Music has always been a passion of mine since I got my first cheap transistor radio in the early 60's and started listening to top 40's on NYC AM stations.

While I do own several guitars and amps I never really mastered the instrument but I still have a a fascination with all things guitar related and take mine out from time to time and hack away when the family is out of the house.

I love watching interesting musical instrument related YouTube videos and reading magazines related to guitars and amps so thought I would start a thread to post anything  anyone finds in case others might find it interesting.

Being a Les Paul owner I was checking out the Les Paul forum and found some videos I thought others might find interesting.

The first is a video of Joe Bonamassa sharing some of his guitar and amp collection. He is not only a brilliant guitarist, IMHO, but also is an avid collector who has some amazing equipment he shows in this video. Please feel free to post any videos, articles and pics of cool guitar stuff here and I will share anytime I find something I think someone may enjoy.

My wife found my stash of Musicians Friend and Sweetwater catalogs under my mattress ...

I am constantly cruising Craigs List and Reverb searching for new hotties - even though I already have guitars that I rarely play.  I recently wrote a song called "Too Old For Another Guitar?" - I might try to post a sound clip later (file might be too large?).  If it's a sickness or perversion ... I don't want no therapy!

Always love the guitar...never owned or played one.  My dad played a ES 335 as far as I can tell from a few pictures.  Later in life I was bummed he never taught me to play. Great thread.

I am a big Gibson fan and started watching this Gibson factory tour video which is very long but I found it fascinating.

Amazing how much talent there is required to make these guitars and the craftsman who have been doing it for decades.

While the process is more automated than in the past there is still a lot of hands on craftsmanship required to make these guitars.

Here is an older Haynes Gear video from 2007 with his old guitar tech Brian Farmer (RIP) which shows how his rig has changed in the previous video.

@bill_graham That was interesting. I'm a big Warren fan. Was playing his first solo album in the car today. I think it is from 1993 or so.

First time I saw Warren it was 1988 with the Dickey Betts Band at a good size club and they were promoting Pattern Disruptive.

Warren had two guitars that night on stage with him. Both were Paul Reed Smith guitars and one was silver.

Next saw him with the Allman Brothers and he had four. The same two Paul Reed Smith guitars, a red Stratocaster he used on several songs and a tobacco burst Led Paul probably used on a few more songs than the Strat. Silver PRS was on side on One Way Out. Didn't use it as much as the year before.

Only Keith Richards ( 4 to 5 thousand) owns more guitars than Joe Bonamassa. What is just as incredible Joe must have over a million dollars worth on amps. Supposedly has the largest collection of Fender and Marshall amps doesn't he. And hundreds of not over a thousand guitars.

I've met this cat. Guitar Porn huh? This apparently was composed for a Porn film. It's actually some decent bluesy playing.

@robertdee Yeah Joe's collection is mind boggling in its size and breadth.

He has mint examples of every 1950's early 60's Fender tweed, and 1960's brown and blackface amp model. Considering how delicate the tweed covering is that is just hard to wrap my head around. I think you are right his amp collection alone has to be worth millions.

Of course since a 1958/59 and 60 Gibson Les Paul can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars each his Gibson guitar collection is worth many millions of dollars I reckon.

@bill_graham  This is cool!

Joe meets Clapton and Clapton knew who he was. Asked Joe why an amp was set-up a certain way. Joe couldn't believe it!! Joe then knew Clapton had seen him.

@porkchopbob  Did Derek say Elmore James??

And Jesse Ed Davis?

He didn't mention Jack and usually doesn't. But Jack is a slide guitar force to be reckoned with. Here he is knocking it out of the park on slide with the Nationals on a demo they recorded in 1990 !!

@rusty Joe sitting way up in the Penthouse huh?:)

I saw Joe just a couple three ago at the Coliseum here. Joe knocked it out of the park. Great guitar playing. Hot tight band.

And he has the guitars in tow. A good number of beautiful Les Pauls. An old Goldtop with what looked like P-90s. Played an old Fender Nocaster on one song and two or three different Strats on a couple of songs. Plus had an acoustic guitar song.

I really enjoyed it.

Joe has one Goldtop Les Paul he mentioned before he played it he calls Gary Moore. Gary had a huge influence on Joe Bonamassa early on. Gary's old Goldtop came Gary's way from Peter Green. It was Peter Greene's main guitar but he could tell Gary really wanted it so he just let Gary have it  Very strange to me  The two pickups apparently mistakenly got wired out of phase. Kert Hammitt of Metallica owns it now and paid a big price for it.

@robertdee Some of these guys seem to be having guitar fashion shows!  The first player I ever saw who used more than a couple of guitars (12 or so, I believe) was Steve Howe (Yes).  Howe typically (haven't seen them in 10 years) would alternate between a modified Telecaster, a Strat, a Les Paul, a pedal steel, a Martin acoustic  and his stalwart Gibson ES-175 in a show.  By comparison - I read an old interview with Jim McCarty (Cactus) who said that in the day (70s, I suppose) "you had ONE guitar - period.  "When it wore out - then you'd get another one."  I think a lot of these guys are just showing off their collections.  😉

@bill_graham Yes that is it. Peter Greene's Les Paul. Gary Moore got into financial trouble and sold it to a collector who sold it the Kirk in Metallica. I want to say over a million dollars!! I think that is right.

This is a different Gold Top I think. Gary Moore with a Gibson Les Paul and a stack of 100 Watt Marshall and TURNED UP LETTING THAT PAUL SCREAM!!!!!!

@bill_graham I got close to Dickey's 1956 Stratocaster in Blacksburg, VA. at VPI University when Allman Betts Band played there just a few years ago. It's a 1956 Hardtail and it's a kinda tobacco burst. But man when you are close to it you can't help but notice major road ware on the body where your right arm would rest at the top and the neck is incredibly road worn.

Duane is a little off on some details. Dickey called it a 1956 in a few interviews and it's never had a whammy on it and Dickey said it's a real fine guitar. Stays in tune and has a great neck. So I guess all the many worn places on the neck between the frets matter not. Also the first several times I saw the band in 1970, Dickey was playing a Stratocaster. Duane tells Norm his dad had never played a Strat until 1997. Maybe Duane is saying Dickey main guitar? I found a picture of Dickey with the 1956 Strat from 1977. Porkchopbob found some I guess in the 70's or 80's with Dickey with Muddy and he has the Strat.

Old Strats typically had single coils. Now you can get a Strat with all kinds of pickups. Jimmy Herring had one with factory installed Humbuckers. Just two pickups instead of the usual three.

But with a stack of 100 Watt Marshalls you can make single coils scream like Hendrix did!!!

@bill_graham You know I wonder if Duane's Gold Top has the pickups that it had when Duane played it. You know don't you Duane Allman talked another guitar player out of his 1959 Cherry Sunburst but Duane had the pickups from the Goldtop switched into the Sunburst.

Dickey Betts said when the Allman Brothers Band formed Duane was playing a Stratocaster and Dickey was playing a Gibson ES-335. I think Joe Dan said it was actually an ES-345. But the first time I saw them in early 1970, the first several times in spring of 1970 Duane was playing the Goldtop Derek is playing in 2014 and Dickey was playing a Stratocaster. Then by summer Dickey moved to an SG and shortly to a Les Paul and he went through several before his long stretch with his 1957 Goldie Goldtop which is red now. The SG Dickey played in summer of 1970 is the guitar Dickey gave Duane to keep tuned for slide guitar. That must be it Jack Pearson is playing . And I think the main guitar Derek plays now is a custom shop replica of the Dickey/Duane SG Duane's daughter gave Derek Trucks.

The last few times I saw Duane he had changed guitars again. No longer the cherry sunburst but a tobacco burst Led Paul and I think DUANE was on the back of the body made with old frets. Not completely sure.

@bill_graham I saw Led Zeppelin in 1974 and Jimmy played a bright cherry sunburst Les Paul is what I remember. And played it with a violin bow on one song. He also brought out the SG double neck. I immediately recognized it as an SG but had never seen a DOUBLE neck version before  And later in the 1970's I saw a show where Jimmy played the Telecaster with the maple neck ( maple neck on a Trle is rare isn't it?) on a couple of things. They were seriously loud and John Bonham's drums shook the coliseum. My ears rang for five days  That is not good for the ears  Someone at the show told me Plant was a big Elvis fan and suddenly I could detect that influence.
