ERIC CLAPTON ANNOUNCES NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

thats it?

@matt05 Yes unless more dates are added, it's just those five shows.
This is what it will look like if you go to one of those shows. Same Clapton show for years.
Derek Trucks was in Clapton's band but like Duane Allman, he couldn't keep up with Eric and his band.

@matt05 I wasn't thinking about April fool's day. I'm not sure why Bibby Whitlock got the impression Duane Allman couldn't keep up with Clapton and the rest of the band live as I've always read compliments about Duane from Clapton and same for Derek. Clapton likes Derek as a player according to his interviews where it came up.

how many times did whitlock see derek play with clapton? his opinion on duane has nothing to do with derek and most fans of clapton know why derek doesn't play with clapton anymore and its the opposite of couldn't keep up

Besides the fact that the Layla Key to the Highway is virtually a live record, we also have the live bootleg from Tampa to judge for ourselves and Uncle Duane fits in very well and shines his special light on the entire proceedings, thank you very much, Bobby Whitlock. We can use our own very grateful ears here. Maybe Duane said something dumb that grated on Bobby. Two very opinionated guys. Bobby was totally against the coda on Layla and still not embarrassed to still say so, and Duane had already reached the conclusion by then, I think, that he was the greatest player in the world, and fifty years later, he's still right.

The photo could be the most precious in all of rock n roll - these two greats framing it like the giants they are - then going left to right below, the neck>headstock of EC’s guitar, Carl Radle, and the hands of Duane Allman
Brilliant, beautifully composed photo of a rare onstage moment - only one (I’ve ever seen) of the 2 sit ins he did w/them 🎸🎸
great to see EC doing a few dates, also good to see the love for him here, he’s survived a long road, Slowhand is a prince

@matt05 As far as I know Bobby Whitlock never saw Derek in Clapton's band. Whitlock hasn't been in a Clapton band in years has he? I haven't noticed Whitlock.
I was joking about Derek not being able to keep up. Said it because of what Whitlock said about Duane.
Clapton has been very complimentary toward Derek in the few interviews I saw when Derek came up.
Maybe Derek would have a time keeping up with Steve Vai or Joe Satriani or Richie Blackmore if keeping up is the right word for having to play a hot solo after one of those hot rod players soloed but not Clapton.

that was my point about whitlock is i don't think he ever saw derek play, at least with clapton. the last almost 25 years clapton isn't a big fan of someone pushing him playing wise. usually someone that does that gets a quick exit from the band so clapton can go back to chill mode

@matt05 Oh I didn't know Clapton decided not to have Derek in his band at some point. I thought Derek was too busy with TTB etc.
I thought Derek was great in Clapton's band. I saw two of those shows.
Here they are in 2018. Also I think Clapton gave Susan the Les Paul she is playing in the clip. I think it's a custom shop recreation of the Les Paul Clapton played back when Clapton played a Les Paul. Apparently they all like each other. But maybe Clapton doesn't want Derek Trucks in his band anymore. I've never heard that though.

thats just a rumor that goes around when someone exists claptons band. not sure if its true but it usually does seem to be the better players that leave

Nah. Derek isn't a shredder for sure, but he's got the musicianship "chops" to play with anyone. He routinely "keeps up" when playing with Jimmy Herring no problem at all and Jimmy Herring has chops to be in the same category as those players.
Derek did the Clapton tour as a one-off. He never intended to join the band on a permanent basis. I think that was the line publicly even when that tour was going on. Enjoy the ride, gets to play with a legend, very nice paycheck (didn't it pay for his home studio?), and great exposure beyond what the ABB could ever give him. Derek wants/wanted his own band though, and be the bandleader. And so he is.

Also, if you watch those interviews with Whitlock that he did with his wife/partner, I think were posted on YT. There was some great info in there so it was good to watch, but it was also very clear that Whitlock is Chief Resident Complainer and had/has his own agenda and perspective. And I didn't get the sense that his memory of the time is 100% clear either.

@zambi Here is another guitarist the young players who hang out at the big music store in my area claim is more advanced on the instrument than anybody who has been in the Allman Brothers including Duane Allman and Derek Trucks. A better technician than Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan too. I've heard the name but never heard a song by him.

@matt05 Haven't heard of that band. I'm really out of the loop at the music store. I'm 76 and these guitar player hopefuls in their late teens and 20's there I guess have some respect for my favorite players but this group just isn't that impressed with Eric Clapton, Dickey Betts, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, B. B. King, SVR, Albert King etc.
If you're not ripping notes like Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani etc you are NOT a top shelf player.
They respect Derek and Duane's slide playing but these young cats aren't into slide guitar that much.
They definitely aren't big on Keith Richards and are " so what he's in a famous band that's been around for 100 years. Thats only the reason why he is rich " when I show them that Keith Richards also Eric Clapton and players such as David Gilmore are worth more money from playing guitars and writing music than their heros combined.
They smile and shake their heads when I show them that old cracked stone faced Keith Richards is worth $500 million dollars.
I'm not able to listen to the so called shredders everyday including Van Halen. But I can listen to Blue Sky and Jessica and the latest TTB albums and B. B. King everyday. Must be my age and what grabbed me when I was 22 years old.

@robertdee hats funny is the only solo by timmons i can recall off hand is the solo in the song "i still think about you" which is a ballad with slow solo. i can hum almost every dickey/duane solo. that says it all

This wonderful picture reminds me of a saying from the swing era, I think pertaining to Coleman Hawkins, " The best players are the best listeners." You listen, listen, listen, and all of a sudden you're doing something all your own.

He’s coming to Pittsburgh and my wife was like “wanna go!!!l”. I spent my formative music years obsessed with Eric. He’s how I learned of Duane and ABB. Still love him in all his eras. But I just can’t do it. I just can’t bring myself to see my guitar hero not playing like a champ. It’d just bum me out. I know he can sing real well still, but every solo that he doesn’t take or does take and doesn’t kill will just crush me. I’d rather cherish those times I saw him in top form and let those be my lasting memories.

Not sure I would go see him either. I saw him twice over the last 15 plus years , he just seemed to be mailing it in. Not much enthusiasm. Maybe if he did the Winwood thing again of another one rf his peers with him. But I will pass.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I'd rather read a book... 😝

Same here, great artist, a couple of his shows i will never forget Springfield MA April 78, played with Jack Bruce and friends.
I've seen him half dozen times and last show was it about 15 years ago in Boston. I would love to spend a day fishing with
him talking music or and fishing. That would be fun.
