance option.
We all need to look at where they stand on the issues, because the country faces big challenges in 2021 and beyond.
Good post, & they have a 3rd debate as well, on Oct 22
they’ll never be able to properly regulate these debates to where they’re worthwhile/useful to watch
Put both candidates in side-by-side sound-proof glass booths. MUTE their mic's when it's not their turn to speak.
It'd be funnier n' hell to watch Trump going ballistic behind glass - pounding his fists against the booth! 😉
Or make it virtual and mute the candidate talking when it is not his turn. Muting is a good idea.
It has now come out that Trump arrived at the debate late, and he and his family (who didn't wear masks as they were supposed to) were not tested by the Cleveland Clinic prior to the debate. They took Trump at his word that he was tested. Remember in the debate when Trump said that everybody in the room was tested just prior to the debate? Well, that was yet another Trump lie. Trump is a sick, sick man...and I don't mean with Covid 19. I sure hope Biden didn't get infected.
They were standing 7 feet apart in Cleveland, article said
The VP candidates will be standing 12 feet apart Wed in Salt Lake City
Does that really make a difference? I thought the virus was more far reaching than that
Maybe Mike & Kamala will be the model of decorum & respect, staying w/the format using Robert’s Rules & avoiding the pitfalls of the 1st debate
covid cancels everything else, mayb they’ll just render it all moot & cancel the last 2 - viewing voters would not object🙃
Isolated it is not
A black man, Jonathan Price, noted in article as a pillar of the community, intervened trying to break up a fight between a man & woman in a Dallas suburb
It cost him his life - police arrived, tased him, then shot him dead
meanwhile 3 dead, 34 shot over the wknd in a city, Chicago, that has been this year what Baltimore was last year - riddled w/rampant gun violence
But These imo are topics that need to be included at the debates
It wouldn’t change anything, nothing ever has, but the candidates still need to address this stuff

Although there hasn't been contact tracing for Trump & we now know that he may have had symptoms even at the debate, there's no question the final 2 should be canceled. Nothing of substance will be "debated" & it puts far too many people at risk.
Final words and observation of the first Trump-Biden "debate" (read: FIASCO):
Had Tump ALLOWED Biden to speak - Biden might've hung himself with his own rope. Case in point: the topic that I most wanted to hear Joe address was the ... "activities" in the streets in some of our major cities. As soon as Joe said the words, "peaceful protest", Trump jumped on him like junkyard dog - never allowing Joe to come anywhere near specifying a particular plan or agenda. There's no telling what might've come out of Joe's mouth if Donny boy would've let him talk for 2 minutes.
I've already voted. Lesser of two evils. Not about who I wanted - more about who I don't want ... who I don't want more the other.
Rusty you can always vote for Howie Hawkins from the Green party. He won't win, but Howie has good ideas.
