LOL Stick
i'm somewhere back over marc's right shoulder, can't zoom clear enough.

The band was right… the road does go on forever… 😛

i wish i could see a higher def version so i could find myself in the background. i sure hope its in Kirk's photo book. cough, did Kirk take that picture?
I could be wrong but I don't think it was taken by Kirk. A younger, dark haired guy took it {I think} from the area of Jaimoe's drum kit.

Awesome!!! Just spotted myself in this pic. Between Derek and JJJ. Green and white Red Wings Jersey. Had to represent The D! What a couple of magical nights!!!!

At this point it doesn't matter. It's done. That moment is gone.
Reality is boxed in between these two comments
In situations like this I usually assume the truth is in the middle

Derek walked the walk and showed his true colors September 2013. That's all I need to know
as far as Gregg / Butch vs Dickie, it's like a bad marriage. Both are part wrong. It had to end. It's over.

I love this picture.

Thanks for the great pic. Just set it as my desktop background.
Me too! I'm in there somewhere, by Jaimoe's head probably.
As far as the whole Dickey thing goes, being in the audience that night, listening to this band pour their musical hearts and souls out for us until 125 AM, Dickey Betts did not cross my mind once. I love the guy and he's probably the reason I got into the band when I did, but Tuesday night was all about the 7 guys pictured above, IMO.

You are spot on Brendan and far better said than my earlier post, thank you.

Tuesday night was all about the 7 guys pictured above, IMO.
According to this, it's only about 3.

REEEEEEEEEEEEEACH.
I don't remember you trying this hard to get upset about stuff in the past.

Dickey certainly DID cross my mind, and I thought that the band (likely thanks to Warren and Derek) honored him quite nicely. Of course, they have always played his songs, but the one that really got me that night was Blue Sky. I didn't used to approve of this band playing it (and it WAS pretty rare), but on the 28th, I "got it". They played that song to honor Dickey Betts and his enormous contribution to the Allman Brothers legacy. It brought him in the house, if not physically. I love Dickey Betts but I was not wishing for his actual presence, given all the animosity and the current state of his chops. Blue Sky was a wonderful way to include him and I am so grateful they played it so beautifully.

Not sure how you can hear ANY band play songs written by Dickey Betts, let alone by the band he was with for many years...and not think of Dickey Betts!? 😮

Sorry. That comment was for the person who said Dickey DID NOT cross his mind once.
Cheers!

UPDATE. Butch has been on facebook confronting David Sperro about this. Butch says that as of Oct 20th when David issued his statement no reach out had happened. After that date Butch says there was contact made for Dickey to play on the Sat the 25th show. David agreed that this happened but it was turned down as the plan was to have Dickey only perform during the 2nd set with little to no rehearsal. He felt it was to disrespectful an offer. Butch then stated he would be putting this all in writing for his book.

So they did ask him and he said no. Butch just isn't gonna take being tied to the Whippin' Post!

That's great..another book... I didn't purchase Gregg's book and for the life of me I don't know why at the time.. So I went to my Library and took it out, read it and returned it.. I can't add anything to the debates over all of the content, except that Gregg does have a selective memory 😮 .. and he can't remember on most counts what he said or thinks the story might sound BETTER this way... and then there was the whole autograph thingy and I was happy with my decision in not purchasing it .
I'm not saying that my memory is great at this age .. and we all seem to glorify our pasts just a bit. Oh Well.. anyhoo ------------>
I was always an ABB fan and read and bought all I could about the band etc.. that was the first time that I didn't... I'll wait on Butch's recollections and pick it up at the Library as well..
Now if Dickey would write a book Oh MY....I know I would buy that one 😛 😉
and of course this is only IMHO....As far as this topic and all topics regarding ABB - Dickey Betts... it's time to put it to bed... ( although lots of fun reading and typing on my part t 😉 oo t 😛 ) we can go over and over and round and round ..and still it's their story and we are just spectators/fans and only they know WHY... in their own heads anyway... and each of them has their own version, feelings, perception and interpretation on what went down and why.. none of us are privileged to that.
I wish them all the best of health and to enjoy their lives ..for they, as the musicians they all are have enriched mine on so many levels... I Thank them "all" for that.
Just one more thought if you don't mind... someone , I forget who in this thread and I am to lazy to go back it's not that far back. Anyway but they wrote about hearing Blue Sky on I think closing night ..and it gave me chills in their memory and how they felt hearing it... Thanks for putting that into words.
I love the ABB , but Dickey Betts sound , tone, melody's , compositions and him standing center stage with the ABB is something I'll never get over.. There are moments in all our lives that are strictly defining, most are extremely personal... This is one I'll always share with who ever wants to hear and most the time even if they don't

So if Butch says they contacted Dickey on October 20th, does that mean Gregg should replace Derek in the subject of this thread?
It was before Sperro made his comments that Gregg stated they contacted Dickey and he was on a hunting trip.
Either way, it doesn't matter but at least we now know Derek wasn't involved in the lie and that should answer KCJimmy's aggressive question from the subject line.

It's all moot. The fact is that the 3rd best ABB line-up has closed the door and should shut the lights permanantly.
I've seen the ABB's scores of times since 1981 and I've seen and heard most recordings of the original band. Let it lay.... walk away.
Best ABB Era = Dickey/Duane/Berry - Unmatched initial glory
2nd Best - Dickey/Warren/Allen - Warren doing Duane allowing Dickey to be Dickey
3rd Best - Warren/Duane/Oteil - Double Duanes with phenominal slide guitar takes, but lacking Dickey's sweetness and tone which is unreplacable.
It is what it was and it was fabulous.

the 3rd best ABB line-up
This oughta' be fun! 😛 😉

I would insert the Dickey/Chuck era in the number 2 spot for my tastes. No shame coming in 4th with those lineups.
As for the notion that Dickey could possibly ruin the song, it is plain trolling. Not sure how having the actual singer and guitar sound could destroy it. Absurd.
Who lied? All of them about everything.

where does this lineup fall?

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

3rd Best - Warren/Duane/Oteil - Double Duanes with phenominal slide guitar takes, but lacking Dickey's sweetness and tone which is unreplacable.
I know Warren is a busy man, but I didn't know he built a Delorian and took Oteil back so they could play with Duane.

Hmm, you will never see a better lineup than the last few shows. How does that lineup
rank whoa going out on a limb first or second..
Anyone at the last couple shows feel differently?

not trolling at all.....
i call it like i see it.....
dickey is a sloppy guitar player now a daze (well, for about the last 10 years or so).....
just because he's the "actual singer" doesnt mean its going to be good........
and especially after watching some of the videos of him playing recently that have popped up this week confirm my belief.........

3rd Best - Warren/Duane/Oteil - Double Duanes with phenominal slide guitar takes, but lacking Dickey's sweetness and tone which is unreplacable.

I figured he meant Duane Betts.

I agree, that nails it. This has been the band for 14 1/2 years, through some great moments and some not-great ones. Acknowledging how complicated people's feelings are about all of these things, it does make sense that they'd put the cap on things since this lineup did so much and lasted so long. And just a reminder here that this is the longest-lasting version of the band ever by a very wide margin - about 1/3 of the band's history, and that's not including the 10 years the band wasn't playing together.

Original- not actual. Should we really get into this? Here goes.
Does playing songs at half-speed, filling them with off-key string bends and missing harmony runs and lyrics ruin a song? I'd say yes. (Then there's the obvious dislike some of the musicians have for each other, which doesn't usually help a performance.) Other people might feel differently for their own reasons, especially in this situation. Neither side is factually wrong but it's not trolling or crazy talk. A lot of people is that he can't hack it anymore. That's what I thought 10 years ago after that live album. The videos I've seen since then have not changed my mind and nobody's saying his playing has improved. The best anybody says is that he has good days and bad ones. I know it meant a lot to people when he sat in with the TTB last year, but I think most of us can admit his playing was nowhere close to the level of the rest of the band. You could see them adjust their playing in Liz Reed to accommodate him. Gregg's singing isn't what it was 5 or 10 years ago either and he's missed blown his share of lyrics and cut off some solos. In general it's less painful and don't screw up the songs as much. From a musical standpoint I'm not sorry they didn't throw away part of one of their last performances to include him. But anyway, that's me.

This is from less than a week ago. I realize the singers mic is not working, but listen to the guitar work here....o m g. The slide paying is awful, Dickey sounds, well... Duane's solo is OK and the keyboards are good, but I repeat, o m g.

David agreed that this happened but it was turned down as the plan was to have Dickey only perform during the 2nd set with little to no rehearsal. He felt it was to disrespectful an offer.
Not sure I understand. Why would he need to "rehearse"?...and why would that be "disrespectful"?....Blue Sky? IMOER? NOLTRW?... He couldn't come out and just play songs he had written and plays with his band?
