I was just thinking this morning how great it is that Cream did that 2005 reunion and documented it all on DVD before it was too late.
Today is indeed an extremely sad day in music history. Jack was truly legendary. No doubt a top 10 bassist IMO. Saw him twice. First time he was with Billy Cobham, Clem Clempson & David Sancious in Albany, NY on 12/6/80. It was the 13th show I ever saw. The 2nd, 350 shows later, he was w/ Ginger Baker & Bernie Worrell in Oakland, CA on 12/22/89. Both excellent shows!

Cream bandmates hail Jack Bruce

Baker and Clapton lead tributes following bassist and vocalist’s death at 71. Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton of Cream have led tributes to bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce, who died yesterday at the age of 71. The news was confirmed by his family and publicist following days of online rumours started by a hoax. He’d been suffering from liver disease.
Despite their difficult and often violent relationship, drummer Baker said last night: “A very sad day. Goodbye my friend.” Clapton added: “He was a great musician and composer, and a tremendous inspiration to me.”
Among the others paying their respects were members of Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Rush, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beatles, Queen, Asia and many others.
Tony Iommi: Very sad to hear of the passing of Jack Bruce, a major influence in music and an amazing bass player and singer. He was a hero to so many other players.
Geezer Butler: So sad. My biggest influence and favourite bass player. Thank you, Jack. RIP.
Geddy Lee: “One of the greatest rock bassists to ever live and a true and profound inspiration to countless musicians. He was one of my first bass heroes and was a major influence on my playing and my music. My heartfelt condolences to his family and fans.”

As with all of us music lovers, I think something of me has departed along with his passing.

David Ellefson: This is such a tremendous loss. I got to do a rock’n’roll fantasy camp with him in Las Vegas a few years back. What an amazing bassist and legacy.

Bruce Kulick: Jack was a tremendous talent. I jammed with him and met him.
Bernie Torme: For me the best bass player ever, an unbelievably great singer, a great writer, and an all round 100% genius musician. Cream with Jack gave me my ongoing love of the three-piece band format, before I had ever heard of Jimi Hendrix. Jack inspired me through all his changes. The last time I saw him was at a jazz festival in surrey, where he once again blew me away with his playing, singing, and total channelling of the music and the moment. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. What a loss for us all.

When people talk about Cream, it's usually Clapton, Clapton, Clapton. But Jack Bruce wrote more Cream material than Clapton did, and he sang much more than Clapton did. But bass players are usually overlooked.............

1968 or thereabouts...... walking down a street in what I thought of as my small town, although at twelve years old not wise enough to know that Rutherford, New Jersey, at a few miles due west of New York City was really not a "small town".... so walking down a street to my buddy Tom LaForge's house...... he was cool and had a dayglo blacklight, music hang out room, made from in a wood shed behind their big old white weather worn typical 1900's old Jersey home.... it was our secret 1968 private escape with music and psychedelia... nobody got high yet, but the music got us high. So walking down a big old oak and elm lined streets to Tom's house. Had a small AM radio I won as first place in a model contest with a gold metalflake 67 Impala customized...... and had this little radio cranked up to White Room. Frantic drums, wah wah lead guitar that was new to me, and this almost opera voice singing cryptic fantastic lyrics. All to a in your face bass. Rest in Peace Jack, and thank you.
