My Super Deluxe 4 disc edition dropped through the door on Friday. I have only played the original album release a couple of times up to now and comparing it to the first cd edition released from the 90's the quality is astounding. A little bright in a couple of places but overall it is well balanced with no instrument overpowering any other in the mix. It is especially amazing through a decent pair of headphones.
I will pop Ludlow Garage on this afternoon, and concidering the poor quality of the original release I am hoping for a sonic revelation.
Unfortunately I don't own a blu-ray player so I will not be able to comment on this disc until I succumb to parting with the cash to buy one.

Thanks for the info Mike. I have been holding off buying this as I can't decide whether to just get the "deluxe" or go for the "super deluxe". Like you, I don't have a blue ray player, so the fourth disc of the "super deluxe" is of no interest to me, but equally I don't like the 2 disc format of the "deluxe" version. I wish they had just done a 3 disc version without the blue ray disc. As it stands I will probably spring the extra cash for the 4 disc set as I may get a blue ray eventually - although currently I am waiting to see how the UHD / 4K stuff develops.

Have you listened to the "Ludlow" discs yet? I would be interested to hear how much they have been improved.

You that are saying you need a Blu ray player to appreciate the disc, I hope you realize that's not all you need. If you don't have a 5.1 setup, you'll only be able to hear the stereo layer. You need 5.1 speaker placement to hear the magic of the surround layer.
I'm not talking down to anyone here, but a LOT of people don't understand a home theater audio setup. If you do, great !

Hearing ALL the things that have been hidden for 45 years is the best part of this set.

Yeah, I realise that you need the full 5.1 set up as well as a blue ray player ... and as I hardly ever watch DVDs it is unlikely that I will be getting that upgrade in the near future which is why I don't really need the extra disc of the "super deluxe" set ...

The first time I bought Ludlow, I took it back for a refund as not being of merchantable quality.

I won't be sending this back - it's brilliant!

Thanks Gordon ... now I just have to wait and see if certain people have taken the hint regarding potential Christmas presents for me ... 😉

Hi Colin, I will second Gordons opinion of the Ludlow upgrade, it is something else, to my ears anyway when compared to the original. Definitely worth the money for the Super Deluxe Edition.

Listening to the original band still gives a thrill because it feels as if it is all being made up as they go along and has a freshness. Heck, even Gregg cuts loose on the B3 occasionally!

Everything after this was a variation on the original themes and doesn't have that same excitement, imo.

X2 -- all the way -- well said
bought the Ludlow release on cassette (polygram) in early 90s w/all the remaster info etc etc -- played DA Anthology vinyl Dimples a few times one off the other, to see if one sounded clearer/better -- I guess it did but only because I was really listening for it I guess -- awesome that it's been upgraded that much more Grin

Always enjoyed the original on DA Anthology, less the occasional buzzing -- surprising compelled to return the rerelease tho, if it were 5/2/70, the Clemson boot, Love Valley....or others in the muddy HOF 😮 Smile --

but yes the subsequent bands nor anybody ever approached the original's collective feel for jamming -- Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, the Deacon and the Apostle, Red Dog called them (also Butchie in the wonderful Please Call Home DVD)

If my Blu Ray player defaults to "Multi Channel PCM" will I have to manually change it to 5.1? Preemptive question as I eagerly await Christmas Morning.

Audio set up choices are onscreen, and color coded. It won't default.

My order arrives tomorrow, I got the expanded set. Should be in an ABB groove for several hours, and that's a very GOOD thing!

Just had a first listen to the 5.1 and wow great mix.

Very happy with this the CD is better than my original Beginnings release.

Ludlow is an upgrade in sound quality, if you ahve not had it on Boot the addition of Liz Reed is great.

The bonus tracks great though they are (and I would not be without them) show that the made the right choices when picking the version to go on the album.

Very happy with everything but the packing

Thinking of using some Amazon gift cards on this - especially the 5.1 dvd - so is it worth the $53? I have the Fillmore Box on blu-ray and I like it.... Grin

I think you will enjoy it. I don't have a blue ray player yet but I have read reviews on Steve Hoffman's site and people are digging the 5.1 mix. Santa didn't bring me a blue ray player.

I don't know what all the fuss is about with the 5.1 Surround Blu Ray. I think it sounds like a big pile of crap. It's all bass and bongos and you can barely hear the drums and even a bunch of guitar licks are barely audible. All of the bonus tracks sound a LOT better than the original album in the 5.1 settings. When I flipped it to the PCM Stereo, order was restored to the Universe as I could once again hear the drums.

I don't think anything is wrong with my setup because I also got the Van Morrison Moondance Deluxe Edition with the Blu Ray and every song on that surround mix is like a bouquet of flowers blooming in my ear holes with honey dripping out.

Got this for Christmas. Been in an ABB haze for a few days. I LOVE this thing. Especially the blue ray. Sounds like you are sittin in the middle of the studio. get close to my center channel and you can hear (almost feel) Gregg's breath 'pop' on the mic. Duane's slide never sounded so clear. I am not an audiofile like some folks on here...but to a laymen, its like a 3-D recording of one of my favorite records of all time. The Ludlow stuff sounds a lot better, but its still not the best recording. The "dreams" is my favorite version of that song ever. Packaging is cool, but I hate these stupid cardboard slides to scratch your disc up. OVerall...I HIGHLY reccomend this. I still havent got Fillmore east Dlux thing from last year...and if its half as cool as this, I'm ordering it soon!

Nice article. However Joel Dorn produced "Please Call Home" and not Tom Dowd.
