Isbell - Liz Reed @ Ryman

Get it while you can, the Ryman has been scrubbing footage from youtube all throughout the residency, but he had Peter Levin sit in the other night. This was a pleasantly surprising encore.

Smoking version - thanks for sharing.

Who are the lead players?
Enjoyed the first lead a lot.
Thanks for posting.

Yes that was a fine version of Liz Reed. Nice solos from everyone.
I saw the ABB in Nashville on the Brothers and Sisters tour and they were especially hot the entire show. Probably because they knew a lot of real good musicians would be there.
Heard an interview with Charlie Daniels in 1974 for South's Going Do It Again / Fire On The Mountain tour Charlie said his favorite musician for his kind of playing was Duane Allman. But he saw the post Duane lineup in Nashville. (that would be 1973) and though there is a piano player now playing where Duane would have played on many songs, they still blee the roof off the place.
Charlie was right. The Chuck/Lamar lineup was really bringing it in 1973. But the next year, 1974, they were playing to sold out Coliseums and making 100,000 dollars a night, they began to sound jaded and uninspired. Chuck, Lamar and Jaimoe were still putting it in the speakers but the other three were not in to it. Gregg had put out Laidback and did a solo tour and Dickey had a solo album and tour coming and Butch Trucks was irritated by that. Later in 1974 they played a big southern rock festival at the baseball stadium in Atlanta and Lynyrd Skynyrd played just before the Brothers and blew them off the stage.
Gregg could sing without slurring and was forgetting lyrics, Dickey several times only played rhythm when he was suppose to solo. Chuck would jump in and try to cover it. Lamar Williams wasn't on the stage at all. I think Butch sat out a few songs.
They got a bad review in several mags including Rolling Stone and it was said someone dosed the band with some very bad stuff and it made Lamar so sick he was replaced by the Grinderswitch bassist. I seem to remember Dickey playing rhythm with a towel on his face standing back further than the drums.
From that point forward until the plane crash, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the biggest band in the south. Later that summer in Charlotte they played before Z Z Top came out a blew them off the stage too. Skynyrd did a 15 minute high octane pedal to the metal version of Free Bird to a 7 minute standing ovation. 15 minutes later Z Z Top came on and just never brought the crowd up to that level. It seemed they knew that Skynyrd had sucked all the energy so why try.
Also ZZ Top had live Longhorns in corrals left and right of center stage and Billy, Dusty and Frank were dressed like Roy Rogers making a western movie. This was before the beards. They played some real good versions of their songs but it couldn't match the energy of Free Bird. I'm telling ya Lynyrd Skynyrd lit a fire in Charlotte with Free Bird. Three lead guitars playing wide open for 15 minutes.

Who are the lead players?
Jason Isbell center stage, Sadler Vaden stage right. Both are monster players no doubt. Was really cool to catch this one live.

Sadler was great on that. I didn’t want his solo to end.
The 400 Unit also nailed Whipping Post a

Really enjoyed this. Thanks for posting.

Peter is so fucking good, especially on this stuff.

Peter is so **** ing good, especially on this stuff.
100%. He played with the Blind Boys of Alabama, who opened the show and was just grooving away over there and visibly having so much fun. It was great to watch.

100% agree. That was an awesome solo he took.
From the first time I heard this tune back in the early '70's, it's remainded a favorite. Great song & dynamics.
