Dickey Betts: The 1981 "Duane Allman" Interview: Jas Obrecht
I think I've heard this before. Not entirely sure.
I think it's funny how us hard core fans know more about the Allman Brothers Band albums than Gregg and Dickey. Both made surprising mistakes.
Dickey plays the long second solo on the live At Fillmore East version of Whipping Post. Duane plays the first solo.
Also if Idlewild South is like the live versions I saw of Midnight Rider, there isn't a pedal steel guitar on the track. And it's not Dickey. Dickey didn't start playing the little solo on Midnight Rider until after Duane died. I think it's Duane playing and his is just coping some country licks.
Take a listen. Back then Dickey only played those fills around Duane after Duane's little solo live. Dickey probably thought there was a pedal steel guitar on Midnight Rider because he thought the man knew what he was saying. I guess it sounds like it.
Here's the interview with Gregg for the guitar player mag
Thanks for posting --- I would say the few mistakes Dickey made were completely understandable, not surprising --- the guy was helping create in the moment what we all later devour gluttonously 😆
"what fingers did Duane use to bend the strings?"
Seriously?
@islalala I agree. It's difficult to remember all the order of solos and ins and outs of those albums and they didn't look at each other's hands but listened to each other.
In another interview Gregg said Duane could set fire to a stage in a New York minute. That Duane was the energy we fed on and what kept us going because even Gregg doubted the Allman Brothers Band was going to ever break out especially after the first two albums sold less than 60,000 copies.
But Duane said not to worry. All we need to do is do a live album and capture some of that fire we have live and we will break out.
And in July of 1971 Duane said at a live show " I wanna thank each and every one of you for what you did for us. Our live album has sold 110,000 copies in just four days man. Thank you. That makes us feel it's been worth while to put this much effort into something".
With Gregg's vocals, Berry's swing bass style and Duane 's incredible fire and energy he let loose on the stage, how could this band not break out?
Listen to Duane blast his solo like a rocket at Kennedy Space Center!!!!!

Yeah, you know what musicians who are playing every other night don't typically do? Sit around and listen to their own albums. When you're constantly creating, you'll forget more of the shows or sessions than you remember.
