@bill_graham That is such a pretty Les Paul. Would love to own it.

Ed King had a LP with a round light spot on the body below the strings.

Ed said the best theory as to how it got there was it sat in a display window somewhere for sale and the sun shining against the window had a bright spot shinning on the guitar for many weeks.

Bill Wyman is playing bass on the Rolling Stones new studio album. Bill last appeared on 1989's Steel Wheels.

The new album is a tribute to Charlie Watts who died in 2021 at age 80.

Charlie plays on a few tracks and Ringo Starr of the Beatles finished the album for Charlie.

Paul McCartney agreed to appear on the album too.

It was recorded in Los Angeles.

Keith doing a short little warm up on one of his 3,000 guitars.

He was asked recently how many Les Pauls he owns and he said he didn't know. Probably about 500.

Most likely $200-300k or more if I was to guess. Seems to still be the going price for 1958-60 Les Paul bursts

Another beautiful 1959 Les Paul burst surfaces from S. Africa

Amazing these rare guitars keep coming out of the closet after all these years

@bill_graham I just looked under my bed just to make sure. Nope. No cool 59 Les Paul.

The same 64 SG and 63 beat up Strat with a humbucker someone squeezed into the bridge position before 1973 that have been under the bed for 40 years.

Seems by now a Les Paul or something different would be in one of the two cases.

@robertdee  ha! Yeah I actually do have a Les Paul under my bed but it is a 2000 natural finish standard with factory Grover tuners and not a 1959. That's o.k. as I love that guitar.

As cool as it would be to own a real 1959 Burst I would be scared to death to own one and store it under the bed  considering how valuable they are.

@bill_graham Yes it would be a nightmare. The most expensive guitars in the world are the 1959 LP bursts. Of course leaving out other makes and years worth tons of money because of famous musicians owning them.

It would be a nightmare. Will my place catch on fire, get robbed, the plumbing bursts etc.

A 2000 Les Paul with Grovers is still a Les Paul and I would be very happy with it as I'm sure you are Bill.

I remember seeing an interview with the late Gary Moore years ago and they asked about Peter Green's Les Paul and Gary related how surprised he was that Peter thought enough of him to work it out for Gary to have the Les Paul and Peter being nonchalant about whether he continued to have it. Gary said apparently Peter let him have it because the guitar meant more to Gary than it did to Peter himself.

But Gary was a poor man at the time unable to afford a secure flat or a safe place to keep the guitar. Also he had a case that once belonged to Eric Clapton so to make sure nothing happened to the guitar when Gary wasn't at home, Gary took it with him everywhere he went. No matter where, Gary had the Peter Greene Les Paul with him.

That had to have been a burden after awhile. I can't imagine!:)

@robertdee Yeah mine is a real Les Paul Standard which came with Grover tuners from the factory. It is what they called a "Raw Power" Model so it is a plain top natural finish without any heavy finish.

Mine came with 490/495 passive pickups which sound pretty good to my amateur ears. Gibson later changed to EMG active pickups, which required a 9V battery installed in the tone control cavity, before they discontinued this model.

Mine is a bit on the heavy side at 9.4lbs but at my age and ability it is not like I will ever gig with it so the weight is not problem for these old bones.

I am happy with my Les Paul but have to say some of the Murphy Lab lightly aged Custom Shop 1959 Historic Les Paul Bursts sure are pretty and would love to have one but they are big $$$

@bill_graham Wow Bill. Ain't nothing wrong with that Les Paul. It looks real nice. And I'm sure it sounds good.

I've always wanted one. I got my 63 SG and a couple years later a beat up Strat at yard sales. I wasn't in the market for either make. Just the price was not bad and my uncles Rickenbacker was okay but none of my favorite players played one and in the early 70's I had seen Dickey play an SG and a Strat, plus the Doors had an SG and Clapton played an SG in Cream and was playing a Strat currently in 1971 so I got the SG. Then later the Strat.

The SG began as an Les Paul in 1960 but Les Paul himself after playing one for six months didn't like it and wanted his name removed. It's a great guitar and I just read the other day an SG is Gibson's best selling guitar!!

But the SG isn't a Les Paul and doesn't exactly sound like a Les Paul so I understand I guess why the man Les Paul didn't want his name on it.

Gibson has had consistent problems over the years. Even with the Les Paul. Some don't sound as good as others and some don't stay in tune. Dickey had those problems in 1970 to 74 when he got Goldie. So obviously you have one of the good ones.

I just read that long time ES-335 player Larry Carlton has decided to stop playing an ES-335 because of inconsistency problems. Larry didn't elaborate about what those happens to be.

@robertdee I am pretty happy with mine but have not played a lot of other Les Paul's to compare to. Luckily mine stays in tune so maybe the Grovers help?

Gibson has had it's up and downs with quality. For Les Paul's the Norlin era LP's 1970-85 have their detractors but they have become more collectable in recent years so the poor quality complaints for guitars built in that era may have been exaggerated.

Also read that the guitars from 2007-2015 had quality issues as Gibson had challenges sourcing quality wood. Evidently quality improved starting with the 2016 models and are O.K today.

Some good articles with opinions on best/worst. They seem to pretty much align

https://musicstrive.com/best-years-for-gibson-les-paul/

https://guitarquarter.com/guitar/gibson-les-paul-best-years-best-and-worst-times/

Interesting take on the 2007-2012 model years in this article as there were issues I never heard about like the Nashville factory flood

https://musicaroo.com/gibson-les-paul-years-to-avoid/

  • In 2008, the Les Paul Standard received a total “facelift” – chambering, compound radius neck, PLEK system, and locking tuners.
  • In 2009, faced with the public’s rejection of the changes to the Standard model, Gibson decided to “relaunch” the “traditional” Les Paul Standard, but without discontinuing the renewed model. “The Traditional” is born. The Traditional has a 9-hole lightened, mahogany body in one or two parts, mahogany neck, and rosewood fretboard.
  • In 2010, the Nashville factory was completely flooded and all the stock of wood and machinery was lost. Gibson had to resort to alternative woods and the quality went down.
  • In 2011, the US government confiscated all the Rosewood and ebony stock that Gibson had just acquired due to fraudulent importation. So they had to replace the rosewood with alternative woods, and even with Richlite, a synthetic material that replaced ebony on Customs. Gibson was forced to purchase rosewood that is thinner than necessary, and lamination was necessary to achieve the correct thickness.
  • 2012 was a year of transition in which Gibson tried to recover from the tremendous losses by producing mass-selling economic models.

Good article showing the changes through the years

@bill_graham Thanks Bill. I'll read all that.

I'm not sure what year this Les Paul is but I love the finish and the tone in incredible. The Marshalls didn't hurt.

This lady half of this is very righteous Les Paul playing!! I love how every so many measures he strikes his bass string without freting it. It's it completely open.

Don't know what happened to it after he passed in 2011.

Thanks for sharing the video rd. Any video of Moore playing is a good watch.

I believe Gary is playing a special Peter Green replica guitar that Gibson made for him after he sold the Greeny guitar. If you pause the video on a closeup of the guitar it has the reversed Humbucker like the original Greeny and has similar figured top to the later Gary Moore tribute guitar.

Gibson made a Gary Moore model after he passed away with the reversed pickup that looks just like the one in the video.

@bill_graham Yes that looks like it. Apparently Gary got his in 2002. $3,000.00 isn't a bad price for a guitar which sounds like that and looks so cool. I'd rather have a pick guard.

But copies are selling now for $8 to $10 thousand.

And there are some older Les Pauls from Gary Moore at the bottom priced at $80 thousand and more. That is steep! Too much for most people.

I read Keith Richards was asked how many of the 3,000 guitars he owns are Les Pauls and he said he didn't know. Maybe around 500. That is crazy. Someone has a mega fortune to auction off someday.

Gary had a 1961 Strat in Fiesta red he played a lot too. I saw up close pictures of the back of the neck and body and the wood is very worn. He must have played hard.

Not sure if this is Gary's or a replica but notice the wear on the back of the neck. That is jumping on a guitar hard everytime. That's how to do it I guess.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd plays Duane Allman's 1957 GoldTop Les Paul!!

The guitar is usually a museum piece at the Big House and sold for $1.2 million dollars!! With that in mind, some thought Kenny Wayne was being too aggressive with the guitar.

@bill_graham I really enjoyed the old film of the Gibson factory. Still doing it the old school way in 1967.

Gibson instruments are tops with me. Always thought they are the Cadillac of guitars.

This instructor says it's okay to run scales in your solos if you do it at the right places.

@bill_graham Joe now owns over 500 guitars?? I think that is correct. Joe has purchased about 50 additional guitars in the last year or so.

Not sure if he will catch Keith Richards 3,000 guitars which apparently includes about 500 Les Pauls some of which are Epiphone Les Pauls.

I'm impressed with both men.

Unlike Joe, Keith Richards will use a guitar as a club to bash a man in the face!!!
