Was it January 1975 or very late 1974 Gregg did a man a favor and replaced an act that couldn't do the gig and that was also in LA and that is when he met Cher?

And Gregg did two solo tours in 1974 and released The Gregg Allman Tour live album and with Cher in the picture, he cycled away from the Allman Brothers Band again. Gregg refused to have much to do with Phil Walden's desire to get a follow up to Brothers and Sisters out the door. After months of sporadic recording on Win, Loose or Draw, Johnny Sandlin had to get the tapes in a suitcase and fly to LA and rent studio time to get the album finished and get Gregg Allman on the recording.

In Rolling Stone I think it was, during an article about the Allman Brothers Band's struggles to get rolling again in the wake of the enormous success the band enjoyed in 1973, Butch Trucks was quoted saying " You can't count on Gregg Allman for anything!"

Gregg was the opening act for Etta James at the January 1975 shows. The venue was The Troubadour in Hollywood, Ca. Dates are January 22 and 23, two sets each night. I recorded both nights. Gregg came out and played a few acoustic songs and was joined by Etta James band for several songs. They all sounded pretty tight. I don't remember hearing that he replaced another act. Cher was with David Geffin and was introduced by Etta James. We saw both Gregg and Cher talking behind the venue as we where leaving. That was their first meeting. Glad I was there. My only regret is that I didn't record Etta James.

@salcapitano I recall that now. Record executive David Geffen was with Cher.

I recall Gregg telling the story. Gregg said he was told that was a big shot record executive with Cher but he didn't care. I think Gregg claimed he had someone deliver her a note he wrote.

Gregg almost quit the Allman Brothers over Cher. He said being in that band was a real downer and he liked his solo band and being involved with Win, Loose and Draw was the most negative recording sessions he had ever had outside of recording for Liberty records in early 1969.

But Gregg has two original songs on the album. Apparently almost all of Gregg's parts were added in Los Angeles after the rest of the band had recorded their parts which was not how they use to do it.

Can't Loose What You Never Had, a Muddy Waters song, and Dickey's High Falls are as good as anything on Brothers and Sisters.

I remember Johnny Sandlin said Dickey showed up at the studio one night ready to record two songs he said they didn't need Gregg on. But he couldn't find Butch and Jaimoe. Chuck and Lamar were there. So Johnny and Bill Stewart played drums on Louisiana Lou and Sweet Mama.

I can hear an organ on Louisiana Lou but that is probably Chuck.

Some use to claim this is the only thing Gregg recorded with the rest of the band in Macon. The rest was added later in LA.

Well that's great for Gregg. All I can say is I saw and heard the show and saw the both of them in back of the club.
