Two words: ROAD TRIP!

I always had big love for Johnny Sandlin.  Got to spend time with him on several occasions.  Loved his book, too!

A major talent. Reached out to his wife several years back, and I sent her the paper cover of the book so JS could sign for me.  Good read. Sitting on my bookshelf right next to Gregg’s book. Good memories.

I read his book too.  Very interesting stuff from a real ABB insider.  I assume most wouldn't know, but Johnny produced Captain Beyond's first record, "Captain Beyond".  For me, that is a very, very huge feather in one's cap for a Producer.  That record is GREAT, has stood the test of time, and the production was WAY ahead of it's time.  And Johnny went way into what a painstaking process it was.

I remember Johnny Sandlin discussing being very upset with Phil Walden for eliminating his producer credit on Eat A Peach.

Not long after the album was released it went to number 4 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and sold over 1 million copies becoming a gold then platinum award album.

I didn't know at the time Tom Dowd had to leave Miami for another project or it could have been when Phil Walden left Atlantic Records and signed Capricorn with Warner Brothers Records for distribution and that precluded Down from staying with the project as he was an Atlantic man and left finishing the album to Johnny and Johnny would then be co-producer. When Eat A Peach dropped I thought Dowd produced the whole thing.

But Phil Walden only wanted Tom Dowd credited as producer and all Johnny got after taking over from Tom Dowd midstream and working so hard on the rest of the album was a "Special thank you".

That didn't sit well with Johnny at all.

Plenty of stories of artists, writers and producers getting the shaft in the record business out there!
