RIP Chick Corea

It's a cliche to say "we've lost one of the greats". But this time it's no cliche. Saw him many times. You could put him in any format: A straight ahead jazz trio, hard core fusion. Didn't matter. He was brilliant. Return To Forever and The Chick Corea Elektric Band were my favorites.

Yes Chick was a real innovator. Played with Miles Davis. I like what guitarist John Mayer said. Chick was always reacting to the musicians around him ready to go somewhere new. Mayer said if someone hit a clam Chick would jump on the bad note and change up and take it somewhere showing that everything can have a purpose.

The guy was amazing, a true giant. No one will argue that Chick and Herbie are the best of that generation. I was lucky enough to see him twice; once with Christian McBride and Brian Blade, once with Bela Fleck.
I prefer the non - electric stuff he did. I don't call it "straight ahead" jazz because it wasn't - even if it was traditional tunes the music always went somewhere new and mind blowing.
RIP

Saw Chick in a mind-blowing Return to Forever performance around 1978. True innovator. Got into his more standard jazz work later on. So sad to hear of this passing. Will definitely be missed.

Thanks!
The trio of Chick, Pattitucci, and Weckl has several recordings worth getting. Can't complain about Vinny instead of Dave.
The Trilogy albums are worth checking out, with Blade and McBride. I prefer Trilogy 2
