Another Strat with two Humbuckers rather than three single coils.

What kind of music is this? It's so weird.

The guitar player is fantastic with millions of tones and bends and weird stuff. Like a jazz version of Hendrix.

@rusty

I think all of my instruments were ordered, either online or custom from a shop. I've had pretty good luck, scored some good deals on Reverb (snagged a restored 1930s Regal parlour arch top for about $350), Ebay, and locally via Facebook marketplace (just got a Deluxe Reverb for $700 from a kid who works at Criteria Studios and clearly has no idea the studio's history and pedigree). I've only had to return a couple of instruments because they weren't quite right.

I did go through 2 Les Paul Studios. Accidentally bought the 1970s Tribute which had the fat baseball bat neck and dirty fingers pickups that were pretty metal, hadn't done all my research. I swapped out the pickups, but the neck was just too huge. Things you don't always think about.

Great deal on that Deluxe Reverb as even used vintage Silver Face DR's are going to close to $2K these days. What era DR is it? Vintage Blackface?, Silverface or one of the recent reissues?

I paid about the same as you did for this clean 1975 Deluxe Reverb from eBay back about 10 years ago. It was being sold by the son whose father passed away and had owned it since new. It never left his house which is probably why it was in such good shape. It was really in amazing condition with no rips or tears in the tolex or grille clothe. The son did not play guitar so was selling all his fathers gear.

Only required a little maintenance. All I did was change the power supply electrolytic caps, changed out the grid resistors which can drift with age, remove the death cap, update to a 3 wire power cord, and fill it with vintage NOS tubes. Also replaced the original speaker with a 50W ceramic magnet aftermarket from Weber to save the original speaker. The tremolo and reverb work perfectly and it sounds fantastic.

Silverface reissue, I think it's a 2014. I got a Princeton for $650 on Ebay a few years ago, I thought that was a good deal...

That is a great deal on the DR reissue and the Princeton as the reissues both go for over $1K and the vintage Princeton's over $1.5K for  in decent condition.

@porkchopbob A Rad solid or hollow body? I'm sure Joe Bonamassa has one in his vast collection.

BTW. I read this morning that Bonamassa has left social media. He recently went on stage mad and he couldn't relax and it wasn't fair to the fans in the audience. Certain people are insulting him on his social media platforms. Even ragging on Joe about his looks. Joe owns close to 1,000 guitars and I bet those people crawling on him can't afford more than 3 guitars. So no more Joe on social media according to the report I read.

13 year old Joe Bonamassa!!

12 years old with Danny Gatton!!

@stephen Thanks!! Too bad the meanies chased Bonamassa off social media.

I guess if Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, John Barrymore and Rudolph Valentino were around today their looks and talent would get trashed by some on social media.

These country boys play so many notes apparently because they have three picks going at the same time. Thumb, forefinger and middle finger.

@bill_graham Wow. Elvis only used it off and on for a few months then returned it to Fender. The King said it was too heavy. Weighs 91 pounds. And it's $290 thousand?? I guess so.

It always looked to me that Elvis's guitars were more a prop. He didn't seem to play them much at all.

1958 Goldtop Les Paul which Dickey Betts had changed to a sunburst for up for auction and expecting to fetch $1 million dollars.

Says Dickey played the guitar in the Allman Brothers Band from 1968 to 1978 then gave it to Dan Toler who played it until 1998.

According to earlier interviews with Dickey, he was playing a Gibson ES-335 when the ABB was formed and Duane was playing a Strat. Then Duane got a Les Paul Goldtop and Dickey got a Strat.  In the summer of 1970 Dickey switched to an SG. Then because he liked the tone Duane was getting, decided to get a Les Paul himself and gave his SG to Duane for slide so Duane wouldn't have to retune everytime. But Dickey went through several before he got the guitar up for auction and it's on Fillmore East. Dickey got his first Les Paul in Detroit but didn't like it and went through 4 or 5 before he settled on the auction Les Paul... but by summer of 1971 Dickey had another Goldtop which is on OWO on Eat A Peach. It had a fantastic tone. In 1972 Dickey moved to a Les Paul sunburst with zebra pickups then to Goldie in 1974 which he found at a Pawn Shop in Manhattan in 1974. It was Dickey's number one until he switched to a PRS in 1994. Then a ES-335 dot neck in 95 and 96 and Dickey finished the 90's on a Stratocaster which Dickey had around for sometime for certain rhythm tracks in the studio such as Nobody Left To Run With on Where It All Begins. Dickey went back to a Les Paul about 2001 when Gibson came out with the Dickey Betts signature Les Paul Goldtop. Oh and Goldie got painted red. During the years it sat in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 1995 to 2000, it turned an ugly GREEN so Dickey sanded it down and sprayed it red.

Anyway here is the article on the Les Paul.

Thanks for the link rd and history of Dickey's guitars.

Amazing how much those artist played vintage guitars go for in auction.

Here is more details on the auction. Not surprisingly it has a two piece mismatched plain top which is not centered as they did not use the book matched maple for the Goldtops as the maple was never meant to be seen. I have seen pix of 1950's vintage Goldtops refinished as bursts which were three piece mapletops.

Here is a Jack Pearson show from August 1997 in Syracuse that has surprisingly good audio. Otiel's bass can be heard very well. Just came across this yesterday.

@bill_graham Yes thanks. If the interviews I read and my ABB notes are correct Dickey didn't play that guitar from 1968 to 1978. It was more like 1 year. Probably less than a year. Fall of 1970 until late spring of 1971.

Dickey may have used it occasionally until he gave it to Dan Toler. Often when Charlie Daniels was on the bill Dickey would not use Goldie but a Les Paul cherry or sunburst so he would have red on his guitar because in Charlie's set he would sing "People down in Georgia come from near and far to hear Richard Betts picking on that red guitar".

When Charlie wrote The South Is Going To Do It Again, Dickey was playing a sunburst Les Paul with zebra pickups as his no.1. Interestingly when I saw the ABB on the Win, Loose or Draw tour, Dickey was playing a Goldtop ( it turned out to be Goldie bought in 1974 at a Manhattan pawn shop) and I loved the beauty of his sunburst Les Paul with zebra pickups. At the time it was my favorite guitar among the ones I would see on stage with any band. I finally made my way to the sound board and asked one of the guys why Dickey quit playing the LP with zebra pickups. He said it didn't stay in tune as well as it should.

According to Red Dog, one of Dickey's Les Pauls was going out of tune so often, Dickey threw it across the stage but it didn't break so Red Dog put it back in Dickey's rack but when Dickey saw it there he beat it into the floor so hard the neck snapped. Red Dog said he gathered up the pieces and put it in a dumpster. I don't know what that one looked like.

When Dickey got Goldie in 1974, he settled down and it was his no. 1 for 20 years.

It apparently is correct Dickey did give this auction guitar to Dan Toler when the ABB got back together in 1978. In Great Southern Danny often played an old Stratocaster that was Dickey's. Danny apparently did use the auction Les Paul the entire time he was in the Gregg Allman Band (1982-1989).

It seems the big claim to fame for this auction guitar is it's on At Fillmore East. Every track.

I was disappointed when I read Danny Toler sold this guitar. Not sure what he got for it. He probably needed the money. But sell a gift from Dickey? Danny had been playing a red Stratocaster with a whammy bar he used a lot by the time he sold the Les Paul. Before that I never saw Danny using a whammy bar. But he was good at it.

Here is Danny playing this auction Les Paul it seems to me in the early 80's

There was (is) a guy who use to post quite often (looong time ago) who swears that HE obtained ... what was left of the Les Paul that Dickey trashed.  He certainly owned a LP that bore the destruction that you describe.  This guitar was a work in progress for many years.  I haven't seen or talked to the guy in quite a while.  At one point, he was making arrangements with Gibson to have some work done to it to bring it as close back to whatever glory that it originally had.  I will not name the guy (some of y'all are bound to have heard the story yourselves?), but he had a pretty good story of how he came to own it.  According to this person, the guitar in question can be seen on the cover of the Beginnings LP.    Weird, crazy disconnected story ... in this respect, not unlike a lot of Allman Brothers lore!  😉

@bill_graham Short version - not much more than I already told.  This is all second/third hand.

The guy (former HTW poster and great guitar player) was at the show where Dickey allegedly channeled Pete Townsend.  He or a person with him retrieved the guitar once it had been formally and officially tossed.  He said that it was actually HE who tried to give it back to Dickey - and that's when Dickey gave it it's final flight.  I saw a Gibson Les Paul in various stages of fracture and re-hab.  One of the last times that I spoke with the guy, he told me that he was sending it to Gibson for additional restoration.  He even told me that he'd met Dickey and told him the story.  He said that he offered it back to Dickey, who said that he might use it for a tour guitar someday.

I never knew any questions to ask or about the possible history of the guitar.  Could be bovine excrement - could be a thang.  I don't know.

Sounds like Dickey trashed it pretty good. Would love to see pix of the before and after the restoration of that guitar!
