This is QUITE a bio and I'm sure any guitar player here would be interested in reading it if you were not aware of all this. I know Dick Dale is a legend but I had no idea that he was such an innovator as far as sound and amplification............definitely right at the cutting edge. This show is not until December 19th but I already got a ticket last night. I've never seen him. Moe's Alley can only hold maybe 500 or 600 if completely maxed out and I'm nearly certain this will sell out. I looked on Wikipedia.org: Dick Dale is 77 years old. According to Wikipedia he had a recurrence of rectal cancer in 2008 but went through chemo and radiation and beat it.

I'm interested in feedback (no pun intended) from anyone who's seen him.

Definitely loud but in a good way! I've seen him 7 times over the past 20+ years and he's put on a solid, high-octane, thoroughly entertaining show every time. I missed seeing him this year but I saw him last year and he was fantastic as usual. If you have anything you would like autographed, bring it with you. Every time I've seen him he always stays after the show to meet the fans, pose for pictures and sign autographs for anyone who wants one. A great guy and a class act!

Here's a great quality B&W video from a show I saw in 2011 at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA (Dick's son Jimmy was on the drums.) The cameraman drove up from NYC just for the show and was standing next to me on my right. Great stuff!

Hey Rob...

How are ya ?

I have seen Dick Dale 4 times and each time was a full frontal sonic assault, but in the best possible way ! He is just incredible.

If you don't mind, I am going to recycle a couple previous posts that I've written about Mr. Dale that accurately state how I feel about the man...

I was fortunate enough to be able to see and hear "The King Of The Surf Guitar", Mr. Dick Dale last night. He plays here about once a year, but I had not gone to see him since around 1995.

Man! He came close to blowing the ceiling off the concert hall! Age has not slowed this guy down at all. He played so many warp speed fast runs and screaming treble laden leads that it became almost too much of a good thing. Almost...

And even with earplugs, he was freaking LOUD!!!! His bass player and drummer were incredible as well. Just an awesome, intuitive, well honed rhythm section.

If you are a fan of the electric guitar and you have not seen this guy...do so before he decides to retire. The man must be in his late 60's by now, but you'd never know it while he was onstage.

The coolest thing. After the show, as promised, he came back out and sat on the front of the stage and shook hands or signed autographs until everyone was able to get up to see him, even though there had to be well over 150 people waiting for him

At one point, as I was waiting for a handshake, I heard Dick say to the fan he was talking to "I gotta tell ya. I do love my job." The guy still loves what he does. And he appreciates his fans.

The guy is just awesome.......

This next post is from another music site where we were discussing musicians who may be a bit too cocky and arrogant for their own good. The thread actually reminded me of Dick Dale...but in a very good way...

*****************************************************************

(post) This thread reminded me of the first time that I saw Dick Dale.

It was in a small rock club in Columbus , Ohio, back in 1995, just after Tribal Thunder was released.

It was my first time seeing him, and he came off as being more than a bit cocky at times while he was onstage. So much so that I remember one guy standing in front of me say to his friend..." Yeah. He's great. Just ask him"...

But, after an incredible show (he WAS great) , I stuck around with a few other folks and to my amazement , he came back out and sat down on the edge of the stage and proceeded to sign autographs and shake hands. When it was my turn I shook his hand and all I could think of saying off the cuff was "Mr. Dale....If you promise to come back, I promise to be here".

He stopped for a second, looked me straight in the eye and gave me a warm smile, shook my hand a 2nd time and said " Thank you man. I really appreciate that."

I walked away from that encounter feeling really good ...:)

So, as I found after seeing him three more times, the cockiness is just part of his stage persona, and off stage, he is a really nice guy who truly treasures his fans. And he always comes back out after the show to shake hands or sign autographs. The last time I saw him a few years back, there were easily over 150 folks who waited for him after the show and he did not leave until each person got that handshake or autograph.

When you are fortunate enough to meet an incredibly talented musician like that who is also obviously a genuinely nice person, well...that makes it a bit harder to put up with the kind of arrogance that we're talking about here.

**************************************************************************

I love this guy. And I know you will have a great time Rob.

All I ask is that you post a review...

Thanks !
