Keith Moon as told by Roger Daltrey, Howard Stern Show 2013

Don't trust rumor, take it from the source: Roger Daltrey. If you listen to this 5 minute segment from the Howard Stern interview (2013) you will likely be surprised that Keith Moon even made it to age 32. Funny, YES, but more than that, somewhat sad and shocking. Daltrey talks about nothing but Moon for a full 5 minutes.

Thanks for posting Rob. I watched a documentary on Moon about a year or so ago.....very interesting. I know Townshend maybe some comments about Moon and Entwistle little over a year ago that got some attention.

Very difficult to play with, the both of them, he mentioned. I saw a video some place where Chad Smith was showing what/how a normal drummer would play then proceeded to "Keith Moon it". Pretty amazing stuff.
Years ago there were plans for a Keith Moon movie that Mike Myers was spearheading but not sure whatever happened to it.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Thanks, Rob. I'm like a sponge when it comes to the history of all those musicians we grew up with. Keith was an exception, though. Obviously a very troubled man but boy could he play! Also, Roger has aged very well.
Thanks for sharing this.

I saw a Joe Walsh interview and Joe talked about partying with Keith Moon at motels and hotels years ago on a tour. The drugs and booze and flushing cherry bombs down the toilets. Joe said he and Keith Moon totally destroyed the plumbing at some hotels.
Joe said he doesn't remember much of the 70's and the 80's as he was on Cocaine, Vodka and some brand of cigarettes day and night. Joe claims he was drunk for over 20 years and he finally collapsed. His body was a wreck and the doctors told him he was going to die very soon if he didnt change his way of living right now.
Clapton has talked about his years of being drunk and on drugs. I read an interview from Clapton touching on this just over the weekend. Clapton said he couldn't play with out clams and loosing his place so he avoided playing and when he did do a tour he avoided doing any solos of substance and length and he was mean to the guys in the bands he was putting together to go out with him and now he regrets that and trys to be nice and accommodating to other musicians. Sounds like someone who was a key member of the Allman Brothers.

I watched this about a month ago. Its Roger Daltrey singing Stand By Me and the late Gary Moore takes a nice break on a Les Paul.

Cool version. I know I might get some flack for this , and I love Gary, prefer his hard rock and metal stuff, but I wish sometimes he would have reigned it in just a little bit on his blues stuff. Some very nice phrasing and melodies in that solo, great feel, but a lot of times he kinda goes to much metal in his blues. Just my opinion , which means nothing.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

@jszfunk Gary admitted that Albert King, B. B. King and Albert Collins all told him exactly what you said. He gets too fast and spastic for the blues. Gary said he was working on restraint and not letting the hard rock style he played for years dominate the solo and he said back when he wanted to show the hot hard rock and metal players in America he was the fastest he began to naturally play a lot notes when he was getting in the moment or the zone as he said but he needs to find a way to keep that tendency at bay when playing the blues.
Gary worked hard trying to have a vibrato as good as B. B. Kings when he decided he wanted to play the blues. Did he ever get there. I think he was close but Gary got further and further in the bottle until it killed him at age 58.

Gary was an incredible player, but I laugh when I watch the videos of him with Albert King. Gary overplays and does the corny guitar hero faces, and then Albert calmly plays beautiful, tasty music.

Gary doesn't overplay too badly with B. B.r King here. B. B. had the best left hand vibrato according to Clapton and Dickey.
But here with Albert Collins, Gary plays like he is standing next to Eddie Van Halen or Steve Via. And indeed EVH and Via had NO chance of blowing Gary Moore off the stage!! It would be like standing on 5th Avenue and trying to kick the Empire State Building over with your right foot. Nobody could blow Gary Moore off the stage when it came to that hotrod pedal to the metal shredding. It's got to be lighting fast yet the notes have to be clean and distinctive not run together and no clams. Gary was the man with that as was EVH, Steve Vai and several others such as Randy Rhodes with Ozzy.

And as with Albert Collins, Gary overplays to be playing with Albert King.
I found an interview with Albert Collins and he said when asked about Gary Moore that the man wants to play the blues and loves the blues but because of where he came from he plays a rock blues.

@robertdee I hope this is taken the way that I intend it. Whenever a white player sits in with a black blues legend, he should behave as if he was in church. All this grimacing, snarling and jumping around - all these histrionics should be left at home. Play the notes and learn from the master. I guess that was just Gary Moore being himself.
Also, I though this was a Keith Moon thread? 😉

@rusty. Yes you are right Rusty and I apologize. This IS a thread about Keith Moon. I allowed it to get sidetracked on Gary Moore wanting to pivot from hard rock and metal to being a blues player and being able to attract blues greats to play with him in Europe because Gary was popular there.
I watched this last evening about the last 24 hours of Keith Moon who apparently was completely out of control with drugs and alcohol. And becoming wealthy adds to that deadly combination.
This is very informative and sad too.

@robertdee You know I'm just rippin' on ya! 😉 Keith Moon is probably the epitome of the "Crazy Rock God". He wasn't the greatest drummer, but he had the rock and roll lifestyle down to an art! The Who were almost a philosophical opposite to the Beatles in that they weren't the most proficient musicians (except maybe Pete) and that they did not get along together very well (generally speaking). I saw one of the documentaries about them where a producer played through several of their songs and turned down the various instrument levels to indicate that they often weren't in the same time signature. They meshed together and worked almost in spite of themselves. I'll always love "Moonie", though!
